I was told (by a non-expert) that VCRs would not work after Feb 2009 because they can only record analog and cannot record digital transmissions. So I'd have to go to a digital recording device, like TiVo.

Maybe I can rent one of these guys for perfect viewing any time! emoticon

I'm a non-expert myself, but I've been using my old VCR to record from the digital stations (thru the converter box) for the past few weeks and it seems to be working the same as always.

The converter box will convert the incoming digital signal to analog, so the VCR's should still work. Maybe the new sets with digital only tuners cannot record to VCR's, in that case, you might need to get a DVR.

Same here. I'm using a Symphonic TV/VCR combo, and it's taping fine.

I guess my problem is that my converter box requires that my TV be on channel 3 in order to see the digital programs that are being converted to analog. However, my Sony VCR also requires that the TV be on channel 3 to operate. For some reason, the converter box and my VCR can't seem to both operate at the same time on channel 3.

What I did was hook the cables from the video out and audio outs on my TV converter to my audio and video in on my VCR, and then have another set of cords hook my VCR to the TV. When I have my digital converter turned on, the digital stations appear on LN 1 (Line 1), otherwise it will be a blue screen if the converter isn't turned on. This way I can tape the digital channels as well as use my VCR when the digital converter isn't on.

Re: MBCD (18.3) - free 24hr over the air channel starting Aug 1 2008

Well, darn, I should have come here before I did anything, which in my case seems to be to spend money so that nothing works!

I gave my converter box coupons to my sister, who has 5, that's FIVE, televisions, in a 5-room house!!! (she doesn't have one in the bathroom!!!!) I couldn't believe it--but she's always been a TV addict, it's always on whether she's in the house or not. Then, I bought an LCD flat screen and rabbit ears (I did a fair amount of reading on the web first, including TVFool). There's never been an outdoor antenna on my house. I discovered that, so far, the LCD works GREAT as long as I'm watching a DVD! The antenna works so-so as long as I stand in the middle of the room holding it! LOL

So then a friend told me he'd install an outdoor antenna for me. It's now sitting in the garage. Of course, he's got several months, so I know it will go up.

I'm really concerned about being able to record programs. I don't have cable, and I don't want Tivo. I looked into cable and DirecTV, but that's expensive. I actually don't watch that much TV, unless it's Asian, so if or until Asian programming goes to cable, then I will. But channels 18 and 44 serve my purpose for the present.

In fact, if I wasn't a CJK-drama addict, I would have kept my converter coupon. For me, TV is just TV--it's not all that important for the picture to be "life-like." I've watched TV with snow for so many years that a clear picture looks phony! LOL

I'll go back and read all the posts--maybe there's something that will help my particular--peculiar--situation--I have been so confused. This is the best board! Thanks!!!

Schedule isn't accurate yet. High Kick is listed as airing at 11:00AM, but Olympics is on instead.
High Kick now only airs anywhere between 10:50 to 11:30PM, which sucks since I have to abandon watching Chilwu The Mighty and MBC entertainment news to watch when High Kick starts. =\

Other than that, looks like H.I.T and Goong are gone from MBCD.
