Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
While so many characters are confusing at the beginning, I think we'll find that during the long-haul (6-7 months), these different groups will enable us to remain more interested when certain parts begin to drag. One thing I like about so many characters is that it will prevent us from being too emotionally invested in just one situation (as in MSMD), with the resulting frustrations a lot of us experienced.
Jongnam - Wow, I couldn't believe she erased the deceased son's message, either. I have an answering machine tape of my now-deceased mother's voice. I have put it away and probably will listen to it again on some rare occasion, but if anybody presumptuously erased it I would consider it unforgivable, too. An accidental erasure is one thing, but to make that life-decision for someone else, is just too arrogant. And stupid. (Yes, Jongnam and Minwoo were boyfriend/girlfriend. Wasn't that also a part of why his mother took in Jongnam?)
About the pairings of the young couples... What was with Haein imagining it was Kiwoong running ahead to the dance registration place and taking care of what needed to be done, when she was actually running with Sukhyun? Is she realizing that life with Kiwoong would be one of action and getting the job done, albeit in a financially poor world? What are her true feelings towards him? Hmmm...
As for Nara, I could be wrong, but I think she is about as stuckup, uncaring, and self-absorbed as they come. I didn't see her gift of the ribs as trying to smooth things over with K-Mom (Kiwoong's mom), as much as she was just trying to find out what set-off K-Mom—if it was merely K-Dad losing his government job and now working as a parking attendant. (Nara's refusing to acknowledge K-Mom's presence at her door, not even answering, spoke volumes.)
I've suspected from the beginning that there is some major event or circumstance that occurred within the family in the past, that nobody is talking about. I suspect, too, that MIL knows. MIL is too afraid of Nara and K-mom is afraid on some level, too, having stifled herself all these years and only trying to speak up when she couldn't contain it any longer that day Nara came over. (And why was MIL so threateningly telling K-Mom she should bow and scrape to Nara? Nara isn't supporting K-Mom's family, so what's being held over their head—since this was before K-Dad lost his job?)

K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
In ep one, where her room mate is evicting her, the room mate says, "You have a rich brother." My geuss is that it's the wrong sense of "Oppa".

I think the roommate that was evicted (by the other roommate) is the sister of Byungdo. Not Jongnam. Evicted girl had to move back home with her brother Byungdo and his wife (Haein's parents).. The sister of Byungdo is married and has a child. She was kicked out by her husband and came to live with Haein's parents. That's one scene.
Then there were two single roommates, Jongnam and her crazy friend who always wants to borrow money. The crazy friend kicked out Jongnam—without any notice—so her boyfriend could move in instead. Jongnam had nowhere to go, but she was working in a nice bar/restaurant at the time and she started secretly living in the storeroom, until the manager discovered it and fired her. class blockquote I didn't know that Jongnam and Minwoo had been a couple. She has such a secretive past so I didn't know what the heck was going on and how she had come into the picture to begin with (also missed the first couple episodes)... She talks about her parents but it seems she is really just an orphan. Wonder what her real story is.Yes, Jongnam and Minwoo were dating. In one scene in the storeroom, she gets drunk on a leftover bottle of wine, lamenting how she's all alone, now that Minwoo had left her (died). I don't recall the rest of her story. But everything she tells other people is fabricated, such as her rich family, traveling the world, being a college student, etc.

Oh my gosh!! Sorry. I had EVERYTHING wrong! I remember now that is WAS Jongnam who was kicked out by the roommate so she could move her boyfriend in. (sorry)
So the sister of Byungdo is living with Byungdo, and she has a child? Is the child with her ex?
I'm so confused. Maybe I should only watch one Kdrama at a time. I'm trying to watch three. LOL...No, you didn't get everything wrong! As we saw tonight, Jongnam and Minwoo were only friends who worked together, not boyfriend/girlfriend. And now we finally have the low down on Jongnam's background, a scrappy orphan fighting her way to survival.
As for Byungdo's sister, yes, she has a child whom the father is keeping. There was a scene in a previous episode where Haein's father, at night, walked by his sister's room in his pajamas and overheard her pitifully talking on the phone to her child (can't remember if it's a boy or girl). It touched his heart and he softened up towards his sister. It was immediately after this that he agreed to loan her the $20K to become partners in the coffee shop.
I wonder if Kiwoong has unknowingly hit upon something when he asked if Sukhyun is really the son of his uncle. ?

Nchristi , do the producers of these shows know what a following Kdramas have here? Just curious . For a long time it seemed they didn't have a clue. The only thing I know for a certainty is that there was a flurry of media attention (newspapers and internet articles) this year here in the United States regarding the popularity and significant following of Americans and non-Asian fans of K-dramas. I'm sure the sales of English subbed DVD sets to the American market has greatly increased, as well.
As for the producers in Korea, I have no knowledge in that regard. I'm sure their primary markets are other Asian countries. But, of course, if they could crack the American market, they could make some serious money. I am aware that certain entertainers, such as Bi(Rain), are seriously aiming at the U.S., but it simply isn't happening yet. I suspect it will take some time. However, the fact that the drama boards are increasingly popular here in the U.S. among non-Asians may be an indicator of the future.
Interestingly, an article I recently read on this subject indicated that the majority of non-Asians watching K-dramas are the religious right in the U.S., conservative Christian households that are looking for family-oriented programming, which the K-dramas continue to provide and most American programming does not.
