Did anyone watch this one Friday evening?
Of course, I'm a total fan of Choi Ji Woo, so I have to watch this one. But I'm also impressed, just after one episode, by Yu Ji Tae. His career has been mostly in movies, not TV dramas.
From the previews, it looks like this might be a comedy??--it reminds me slightly of Mr. Duke, just superficially. However, the character played by YJT seemed to give it a really dark feeling. And it's obvious that Lee Mari has some dark secret.
I know the Korean ratings weren't all that great, but that doesn't bother me--I really enjoyed Worlds Within and that one didn't even make it to 20 episodes.
If there's a thread for this one, sorry, I didn't see it.

Re: Celebrity Lover
This is not a comedy but a romantic melodrama with all the problems you can think of.
I have not seen the ending but I would imagine Choi Ji Woo will get her man

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover)
Brad6, if you and I watch this one, it will be like Stained Glass! Remember, you and I seemed to be the only ones watching that one.
Well, I'm totally enjoying this one. So far, the acting is good and the direction seems very good. I'm really enjoying YJT. In fact, he is the best thing I've seen in K-drama for a long time. (hey, smoochie, if you're reading this, I think this guy is really attractive!! LOL)
Don't know yet about the story. Like you say, brad, it's a melodrama, but the Chulsu character is really damaged because of his past. Mari is damaged, also, in a similar way, but her reaction has been different from his. I suppose they will end up together, but, so far, that's not what is interesting to me. I hope the writers can sustain this level of complexity through to the end.
I also find Mari's agent interesting. One of his helpers is the girl who worked in Lohas, YAMD. I've seen the guy, assistant to the agent, in something else, I think. Either that, or it's because he resembles an actor whose name is escaping me at the moment! The one who is part of a singing group and recently went into the military!!!

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover)
Last night was my first time watching this drama. I didn't see which episode # we were on. I'll have to catch up on the first ones to get on board.
I found what I did see to be really intriguing. Especially Choi Ji Woo. The way she's portraying this celebrity is 'complicated,' as the male lead tells her. She's a very good actress. I like the male lead, too, but he hasn't stolen my heart quite yet. He has nice, long eyelashes, though! LOL! I guess what I like most about his character is that he isn't impressed with Mari The Celeb. He's just a nice guy who has his own backstory. What that is, I don't know since I've missed the beginning episodes, but obviously it has to do with the girl he gave the money to at the university dorm.
The only rub so far is sometimes the e-subs are a little hard to follow. Most translators will put off-screen dialog in italics, but this translator keeps the e-subs all the same, all the time. Several times I was confused as to which character was saying what and had to consciously decide what made sense.
I must say, though, that I've usually found SBS dramas to be very fascinating and well done. Maybe it's just because I've almost exclusively watched KBS and have come to the point of finding nearly all of them cliché and predictable.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover)
You only missed Episode 1, nchristi. This drama airs just once a week on Fridays. No cuts as far as I can tell, but I only have broadcast TV, so don't know if anything is missing.
What I like about the Chulsu character (besides the actor!) is that he conveys, to me, a layer of pain in everything he does.
I agree about Choi Ji woo. There was a scene last night that really stunned me--the look on her face. It was in that sequence where she was declaring that she could fake anything.
I've seen the girl playing the ex in something else, just recently, but I just can't place it, which drama it was.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
Ahhh, am finally watching Episode 1 and catching up on the beginning. Well-done and interesting drama so far.
The intro to the drama was quite different and interesting. At first I thought I was linked to the wrong drama! I guess that was Chul-su's voiceover during that part. I presume he is reading from his book? Before or after Mari enters his life? I couldn't tell if it was a flashback or not. Also, are Chul-su and Mari really the children who were together at the sea shore and are destined to find one another?
Both lead characters certainly suffered painful childhood abandonment. Chul-su must have been telling his class of teenage girls the truth when he said he was the illegitimate son of his unmarried parents. They called him Chul-su after a dog character at first, then the name stuck and they made it official. He falls in love with a young woman he finds out is the daughter of famous and rich parents, so he ends it because he isn't on her social/financial level and it will never work out. (Kind of like "A Star is Born," besides the fact her family would never accept him.)
Mari's parents went sailing and their boat went down in the storm, is that right? Then she was raised by her cold and distant aunt who seemed to run an orphanage or school of some sort. All the kids—young and older—picked on her mercilessly until she finally realized she had to make herself "loved" to get treated better. One thing led to another and because of her beauty and lively spirit she was "discovered" and became the top actress in Asia.
President Seo (Mari's boss) is a real creep, isn't he? The way he hauled off and slugged that young actress in the face to make her cry for a scene was a portent of what he's fully capable of. (How about how he took off his expensive watch first so it wouldn't get damaged!) I suspect he's going to be a world-class, scumbag villain in this one. (Is he the "director" whose marriage proposal was rebuffed by Mari, so he jumped off a bridge?)
An aside... In Seo's conversation with Chul-su he said he liked CS's writing, especially how he quoted Oscar Wilde about "rain" (which has not been authenticated as originating with Oscar Wilde, as far as I know): 'Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain. Nevertheless, a profound and Wilde-esque type expression.
The musical score is good. I'm enjoying the mix of classical and pop. Choi Ji Woo and Yoo Ji Tae are both cast perfectly as the lead roles. I also like the little mystery and shooting techniques they use here. We don't see clearly (yet) the face of Mari's lover (who left her when he went to buy vanilla ice cream). Also enjoyed how the director superimposed Mari's flashback memory at the historical site, Mari standing in the background as an observer of herself and her past.
Yep, I'm liking this one!
