K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
This is my first post. I think I’m gonna be hooked onto this board for some time.
I have watched every episode of this drama except for the one broadcast yesterday, Jan 2. The one from Friday of last week ended with Jongnam crying as Minwoo's mother said "mommy's right here."
Will someone please fill me in what happened yesterday?
Today's episode started with Haein being warmly welcomed by Kiwoong's Mother and Grandmother.
Then, Sukhyun's mother berates Sukhyun to be cold to some girl and to forbid her from working at Well Being Home Shopping if she ever applies.
Then, Jongnam has hair clips on her hair... plays around with Kiwoong's aunt... and starts crying.
A few comments on this drama:
- Jongnam is ADORABLE. I know she's only a character - but Kim Ah-Joong is a cutie. She reminds me a little bit of a girl I dated once (yes, she was Korean and so am I). She's also my favorite character - and her best performance IMO was when she confronts Sukhyun and says... (sorry guys, I won't go with the subtitles, which often SUCK) "Leaving a person alone, lonely, and frightened... I thought I might die."
- Kiwoong is hilarious. I first saw him a decade ago in a drama in which he was the younger brother of 3 daughters; one of them was played by Kim Hye-Sun. Loosely translated, the English name of that drama was "Bathhouse Men." He fits into the stereotypical dense nice guy without an iota of cunning... easily picked apart by clever women.
- The dynamic between Minsook and Yojin (Sukhyun’s mom, whom some here call “Nara”) is interesting, perhaps as a sub-plot; as someone mentioned, perhaps Jaeman and/or Yojin are not the couple he lives with. But I also find it interesting in that there is an undercurrent of tension stemming from the socioeconomic chasm separating the two families. This, I know from experience: large gaps in wealth are often a divider, or at least, a source of tension in Korean families.
- However mean, dry, and bossy Byungdoo (Haein's father) is, I like him much better than Sukhyun's whoremongering dad. And, I liked it a lot when he told off Sukhyun, said "why would you have dinner here? Do you have any rice stocked here? Leave!" and later told his wife he wishes to spend not a penny on Sukhyun. However unlikeable his personality, he does have an eye for character - and he rightfully saw what a playboy Sukhyun's dad is (and which Sukhyun thus far appears totally capable of being.).
- Another point about Byungdoo that I liked was the one time he showed his more congenial side (when he drank at home with Haein) and said he should never have allowed Okdoo to marry her ex-husband. IMO, this is one way in which this (and many other dramas) convey traditional Korean cultural mores. Byungdoo’s attitude towards Okdoo is almost father-to-daughter rather than brother-to-sister. Believe me – my dad has a sister roughly 15 years younger than him and treats her almost like a sister!
- Dajung, Kiwoong’s little sister, is very cute too. But she’s very bratty – and I hated her until I saw the episode when she blew up at her mother and said her mother never supported her. I felt bad for her because I realized how she, as a high school student, is under tremendous pressure, and she is vulnerable to the peer pressure re: materialism in a society notorious for measuring people on strictly superficial and material terms.
- However attractive, educated, hardworking, and polished Haein may be, I find her to be a rather boring character. Don’t get me wrong – she seems like the perfect daughter-in-law and girlfriend. But, she has no spunk, she doesn’t show much personality (other than the time she got upset when Kiwoong told her friend he proposed to Haein 100 times) and was quite b.itchy when she flat out told Kiwoong he had no future. The man had brought her to Cheju for fresh fish, and couldn’t she have turned him down in a nicer, yet firm way? Typical arrogant princess. Jongnam in contrast may be poor and an orphan, but she seems to be far more righteous than Haein.

HAHAHAHA... tonight's episode ends with Jongnam as the new monitor of the team headed by Haein (which means Jongnam and Kiwoong will be coworkers as well as "cousins.") Then, SukHyun walked in and Haein appeared oblivious to the bad blood as they "introduced" themselves. LOL!
