Yeah--he's a horn dog and she's the ice queen--what a marriage. I wonder why she keeps him around.

Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
I just saw tonight's NY are episode. Not sure what number it is. But it's the one where Nara slaps Jongnam. I'll get to that in a second.
There are a few things I wanna address in this episode. Those of you in California who read this - you may want to read this post. It will probably be lengthy, and I'm going to take a different route here. Koreans and non-Koreans, your honest input is always welcome.
Tonight we learned from Haein's mother that Sukhyun is a US citizen and that his mother had him in the United States. I have met a few Korean persons of my generation who were able to attend college in the US as domestic citizens, and this of course is a great benefit.
Having said that, I find this something I dislike. I'll go far as to say that mothers of ANY country - and it is a fact that there are illegal immigrants who have kids here in the US of various nationalities.
Now, I understand the whole bit of parents doing what they can to improve their children's future. Placing them in a position to access better schooling opportunities is one of them, and I have nothing but respect for hardworking, self-sacrificing parents (Americans and immigrants) who break their backs to lovingly provide a better life for their kids.
At the same time, US citizenship isn't something to be abused. The US system is wonderful, but it has loopholes people take advantage of. There are nations in the world where citizenship is not automatically granted as it is here in the United States.
I was not born in the US, but I've been here more than 20 years; I immigrated legally, held my green card, and duly followed the naturalization process. So, I know what being an immigrant is like.
To have US citizenship is a privilege. It confers the right to vote in US elections. And, it makes us eligible to serve in jury duty (not the most fun way of demonstrating service to the nation, but hey).
People who have their kids here simply so they will escape military drafts back in their homelands or so they can go to American colleges as US citizens seem to me NOT to know what being an American is all about. And yes, I know there are Americans living and working abroad who have chosen NOT to live in America permanently again.
There are foreign women who come here pregnant, have their babies, get their infant's US passport through a lawyer, and get out. WHAT right do such people have to be US citizens - to enjoy the privileges conferred by American citizenship?
This will probably never happen, but if Congress passed laws - or heck, if the Constitution was amended - so that being born on US soil no longer automatically conferred citizenship ... I would fully approve. Being a citizen of this country - or of any country - is a privilege, not something to be abused. And I doubt citizens of other countries would like it if Americans had their kids there just so their kids could enjoy the benefits given by those countries' citizenships.
NOW - back to the show.
Nara having slapped Jongnam.
Even if later on Nara realizes Jongnam wasn't at fault (and I don't expect her to apologize), she would never apologize. Not just because she's arrogant and looks down on ex-orphan Jongnam, but because this is a Korean setting.
In an American, or in any western setting, a 20-something year old being physically attacked by a person 25 years older is plenty of justification for the younger party to strike back equally, or at least, to throw a fit. In a Korean setting, hitting back is taboo. This is IMO a factor of Korean culture which has embittered many younger Koreans (and I mean Koreanized Koreans. They simmer and stew with anger but they are taught by their culture to hold it in and to hide their emotions. It is no wonder I've been told by Korean expatriates who once outside Korea that they feel free and at ease - that they are not "bound" by cultural obligations. This of course changes if they are embedded within Korean communities).
I"m glad I've gotten to the point I will strike back, physically or verbally, if struck first. And I know that this sounds strange to the non-Koreans here... but believe me, it's a cultural thing.

APPLAUSE! APPLAUSE! Great answer Nchristi---that woman gives me cold shivers--I hope in the end she's left penniless and alone. And I guess since Korean courts still favor men to an extent she might lose everything if she were to divorce Jae-min.
Good observation about Nara too--she doesn't seem hurt or crushed by her husband's affairs, only annoyed that she might be embarrassed.

class blockquote addie04Happy A - nice to hear from you again ! And yes ,I know there are countries where being born there does not automatically confer citizenship....Britain,for one .Do NOT get me wrong. I UNDERSTAND why mothers/fathers would go to such lengths to get their kids better futures. In one sense it is a very pragmatic attitude which gets results - and results is what counts. But, it can be shady, selfish, and opportunistic.

Happy Ajushee--I don't think it sounds strange. Often when watching Korean dramas I am amazed how the younger people can sit still while they are being beaten by a parent for some trangression. I would be livid, but that's because I see it through my Western values. As a young girl in Florida, my ex-military father often punished us by spanking us with his belt. I laugh now because I know today someone would arrest my father for that kind of abuse. But I would not have hit my father under any condition. I stood there and took what I was given. I think here in America we have come to recognize that it is possible to abuse your child--that children are not battering rams. I think Korean culture must place a heavy burden on children, but I think it also offers a great deal of comfort to a child since families seem to support each other so much. I guess every culture has it's bad points and good points--it's all in how you experience the culture.
