Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
I do not believe that Sukhyun is an American citizen ,and I have no idea why Nara would have told that story . I think the story twist is interesting because Sukyun has never thought to question his birth and identity . This whole US citizenship story may bring his birth under a microscope ,and he may find out who he really is.
I think it will bring on an identity crisis ,and I think he will feel angered and betrayed. He's already got problems with Nara ,but I think he will hold it against all the adults of the Chang family .Why ? Because they all were part of a conspiracy of silence.
I mean,it's one thing to be adopted, but another not to be told about it. Lies,(conception dream)lies (US Birth )& more lies .He is an adult !
The only people that would be able to help him with the inevitable identity crisis is Kiwoong & Jongnam .
We are seeing a very subdued Jongnam ,a Jongnam in pain .She even acknowledged to herself that she looked different. She tried to throw out the postcards ,but can't bring herself to do it.
Sukhyun is extremely preoccupied ,but he still doesn't quite get it . Haien is starting to realize that something is up.
Another interesting moment was when K told his Gramma that he would meet the girl she wants him to if she would give S/H approval. She shouted NO ! and left.
BTW < I was following the discussion re arranged marriages with interest , but I am still opposed to them. Not just because of my culture because of a story in my family history.

Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
For the East Coasters who would have seen Episode 50 tonight:
As much as I abide by a LOT of my parents' ancestral Korean culture, and as important as I think it is for second-generationers not to forget their roots, I found the Grandma/Nara/Haein's mother scene TIRING and frankly, nauseating.
In all honesty, if I were a man of Kiwoong's age (late 20s by the show - and that's younger than my age now), I would be AGHASTLY embarrassed if my GRANDMOTHER personally told the mother of a girl I once loved that she wouldn't permit the wedding. I might feel even worse if that was my cousin.
Yes, I know this is a TV show; yes, I know TV shows often exaggerate real life, and I do know too that Korean TV shows strive to send messages of how Korean culture works on an everyday basis. BUT, that scene was a bit too BLAH for me. Equally if not worse was the line that Grandma said her deceased husband left a letter for his first love.
As a man who's had his girlfriends I can attest that men do not forget the women whom they deeply liked. But over time memories get fuzzy. They may not die entirely, but the little specific details of what made those memories special are not all remembered.
And, even if a real-life Korean grandma went this far, I would imagine the adults in the generation following hers (in this case, Kiwoong's and Sukhyun's parents) would convince her to change her mind.
I like this show, but this Grandmother involvement was a bit too much for me. IF anything it reminds me of how tiresome and frustrating relationships can be in a Korean setting. If Grandpa, Grandma, Great Uncle, bla bla bla have an issue... oh boy.

Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
On a happier note, I liked the one-on-one scene between Haein and Byungdoo. He smiled broadly, which he never does with his wife, and he displayed how he felt as a father as his only child was about to leave home to begin her married life.
(It's SO predictable and frankly annoying that these Korean shows play the most disgustingly adorable, cute, pretty, or silly musical tunes according to the situation. THat dramatic music when Grandma confronts Haein's mother. The pretty melody in the Haein-Byungdoo scene above. The countless times there was that cute, happy happy joy joy dance melody when Jongnam and Sukhyun are together. And, the pretty, lovely melodies in scenes that are NOT exaggerated and genuinely display honest human emotions - such as when Kiwoong's mother and Sukhyun dropped off Dajung for her exam. I was moved not only because it was so touching to see an entire family rally in support of the youngest child, but also because it reminded me of my own parents quasi-smothering me when I was a kid, being so nitpicky even as I passed the age of 18. I am certainly biased - but the love from Korean parents is amazing indeed.)

... and then give Nara more slaps in the face than she can ever handle. metaphorically-speaking that is..... Jongnam would never dare slap Nara in the face because that's asking for murder ;)Ohh Korean Scorpio, you're on the east coast as well? Cool! But you seem to be ahead of us because New Jersey hasn't reached episode 50 yet. And that episode is tonight. Phew....
There is something I would like to point out though......I LOVE Haein's style. lol.
Tonight's episode for me was #53. You know... I love Haein's style, too. She really looks perfect with her style. It's just the same stuff in different colors. But that's all good. It's just her signature look. I love how she does that chopstick-thing with her hairbun and especially love the jewel-like accessory that dangles from it. I think it would be really funny though to see her jump on a bed, wildly dance to some music while shaking her loose hair... like Kevin Bacon-style in Footloose! That'll be the day.

K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
I think the writers have Haein wear her hair in that tight bun with chopstick in it for a reason--it shows how uptight and traditional she is. She operates her life from that tight controlled vision--never a hair out of place--old fashioned things in her hair. I think Jongnam has worn in her hair down because she is wild and crazy and exuberant.
I think it's just another way for the writers to show us the two ways of life their looking at in this drama.

Maybe1: I liked your 4th explanation. The writers probably thought that they can get away with not having to clarify the citizenship issue. Since this drama was made mainly for Korean audience, they never thought that a group of people like us would be surgically analysing and critique-ing every and all aspects of the main characters' life. They should not float info that is half-baked, otherwise, they'll be caught red in the face.Wow. Once I see that episode where this whole citizenship topic sparks up, I am really going to pay attention to the spoken dialogue since, sometimes, the English subtitles are not very accurate... or are not specific enough. I have noticed how characters are saying more than a couple of meaningful lines and there is just a very brief, too concise of a subtitled/translated sentence at the bottom of the screen.
I can just imagine the panel of writers doing an all-nighter to come up with a new sketch of ideas and here they are saying to each other, "Oh, crap, we're totally screwed on this citizenship story." LOL

Loved your input, too. I totally understood everything you were expressing about the Grandmother/Nara/Haein's mom scenes, etc. Yeah, it's hard to watch sometimes. That's when I start to tune out a little. It's funny how you were describing the background music because that helps prepare me for upcoming scenes. For example, if I had gone to the kitchen or bathroom, which are not far from our television in our living room, and I hear a specific tune that beckons me to hurry... off I dash to see what's going on! ;)
