K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
I've been "lurking" for a few months and have been watching dramas for a few months before that. I wish I had found this forum sooner as it took me months to figure out that:
1. The dramas do not start on the hour or half hour.
2. Some are on all week, but most are on for 2 days.
Consequently, this is only the 2nd drama I have seen since the beginning (War of the Roses was the first) and without gaps. This drama was already running when I found this forum and it has really increased my enjoyment. I love all the viewpoints and interpretations. Also, I appreciate the insight given to me on a different culture. On that note:
A. I notice that Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentines Day appear to be celebrated in Korea. Does anyone know if this is true or something added to the dramas?
B. A six or seven day workweek appears to be the norm. Is this really the case?
Other questions I have had have been addressed within this (and other) forum(s), e.g. the position and power of a Mother-in Law, the reverence of elders, deserved or not, etc.
Now, my two cents worth on the main characters.
Haien & Jongman - I think they're almost identical in innate personality and temperament. The differences we see are due to their upbringing. They’re both sweethearts and gorgeous (yes, I’m male).
Kiwoong - the classic example of the good guy that finishes last.
Sukhyun – conditioned by his upbringing to suppress his “good guy” tendencies.
This is my first ever post. Hope it comes out O.K.

Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
WELCOME, ADwatcher!
Well, you did a good job for your first post! We're glad you finally outed yourself and joined us!
My first suggestion is that you go here to see all the dramas currently showing in the Northern and Southern California area. Also, if you click on the "Calendar" in the far left-hand column of each page, you will find a detailed calendar of all Chinese/Japanese/Korean programming. Both of these are very useful tools for seeing what is currently showing and what will replace each drama as it comes to an end.
Here are some comments on some of your items: class ul class li Some [dramas] are on all week, but most are on for 2 days. - The dramas that are on five nights a week are called the "daily dramas." class li I notice that Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentines Day appear to be celebrated in Korea. Does anyone know if this is true or something added to the dramas? - It's true. class li A six or seven day workweek appears to be the norm. Is this really the case? - Not sure about seven days, but have come across several Asian countries where the normal work week is six or six-and-a-half days a week.

K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
Hi Adswatcher, regarding your question about holidays, Christmas and Valentines Days are indeed celebrated in Korea, but Thanksgiving is not. There is actually another huge holiday that is somewhat akin to the Thanksgiving, called 'Chu-seok', which could be translated as the Autumn Harvest Day(s). It is perhaps the second most celebrated holiday in Korea (after the Lunar New Year's Day), with centuries of tradition behind it.

Yes, adwatcher, that translation word they use Thanksgiving is really the day that they do the honoring of ancestors--hold memorial rites. And Korea has been celebrating Christmas widely since the invasion of all those American troops during the Korean War--same as Valentine's Day--both originally Western holidays. Did anyone see the news that showed how important Valentine's day is Iraq.
I know ya'll are ahead of us, but it's been clear to me for awhile that Nara is NOBODY'S mother. I still think that Minsook is the mother and her husband is not the father--based on her great concern for Sukhyun and his ordinary interest. I can't wait to find out the truth.
Last night Grandma showed up at Nara's for the B'day party so now the truth is out about Haein--I know you guys are way past that--poor Jongnan who stayed home from the party--poor girl. But at least Jaemin told Nara to be nice to everyone or else.
It's obvious now that Nara has to maintain a relationship with Jaemin's family because they know the truth about Sukhyun--it's getting so involved.

Re: K-Drama: 별난여자, 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch/Peculiar Woman,Man)
Oh my gosh... Did ya all see the clips for tonite's episode? Looks like Jongnam and Sukhyun are going to repeat their initial meeting!! Tonite is gonna give me my weekend fix!!!!!
Also, it sure seems like the writers are putting Jongnam and Kiwoong together alot. Kiwoong appeared to kinda (almost) look at Jongnam differently than just a 'cousin'. PLEASE DON'T GO THERE... PLEASE!!!! She did tell him she thinks of him as a girlfriend. Someone to spend time with. But he was somewhat insulted by that. Wanted to know if she viewed him as a 'man'...
We didn't get any 'chance meetings' between Jongnam and Sukhyun last nite. I really missed that. I need those little glances, etc. that they give each other.
I laugh every time Haein's mother and father are on. They are extremely funny. When he (purposely) slammed on the brakes and her lipstick was riding up her face I was laughing so much. She is priceless. What a wonderful comedic character they have in her. Just love her!
Haein is getting anoyed with Sukhyun's indifference to her (I personally love it). So she is going to be even MORE suspicious of any encounters he has with Jongnam. I hate that Sukhyun is going to go through some crap because of that dna testing. I really want it to be Jongnam that comforts him but I am thinking that they will have it be Haein. I think it is possible that the writers will bring more depth to her character and will have Sukhyun see the compassionate, kind side of Haein. But I hope they don't go there.
When Haein refused to try on the silly hat and told him not to also it just showed him that she is set in her ways of being straight laced and serious. He was always that way too, until Jongnam showed him how to look at life with joy. He tried to give that wonderful givt to Haein but she refused it. I hope he never offers her that again.
I loved it Wed nite when Sukhyun was looking at Jongnam's picture.
I can't believe I feel this way but I REALLY wish I could see the very last episode. It's just so stressful to wonder if Jongnam and Sukhyun are really going to get together, or not.... If anyone ever finds out, please send me a private PM... :-(

Then, that scene where Jongnam is against the wall and Sukhyun unsteadily put his arms around Jongnam saying "sankaman" (wait a minute) ... Jongnam will probably "protect" Sukhyun by being with him somewhere while he sleeps off his drunken state, so nobody else sees his condition. Then....THEN... when Mommie Dearest finds out that her precious son "spent the night" with that trash, Jongnam, she'll really explode!
The bunny hat scene between Sukhyun and Haein was so pathetic, wasn't it? Actually, very sad. Even her father is more fun than she is! I laughed myself sick over the lipstick in the car routine, too! The actress who plays H's mother is so perfect for this role.
Okdoo is played well, too. Usually ditzy characters like her are at least slightly annoying to me, but I enjoy her a lot. She is such a sweet person and I actually find her voice and facial expressions endearing.
One thing that is funny to me is the K-Santas are usually thin! Kind of a slight culture shock to see Jaemin in a Santa suit without any padding.
Looking forward to tonight, too! If everything in last night's previews shows up in tonight's episode, we're in for a great one!
