SYNOPSIS by DramaWiki class ul The drama is about the third empress of the Goryeo era who fought against the Tungusic people of Manchuria in order to achieve their dream of reclaiming their old land.OFFICIAL KBS SYNOPSIS class ul The stereotypical view of womanhood on screen is changing. Different from the past, showing the passive and modest nature of women, recent dramas illustrate women with grand authority and active spirit. However, most of the historical dramas are still presenting the submissive images, woman as a subordinate who gives birth to children to carry on the family lineage, or a political tactician who takes part in conspiracies and causes internal wars in the palace.
The 'Iron Empress' is incompatible with the previously known images of women in history. She is the granddaughter of Wang Gun, the first emperor of Goryeo. She has inherited her grandfather's vision as well as his Great Spirit. The empress fights against the enemies trying to destroy Goryeo, and as ‘The Iron Empress’ she gets rid of her brother, son, and even her lover, for the good of the empire. During the Goryeo period, women had a firm stature and their power was as great as that of men. Introducing the legendary heroine, ‘The Iron Empress’ would bring hopes and dreams to the women living in this era.CAST and CHARACTERS from DramaWiki class ul * Chae Si Ra as Empress Chun Chu

Re: K-Drama: 천추태후 (The Iron Empress)
Gosh did you see this tonight???
What a battle to start things off. Huge battle bears let out of wooden cages to run the enemy down. So ridiculous but very funny. I wondered how they would round up such fierce creatures after. No mention made of that...
So far it is all rfghting and such intense stuff. I hope that we will get into the plot more in next weeks saga. Familiar faces in battle dress.
I think this may turn out to be interesting.
Peggy.

Re: K-Drama: 천추태후 (The Iron Empress)
One solid hour of fighting and more fighting. I always find it distasteful to see the horses tripped so the warriors go flying off in battle. They say the horses are 'trained,' but galloping along and suddenly being tripped by wires.... what training is there for that?! Makes me sick to my stomach, actually.
I laughed at those CGI bears and some scenes with guys in bear suits! But, as the Special mentioned, this was an actual battle tactic used in those days, so our K-drama producers had to do something to portray it. Can't blame them too much... but it was funny and a whole lot better than seeing a bunch of bears being abused in the name of entertainment.
I also thought it really incongruous to see our Battleaxe Femme speaking so boldly and warrior-like to the king one minute, then acting all feminine and weak the next when the king got tired of listening to her diatribe and had the guards drag her out!
Then there was one of her 'secret weapons' mentioned by the little boy actor in the special—her hair! I enjoyed seeing her whip off her battle helmet and flip her long, wavy hair around! Too funny. Speaking of head gear, the $10,000 USD helmet/crown was pretty spectacular to see in the Special. Some of the robes that are worn by royalty in these historicals are super expensive, too. They are indeed beautiful.
Chae Si Ra is a good choice for this role. She plays it well and looks the part, too. I have an indelible image of her in my mind as Lady Jami. I'm sure this drama will replace it, though! (I always get her mixed up with Choi Ji-woo. They look like twins to me.)

Re: K-Drama: 천추태후 (The Iron Empress)
nchristi,
count me in about the use of horses in battles. Hollywood used to go to Spain to do scenes where horses were illtreated. That is really what happens to animals all the time. I hate circuses and small zoos and even some larger ones. I particularly hate to see elephonts being abused.
I really think those horses were terrified in those battle scenes in this episode.

K-Drama: 천추태후 (The Iron Empress)
nchristi...I have been watching this show on KBS World. So far, we are just with the young Empresses and it's not at interesting. I do agree the women look so much alike that is uncanny. The actor playing the Emperor was in MY PITIFUL SISTER which is a morning program on KBS World. The ending was terrible and inconceivable.
I am confused about these program time changes. What is 44.1 and how does one get it? Channel 18 is doing the same, and the times are different also.
Could you

Could you [explain? ]Okay, this is more than you asked for, Pali, but for others, too, here's an overview of the current TV situation.
Originally, for decades there was free, over the air (analog) TV transmission, received on analog TVs. Then cable and satellite came along that are by subscription and have a monthly fee charged. The cable companies pick and choose the stations they carry in their various packages. (They do not choose to carry all stations that are available.)
People who did not want to pay for TV could still watch the free-of-charge analog/over the air TV stations by using a rooftop antenna or rabbit ears antenna.
Now, along comes Digital transmission and the government's decision to switch all analog (free, over the air) TV transmission to DIGITAL transmission. A lot of digital transmission will remain free to those who use an ANTENNA (indoor or outdoor) and have a digital TV. For those who still have the old analog TVs, you must get a DIGITAL CONVERTER BOX (converts the digital signal to an analog signal which your TV can receive) and also use an antenna.
Here's where Digital Station 44.1 enters the picture. This switch from analog to digital transmission is invisible to everyone who has cable/satellite service. However, the cable companies do not carry all the digital substations. (If you cannot receive 18.2 or 44.1, your cable service probably does not carry those stations.)
Since Channels KXLA 44 and LA18 are analog stations, they will no longer be transmitting after the June cutover date (extended from Feb 17). Instead, they are moving some of their former analog programming to digital stations. LA 18.1 is now showing SBS programming in the evenings. MBC is moving to 18.3. A lot of Asian programs will be seen on other 18.x substations.
KXLA (44) is also currently showing their programming on digital station 44.1. But I cannot find a KBS schedule for the digital station, 44.1. KBS America is still providing the analog 44 schedule (and schedules for Dish Network and TimeWarner), but not the digital station 44.1.
If you have an analog TV, or subscribe to a cable/satellite service that does NOT include 18.1, or 18.2, or 44.1, the only way to view these stations is with a DIGITAL CONVERTER BOX and an INDOOR or OUTDOOR ANTENNA.
Bottom line for cable/satellite customers is to check with your provider if they are carrying the particular digital sub-stations you are interested in. (People have posted that their providers do NOT carry these stations and the customer service reps don't even know what you're talking about.)
If, for example, station 44.1 is not carried by your provider, the only way you can find or watch 44.1 is with a digital converter box (not to be confused with your cable box) and an antenna.
I hope I have stated everything correctly here. But if not, I'm sure a techie will come along and correct it.
Edit: This is way off topic, so let's move any further discussion to the appropriate threads in our forum.
