And now ,I 'd like to say a word about food. What the heck was that dish that SS mom & Yi-young were eating out of the metal bowl ? It looks like they take whatever is in the fridge ,mix it with rice - then eat it . SS had some when she blew off her diet . ( The bowl reminds me of my dog's dish ) Don't get me wrong _ I would try it -- and I probably would like it .
What I won't eat ,though ,is octopus ( live or otherwise ) I had it once in Greece .No Thank you !!
It was a really gross version of bibimbap. Way too much hot pepper paste and no fried egg on top. Those metal bowls are used by Koreans for just about everything. Bibimbap is really tasty if you haven't tried it yet.

SR -- can't believe you haven't tried any K food yet! If you like beef you'll love bulgogi. Just make sure you don't get it from a buffet. The best place is one where you grill the meat yourself at the table.

Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

I too caught up with episodes 11 and 12 tonight. Good episodes!

Can someone explain their viewpoint about SS getting mad at him when he tore up the check. Then he told her he would give up 50K and his restaurant for her. She got furious at him telling him he doesn't know how the world works. Best I can tell is she's upset that he doesn't value the money, considering how much of a big deal it is for someone of her financial stature. Since he tore up the check doesn't it mean SS's family didn't lose the money anyway? And even if they did, they just paid it back to him. Why is she interjecting her relationship with that business deal. I'd be interested to hear what the female perspective (your thoughts) on this is. From my point of view, it's a little over the top melodramaticism.

I particularly liked the scene where Heon convinced SS's sister to tell him where she was. She was moved by his text msgs.

Then at the top of the mountain. One of the best moments yet!

It looked like KSS' mom & sis were eating bibimbap out of that bowl. I always think it's the K-version of fried rice (except the rice is not fried) in that they pretty much throw whatever they have in the fridge and mix it together with rice, sesame oil & some hot sauce. It is offered in most K-restaurants and I quite like it especially the dolsot bibimbap, which is served in a hot stoneware, and the rice at the bottom gets crispy.

SR, one of the times I was eating at a K-restaurant, the table next to me had live shrimp served to them, and I saw some of the shrimp jumping off the plate!

Old Boy has a very intriguing plot. I needed to find out the reason for the events in the movie and view 'til the end even though I thought I'd seen enough disgusting scenes in between. I found the story sick and disturbing. So its original is Japanese. The movie, though very well-made, is just much too dark and bizarre for me to take. You can rent it with Eng subs from Blockbuster.

I do as I please.

Re: Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

Ep 12- Wow SS sure had a lot of ups and downs today. JH likes her now but there is still HJ to think about , HJ tries to make he stay away from JH (a pretty dirty trick to bring up her illness, "Oh I wish I was chubby like you" Oh yeah I am sure you do) and then Yi- Young tells her not to believe JH! Whew! I though SS's daydream with Henry was pretty funny. It is funny to hear her talk that way I am sure she can speak pretty good English KSA went to Ball State University in Indiana and majored in Piano (so she also doesn't need the lessons!)

There were some great lines in tonight's show. When Chef Lee and JH were talking and the Chef said that a woman should fit in your arms and JH tells him " Sam Soon fits right into my arms" was one. The other was after JH tears up the check and they argue and SS tells him"I don't want to introduce a punk like you to my dad" , good way to make him stop and think as we later see him digging for the check in the trash.

So YY gives in later and tells JH where SS has gone after he promises to not make SS cry anymore. The messages must have changed her mind from eariler when she told him "You suck, you suck to the tune $50,000". LOL! SS's whole speech up Mt. Halla made me laugh so much I was almost crying. What a surprise at the top for SS. Well we will see how that all turns out later today , so get your Choco-Pies ready!!! I will be stopping for some on the way home!

SR, i also do not really understand why she mad at him for tearing up the check. I think it may be because how hard for them to get the money back and tearing the check may be kinda of unappreciating their efforts? I mean JH is born with money so to him 50K is nothing so he tore it up to show he cares more abt her than the money. But in SS's eyes its kinda of maybe disrecpecting? I think i confused myself -_-"

But the mountain scene was really one of the highlight of the drama. It is a new romanticism! It was so funny when she thought he came up to push her over the hill. emoticon

I loved when she was struggling up the mountain and cursing him all the way - "what is he, a mountain god?" In my mind, that line is really "what is he, a mountain goat?" It's more of his rich boy blah-blah as opposed to the real world difficulty of the actual climb - or the difference between his charmed life in which the sun shines, clouds encircle the mountaintop and his brother clears the path first, but when she climbs Mt. Halla it's alone and in the pouring rain and howling winds.

I think that's also why she gets so upset about the check. As she says, he is someone who doesn't understand how the world works. He thinks this is a grand romantic gesture that shows how much she means to him. (Altho I do think he always planned to tape the pcs back together!) She feels it negates what her family had to go through to pay it back and shows his lack of respect for hard work, struggle, practicality, his general lack of a grasp of the principles by which most people live. That's why he's not someone she could introduce to her father after all, and that's the biggest possible heartbreak to her. That's so, so big in her mind that she realizes she has to wash her hands of him, finally. It's over.

I was touched by Sam Sik calling Yi Young "Sis" in two scenes and saying things like only KSS scares me, I've got enough on my plate with KSS, don't be so mean to me I may be your brother-in-law. And that was great when he put Chef Lee in his place with that glare: Sam Soon fits in my arms just fine, buster!

Hee Jin's losing her grip, playing the cancer card with KSS, who doesn't let her get away with it. Then she tries dragging Sam Sik around their old haunts to stir up sentimental memories and finally in her frustration makes a telling slip: "Henry would care! Henry cherishes memories!" Sam Sik's eyes sure widened at that.

Yahhhh, addie! I apologize again for teasing earlier, I was wrong and thought SS on the mountaintop didn't happen until Ep. 13 so I was even more out of line. Thanks for not telling me off like I deserve!

I'm soooo sad we're nearing the end.

sweepywabit, bbstl - yeah I figured along those same lines. Ok good, I'm on the same wavelength to a degree on that one then. I was mostly interested if females had a different perception of that event than I did. ;)

Yes that's one thing about this show. I think there was and is room for more detail and storytelling in the characters. The show definitly focuses on SS and Heon and that's cool. But, I wish they made it into say 20 episodes and could have used that to exploit more detail into the other characters and develop the relationship of heon and SS further. Only 4 episodes to go, I don't want it to end!

Also Winter Sonata premieres tonight here for us US viewers. Are you guys tuning in tonight?

Re: Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

Thanks addie. I was very confused, myself! We'll miss you tonight.

This is my favorite episode. I think. KSS is so determined to not let Sam Sik back in her good graces even tho he's shown up on the mountaintop on her birthday. He's even brought Choco Pies and, most touching of all, the traditional Korean birthday dish of Seaweed Soup. I found this note on a website called buhay sa korea about a woman preparing this dish for her husband:

as is customary here in korea, i served him “miyeok guk” or seaweed soup in the morning… this is a reminder for his mother’s hard work and labor…

Here's a second article I thought was very funny!

New U.S. Mothers Swear by Korean Seaweed Soup

Korean seaweed soup or miyeok-guk is gaining popularity as a post-childbirth food in the U.S.
It is reportedly the most popular dish among new mothers at Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles, where half of the 80-90 new mothers recovering there order the restorative soup. More and more general patients are ordering the soup as well, the hospital said. The phenomenon started after Korea's CHA Medical Group took over the medical center from Tenet Healthcare Corp. in February.

"Seeing Korean mothers eating seaweed soup after childbirth, white, black, Latino and Armenian mothers as well as general patients are now asking for the dish,” CHA Medical Group executive director Kim Chun-bok said. “We serve about 100 bowls of seaweed soup a day, and about half of those go to non-Korean patients." Kim said other hospitals in the LA area frequented by Koreans such as Good Samaritan Hospital are following suit.

Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center's chief nutritionist said, "Since seaweed soup is rich in calcium and iodine, it's effective in contracting the uterus and stopping bleeding, so it helps in recovery after childbirth. As word gets round that the soup cleans the blood and promotes circulation, American patients who've never eaten seaweed soup are starting to choose it as a health food."

The CHA Medical Group plans to airlift a fresh shipment of Korean soy sauce for use in its seaweed soup to the U.S. When it acquired the hospital in February, the group sent over 100 liters of soy sauce bottled at a farm in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province, but the unexpected seaweed soup craze decimated supplies some six months ahead of schedule. "To provide Korean Americans with a taste of the old country, we plan to fly over soy sauce bottled right here in Korea, even if it is somewhat troublesome,” the group’s director said.

(englishnews@chosun.com )

Even after all that and a massage, Sam Sik still ends up on the floor and with a nosebleed! He still doesn't get how much she wants to change her name, but he's chipping away at her bit by bit with comments like "I had to climb the mountain for the one and only Kim Sam Soon. I wouldn't bother for Kim Hee Jin."

He goes to check out Henry in the "guy" way, by challenging him to sports and then getting into a fight. Smooth! Satisfied that Henry loves Hee Jin and will continue to take good care of her, SS finally takes the final step toward the future with KSS and goes to break up with Hee Jin. I've never understood his comment "people go on living even though they know they'll die", will you guys please share your thoughts?

Ok ,now I think that I confessed to getting ahead of myself last weekend .I have watched ep 13 ,but I wanted to watch it again before posting . ( BTW,the rest of the shows will be new to me ) when JH is breaking up with HJ,she is very emotional and says that no matter how he feels about SS now ,someday that love would fade, and he may feel about SS the way he now felt about HJ.Knowing that <did he still want to go to SS?

That is when he said "people go on living even though they know they are going to die."(take a risk ! Live !)
I thought it was quite a profound statement ,really. That is my take on it ,anyway >
