Re: K-Drama: (The Innocent Woman)
nsheldon, one of our guy members called Ilhong's MIL "Liz Taylor." I like the real Liz Taylor, too, but every time I look at the MIL, I think of "Liz Taylor" and I can't remember her Korean name. In the beginning I began calling her "Con-mom", but that didn't "take," either. Guess I should just make of point of writing down the character's name and start using it. (Ooops, I see Pooka used "Okbun," so I'll have to make a mental note and start using her name.)
I felt bad for Mr. Seo last night, too. He's really smitten with Ilhong and seeing Namgi appear, assuming he's the father, kind of smashes Mr. Seo's dreams. Remember when he was staying up in the woods and Ilhong visited him? He told her that if you write your wish on a white birch tree, it will come true. One of these days we'll probably see the poignant scene showing what he actually wrote. I assumed from the beginning that it was a wish to find love with Ilhong.
Another question on Namgi... I notice that some write it "Namji." Is this how they spell it on KBS America (or wherever you're watching it)? On the KBS-LA version, it is "Namgi." No big deal... just curious.

Re: K-Drama: (The Innocent Woman)
Hi Folks!
I’ve been watching this drama pretty much every day for about a month now. I also caught an ep or so before that. All the eps that I missed didn’t seem to matter too much until this Nam-gi guy showed up.
This put me over the line as far as being able to follow what’s going on. Maybe with your help I can continue watching. I’ve read all the posts but there’s still a lot of blanks; to begin with...
The Mr. Seo – Okbun thing. It seems this guy cares for this gal, but he can’t get a divorce..Why Not?
The designer guy seems to be on a rebound from a previous relationship. Did his GF die? Dump him?
Okbun is Il-Hong’s MIL (?) yet Sarong is her daughter/granddaughter?
And the biggest mystery to me is Il-Hong’s children. I get that daughter #1 is from her husband who died somehow. And daughter #3 is Maybe her MIL’s; If so, why does she have D#3?
And... Daughter #2. It seems Nam-gi’s is her father, yet it doesn’t seem he and Il-Hong were close or married. Was it a one night stand? Or...? It seems there’s a lot of animosity there. Was it a rape? This is a topic I have not seen addressed in a K-Drama. Whatever or whichever the reason, I get that Il-Hong was seriously wronged by this individual, yet she is willing to forgive? I know she’s a forgiving person but this seems to exceed normal/rational behaviour. I adhere to the adage “Fool me once, Shame on you”. “Fool me twice, Shame on me”
Anyway, whatever the circumstances. I’m about ready to give up on this drama. Il-Hong’s behaviour is just too extreme for my tastes.

Re: K-Drama: (The Innocent Woman)
Hi ADwatcher! Nice to see you in this discussion. I'll try to tackle some of your questions....

I've never noticed what the old man's name is! I always think of Mr. Seo as the son-in-law working for Ilhong. Maybe they have the same name coincidentally.
The old man was very, very ill in the beginning of the drama, an invalid in bed. His wife has sort of kept him prisoner since then. It has always seemed odd to me why he can't get a divorce and takes all her baloney, but he does and can't seem to take a stand for himself. The designer guy seems to be on a rebound from a previous relationship. Did his GF die? Dump him? class ul I believe he was in love with an art teacher and, yes, she passed away and he had a tough time getting over it. Other than that, we haven't been told much about their relationship.Okbun is Il-Hong’s MIL (?) yet Sarong is her daughter/granddaughter? class ul Yes, Ilhong was married to Okbun's son (or was Okbun married to Ilhong's deceased husband's father?)And the biggest mystery to me is Il-Hong’s children. I get that daughter #1 is from her husband who died somehow. And daughter #3 is Maybe her MIL’s; If so, why does she have D#3? class ul Daughter #2 is the daughter of Okbun. According to what we have seen so far, Sarang (#2) is the child of Okbun and the old man.
How did Ilhong end up with Sarang (#2)? Seven or eight years ago, Ilhong's husband was hanging the sign to their new business when his ladder was hit by a guy on a motorcycle. The husband fell and died. At his funeral, Okbun suddenly shows up and dumps a baby onto Ilhong and runs away without explaining anything about the baby.
Okbun has a history of being a con-artist herself and was on the lam, that's why she had to find a place to drop off her baby. Ilhong has raised her since infancy and Okbun only showed up recently.And... “Fool me twice, Shame on me” class ul Nope, no rape involved. It was mutual. Namgi was working a legit job showing model homes. We didn't know he was a con-man for quite a while. Ilhong was just helping him out. To make a long story short, (my memory might not be too clear on this), Namgi came up with a scheme that since they were both homeless they should live together. They got a nice place somehow and Ilhong borrowed money for the down payment. She came home one day to find the place empty with a note on a cabinet door from Namgi. He was sorry but had run off with all the money.
As for getting pregnant, that was a surprise to the viewers, too. Namgi seemed very attracted to her and was always trying to get closer to her, but she wouldn't allow it. Later, we found out she did allow it. We really have no details, but it seemed he didn't really force himself upon her. Either she liked him or succumbed in a moment of weakness (probably a combo of both). In either case, her anger seems directed only at how he ran off with all her money, not that she got pregnant by him. And, of course, there's always the Korean conscience thing about always doing right by the father of your child—even if he is scum. The reason given always seems to be that the mother doesn't want the child to dislike or criticize her when the child grows up and starts asking about her father.Anyone who remembers more accurately, please jump in and correct. I'm not great at remembering details from so long ago.

K-Drama: (The Innocent Woman)
I have been watching this drama regularly, and I couldn't believe my eyes when Namgi walked into the workshop and started eyeing the good tools there! I bet he's going to snatch and sell them! This is my first post but I will be back because they just took down out Dish and we won't get new cable for 3 weeks! ARRRRGH!!
