She refused to leave unless he left first, telling him she was going to follow him home.
To defuse matters, Sukhyun walked back to his car. He didn't go around to help Jongnam pick up the scattered postcards, rather stood at the driver's side door, looking at her. She looked at him with tears in her eyes, he got in the car and drove away. Nara backed her car out of the parking space, paused for several seconds as she looked at Jongnam through the rear view mirror, then drove off.
Jongnam is heart broken as she picks up the postcards and carries them into the lonely apartment. She doesn't turn on the lights, just goes into the bathroom to wash her face. Her mother comes home, sees her red and swollen face and asks what's wrong, what has happened? Jongnam denies anything is wrong, and tries to play it off saying she bumped into a door or wall, excusing herself to her room.

Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
I'm glad to see Haein getting support. I haven't really understood the major dislike for her. I don't think she's mean-spirited or coldhearted in the least. She's just "well conditioned".
Someone made the comment that Haein and Sukhyun are too much alike, and I think that's dead on. Both of them have been rigidly indoctrinated, and both of them have accepted the indoctrination without resentment or rebellion. As Americans, I think we value "independence" and "individualism" so highly that we don't understand H and S's compliance with what is expected from them -- we actually think there is something wrong with them! Here, it's all about "love" -- the over-the-top romantic stuff. But most other cultures have recognized that that kind of love is a pretty unstable platform for a relationship; if you want the relationship to last, you'd better have something else (family support, shared goals) to build on. In America, we insist on following our hearts, and finding out that lesson the hard way, couple by couple -- how "bizarre" to see children actually accepting the wisdom of their forbears with little question!
I think Haein and Jongnam are examples of opposite ends of the spectrum. Haein has bought the conditioning, hook, line and sinker. I think she really thinks that she is "in love" with Sukhyun, because to her, "in love" means "I've found the perfect partner to share the life that everyone -- including myself -- expects me to have." They've barely held hands, much less kissed, but she's happy with the relationship.
Jongnam, on the other hand, grew up without the conditioning, so she's a bit of a "feral child". I thought her comments last night were so true: she does need to learn how to control herself, to temper her emotions, to be more considerate. If I bumped into someone and we both tumbled to the ground, I'd apologize for my part in the crash, even if I thought it was largely the other person's fault! Some degree of social conditioning is necessary to keep us all from succumbing to "road rage"! I, too, have found Jongnam irritating on some occasions; unbridled enthusiasm is not always endearing!
I think the point of the show is that everyone is moving toward the middle. Haein told Kiwoong that she sometimes feels intimidated by Sukhyun -- he's so perfect, how could you let loose with him? She enjoys the time with Kiwoong, because he's more natural and more comfortable. He is to Haein what Jongnam is to Sukhyun -- a breath of fresh air! But it still doesn't occur to Haein to compare how she feels when she's around Sukhyun to how she feels when she's around Kiwoong, because her feelings are compartmentalized away from all those expectations. Sukhyun's a little ahead of her there. I think that's what the whole recreation of the "un-date" was about: buying chicken feet and smoothies, which were fun with Jongnam, but rather boring with Haein. He's not quite there yet, but he's beginning to suspect that something other than what his family expects makes him happy. As Jongnam tries to learn to "toe the line" a bit better, things really become more interesting! Now we'll just see if Haein can loosen her corset strings enough to really enjoy Kiwoong . . . I'm still not sure that that relationship is going to work out!

Your description of how Jongnam felt makes my heart really hurt. I know how she feels because I had a similar experience myself. What Jongnam felt, picking up those postcards and crying, makes me weep. It's like her being an orphan all over again. Picking up from the floor and all, it's too much. I pitied her.. She was so nice, that she didn't even say anything back at all, or even mentioning the way she felt to her mother. I admire Jongnam's strong will since this episode.
Ohh, and Maybe1, I agree with you there. Jongnam is Kiwoong, while Sukhyun is Haein. Put them together, they all contrast each other well. I do really want Haein to loosen up. I want her to party, to jump, to smile, to let her hair loose and be free! I want her to open up, and especially to someone like Kiwoong who cares so deeply for her. Once I see that, once I see her face smile and admire the true and kind nature of Kiwoong, I would admire her as much as any other character in the show. It's still early in the series, and Haein will sooner or later reach that point. It's just a matter of time when everything comes together.

K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
Why do we all dislike Haein? I think basically for two reasons--first we are all hopeless romantics here, and we want poor orphan Jongam to have happiness, and Haein is standing in her way. Second, we mustn't forget that the writers haven't made Haein a very sympathetic character, but they have made Jongnam a sympathetic character--they've laid it on kinda deep for us about Jongnam--just think back to all the troubles she has already endured--thrown out of a friend's house, being robbed of what little money she had and on and on. Also I feel certain the characters evolve in the writers' minds as the series continues and the more they develop Haein the more she becomes less likeable. She doesn't show her heart to us as Jongnam --she's a bit self absorbed and too worried aout her image--Confucius would be very upset with her behavior.

It tugs my heart to see Sukhyun's facial expression everytime he is around Jongnam and vice versa. But how come Haein does'nt see it?
Korean Scorpio's "penny": I just think Haein has always been put on a pedestool, that she could do no wrong. Her parents dote her like a princess and so she expects Sukhyun not to feel anything towards Jongnam because she's supposedly not in his league. I dunno. All in my opinion, of course.
Korean Scorpio: I admire you for defying your father, not that I advocate rebellion against parents. But I do believe that in the matter of love relationship, nobody should come between people in love. I did'nt like my son-in-law very much because he is very arrogant and take elderly people for granted. But my daughter love him so much and I could'nt tell her to forsake him. That is why I cannot believe how parents in Korean family insist their will to their children.
Korean Scorpio's "penny": Believe me, it was tough confronting my father. I called myself the family rebel. But I was just nicknaming myself that for fun. I was just following my heart and trying to convince my parents how truly, deeply in love I was with my husband. I was never ever disrespectful to my parents in the American way. I never cursed or anything psychotic. ha ha But I certainly was disrespectul to my parents for not obeying their wishes. Soooooo, hopefully, others can see that my "rebellion against parents" was all for the good for my husband is a very humble, good-hearted, giving, sharing man who loves to eat Korean food and is eager to learn to speak and write more of the Korean language, which makes my parents feel very grateful. Now my dad just LOVES my husband and jokes with him saying, "Are you sure weren't raised by Korean adoptive parents?"
I am glad you have welcomed your son-in-law. I hope your relationship with him will continually blossom.
Korean Scorpio: In modern day Korea, is it still very common for parents to marry off their children thru matchmaking? What percentage of matched marriage is successfull against failure? Is divorce allowed in Korea? First off, I have added replies in between quotes above. I wasn't sure how to separate the quotes, so sorry for any extra reading.
(1) Yes, it is still very, very common for parents to marry off their children through matchmaking.
(2) Sorry, I don't know the statistics or percentage rates regarding the success of matched marriages.
(3) Divorce is allowed in Korea.
Another personal tidbit: My grandparents were the ones I really, really had to impress with my husband. My husband was like, "Let's show them what we've got!" ahhhhh.... such a sweetheart
My grandfather immediately got along with my husband. My grandmother asked me for my husband's date of birth and then hurriedly went to a fortune teller to get a reading on our future in marriage. Turns out that my husband and I are soulmates and in our past life we were royalty. Okay, okay... now I'm just saying what was told to me and I got a good laugh out of all of this reading. But in modern-day Korea, fortune tellers are still asked to do marriage forecasts, which then brings on the matchmakings and arranged marriages.

Others are commenting on the ancient episodes now being broadcast on the East Coast. Maybe I will be here more often after all. class blockquote lettle wrote:I just watched episode #48 where Kiwoong's grandmother finds out that Haein is not his girfriend, but was Sukyun girlfriend. I knew his grandmother was going to be upset, but I didn't know she would be that upset. Now I can kind of understand why Kiwoong didn't want to tell her.Yes, I understand too, but that is no excuse for his irresponsibility. class blockquote lettle wrote:I did not like the way Haein spoke to Kiwoong. I know he should have told his grandmother but she was a little harsh. She also had the chance to tell her too. In the first place she should have never gone along with the idea in the first place, she had already told Kiwoong she didn't like him in that way. I'm not saying she shouldn't have been mad but she also could have been less harsh.I disagree.
I am no fan of Haein, but as I wrote in an earlier post, Kiwoong put her in an EXTREMELY uncomfortable and awkward situation in front of the entire Jang clan. It was horrible enough this involved Grandma AND Sukhyun's parents; that Jongnam's mom, Dajung, and Kiwoong's parents were all there. Kiwoong doesn't deserve to be coldly treated by Sukhyun's mother, but his actions created a harmony-breaking event. This is a serious issue which non-Koreans may not understand.
Haein, as I'm sure is known, has few fans on this board; but, however dislikeable she may be (and she's a lot less despicable than Nara), she could have been far harsher. She had already been mean to Kiwoong (you have no future) at Cheju Island. IMO, she would've been justified in being harsher. class blockquote lettle wrote:As for Sukyun getting upset at Haein in the car, oh my goodness, he has some nerve, he is harboring feelings for Jongnam. I know he had the right to be mad but he could have been a little more understanding considering his feelings for Jongnam.I disagree again. At this stage at least Sukhyun seems not to realize his feelings are more than friendship or warmth towards a person whose entire life has been marked by the total opposite of the luxury that has been commonplace for him since birth. He was spoiled rotten; he didn't know that there was such a thing as orphans in this world (he asked Jongnam's mom, "Aunt, so there really are kids who have never known their parents?")
The moment Sukhyun cheats on Haein, I'll bash him myself. Till then, I will even say he was right to support his own cousin - he had previously warned Haein not to lead him on. class blockquote lettle wrote:It seems everytime Sukyun sees Jongnam his face just lights up unlike when he sees Haein, to me it seems like he's just polite to her no real passion. I loved the part when S and J were eating lunch together. When she was eating the chicken feet, I swear S wanted to lick the sauce off her face, that's the feeling I got.
I know you guys are ahead of me but I needed to write about this episode. She's adorable all right. Reminds me vaguely of an ex-girlfriend of mine - she was hot-tempered and blunt and came from a painful background. Ah... dramas, they always touch our emotions.

I just finished watching the amusement park episode and how it leaves off with Minsook seeing Jongnam coming home with Sukhyun in his car.
Jongnam is very pretty with her hair down. I would love to see Haein put her hair down and wear more skirts (she actually wore a skirt in one episode). Haein would definitely raise eyebrows. Wow, Sukhyun is really cute, too. He and Jongnam are like a little boy and a little girl in elementary school; they're in love and have no idea how to act, especially when a arm is put around one's shoulder. So cute!
Okdoo and Sukhyun's dad... you know, they really crack me up. They really do. I thought it was so sad when Okdoo was talking to her 7-year-old son on her cellphone and how much she misses him. That was so sweet of Sukhyun's dad to buy a winter jacket for Okdoo to send to her son. Sukhyun's dad... (can't remember his name), poor guy has been terribly neglected by Nara.
K-comedy trivia tidbit: Nara and Kiwoong played as Mom and Son on an old Korean sitcom called "L.A. House" or something like that in the '90s. (I loved that show and to see Park Jungsoo as Nara now..... huge difference in character portrayal, of course.)
