Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
this drama is sure running up against all my fav. past drama...hehe. i think this has just as much twist as YH (i love that one too - longest one i've seen).
about Sukhyun's citizenship...i think the family was confused about him being born in America and not about the fact that he's a US "citizen" (well maybe that too). I think Sukhyun is just confused about the fact that he has the citizenship by right b/c he was born in the US. I think/believe that you can get an MBA even if you're not a citizen. I assume that he went to study in the US on a student visa. I have a friend who had been going to school here since sophomore year of high school until now (we're in our 5th year of college), and she's not a US citizen. She's an international student from Japan (and the tuition is exceptionally high for them ). She's on the student visa and she had to renew it periodically. She can drive and do pretty much everything that a US citizen is allowed to do except for voting and applying for a job. With a job, you would need an international working permit - only some company would accept that. At my school...there are a lot of international students getting their BA/BS/MBA in different majors. After finishing their degree, most of them go back to their home country to work. Only a few would remain here and get their citizenship. So that could be the case for Sukhyun.
i really can't wait when Jongnam became the guest for the company's commercials. Nara will have a major fit...hehe.
Happy watching tonight episode.

I had to miss last night's show, and I'm so curious about this "Sukhyun the American" issue. Could someone post a summary?

Okay, I just love Kiwong spirit, he is such a happy guy. Haein gets on my nerves, she needs to stop playing with Kiwong's feelings. Kiwong mother is so subdued. I can't wait until Haein family finds out that her aunt is infatuated with her boyfriends father. That ought to be really explosive.

Korean Scorpio: Thanks for your "pennys" I was so happy reading it. Some episodes in this drama parallel our lives and it is so nice to have a discussion with people who were touched. Oh, I am so glad you found my "pennies" in between the quotes. I feel the same exact way watching these episodes and being able to relate in some way or another. I thoroughly enjoy reading these threads, participating and learning new things each day (and not just about the K-drama itself). I especially think it is wonderful knowing that there are other people out there (who are not even Korean) really hooked onto these Korean shows. I was ecstatic when I first found this message board through random web-surfing. Awesome! Love hearing from you guys and thanks for letting us folks from the east coast join this board/thread for discussing "CJKDramas Available in CA." I am clueless about whether or not there is such a board/thread for CJKDramas Available in VA (or Washington, D.C./metropolitan area), but I am very happy checking in here. Happy viewing!

Perfect explanation (I agree with your assessment on why the family would be confused and then further confuse Sukhyun) and nice story above. I had known classmates from college who were studying from abroad with student visas requiring periodic renewal. Some returned to their native countries and others stayed to pursue U.S. citizenship and employment.
Hmmm... so Jongnam is going to appear on TV, huh? I knew it! She is probably going to rise to fame. Hope so and then give Nara more slaps in the face than she can ever handle. (Kim Ahnjoong did some modeling before she started to act.)

But you seem to be ahead of us because New Jersey hasn't reached episode 50 yet. And that episode is tonight. Phew....
There is something I would like to point out though......I LOVE Haein's style. lol.

I had known classmates from college who were studying from abroad with student visas requiring periodic renewal. Some returned to their native countries and others stayed to pursue U.S. citizenship and employment. Now I'm even more confused. Again, I didn't see last night's episode (help!), but in previous episodes, I thought Sukhyun's confusion was that he had not known that he was born in America. Wasn't that what he expressed surprise over when Haein mentioned his US citizenship? If he had known that he was born in America, he almost certainly would have known that he had US citizenship -- it's obviously a big deal to Nara, as she's the one who suggested to Haein's mom that his citizenship would come in handy if they needed to get away to America, and surely she would have mentioned it at sometime during his life. Anyway, it's pretty common knowledge that US birth equals US citizenship. And why the dramatic surprise? We're obviously being signaled that this is a BIG DEAL. I can think of only three explanations:
1. Sukhyun forgot that he was born in America: Okay, he's a bit dense, but THAT dense?
2. He really wasn't born in the US, and Nara is lying (maybe part of the adoption issue -- she went away to have a baby, and came back with one): But then Sukhyun really wouldn't have US citizenship, so everyone would find out when he and Haein tried to go there -- rather awkward for Nara. Why would she tell Haein's mom he's a US citizen if he's not?
3. He really was born in the US, but Nara never told him: How would he not know? He's had to fill out applications all his life, and he's probably had to present his birth certificate a time or two. He didn't notice that it said "United States of America" across the top, instead of "Republic of South Korea"? In any case, Nara told Haein's mom rather freely that he'd been born in the US; it didn't seem to be a secret. If she had been keeping it from him all of his life, why would she suddenly toss that tidbit out to someone who was likely to broadcast it?
Okay, there's a fourth explanation: The writers have backed themselves in a corner. After laying breadcrumbs along a path of telling us that Sukhyun is not Nara's bio son, they are snatching them up behind us. At least twice now, Nara has talked about "having" Sukhyun: when she talked about her conception dream (she's pretty adament about having had one, and how can someone have a conception dream without conception?), and when she talked about going to America to "have" him. Maybe Nara doesn't even know that Sukhyun's adopted . . .
