Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
nchristi, I don't remember the "director" who jumped off the bridge. Where was that? Yes, Mari's parents were on the boat that went down in a storm.
I did think that both children were at the same place, that the aunt ran the orphanage. The little boy had a baby strapped to his back--that must be his sister, I think step-sister, probably. I haven't quite identified her yet or all the people Chulsu lives with.
Yes, he breaks up with the girl by drawing a line on the ground, as his mother did to him. In some of the scenes, he's like an open wound, it seems to me.
Chulsu seems afraid to find love, pushing it away, while Mari keeps looking for it, but it's always out of her grasp.
I hadn't been consciously aware of the music--I'll certainly listen. I have enjoyed the shot selection, not that it has intruded itself. But I have noticed that when I really like a drama, I start watching to see how the shots are set up, because the shot selection is almost like another character.

nchristi, I don't remember the "director" who jumped off the bridge. Where was that? I watched the unedited version on MySoju. In episode 1, part 5 (of 7) there is a lengthy scene after the party Chul-su attends to see/meet Mari. When he returns to the restaurant where he lives with all those women, he sits and talks at a table with his roommate, the internet gossip reporter (with the black glasses). Chulsu never asks about anyone, especially celebs, but he asks his friend about Mari without revealing why he's asking. Everyone gathers round...
The reporter then launches off into an animated description of Lee Mari's love life. She never dates a man for more than 100 days; the longest so far has been 80 days before she dumps them. There have been four serious pursuers with whom she was involved. class ul class li Son Ha Young (played by Ki Tae Young). Olympic gold medalist in skeet; youngest son of chaebol group "M" family; handsome, most eligible bachelor. class li Yoon Ji-Hoon (cameo played by Kim Ji Suk of Baekho fame), top K-actor rumored to be gay but totally smitten by Lee Mari. She dumped him, he got into alcohol, a DUI, and was just "buried." class li Kim Joo-Sik (played by Shin Hyun Joon, cameo role), department store magnate. Father "bit" him (bandage on forehead) and he fled overseas. class li Louie Jang (cameo played by Gong Hyung Jin), World class director. After being dumped, he becomes a "would-be suicide," shown jumping off a bridge. These are some amusing scenes. In carefully watching this again I can see the director is definitely not the same actor as the Evil President Seo.

Thanks! Shin Hyun Joon--you know I like him (I cannot watch him "die" in Rondo, even now). I'll drop by mysoju.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
I love the way both the leads are playing their characters. Choi Ji Woo is just perfect in this role! I really enjoy her ability to portray a rather spoiled mega-star who still, underneath it all, has a vulnerability button that Chulsu is happening to press. There's also a certain playfulness she shows that barely floats up to the surface. The result is that, though Lee Mari is a spoiled, pampered celebrity, we still like her and have a soft spot in our hearts for her. Wonderful performance by Choi Ji Woo.
Then there's Yoo Ji Tae. Perfect counterbalance. But then their characters are described within the drama as Chulsu being "rooted in the earth/grass," and Lee Mari as a "star in the heavens." That's pretty much what they are! He's about as emotional (on the surface) as a plant in dirt (LOL!) and she's as spectacular and bright as a star moving in the heavens. Typically, for this sort of man, he's frequently in a state of utter confusion about Mari and how she acts and thinks. For her, Chulsu can be as solid and grounded as the earth! Sounds like a good combination to me. They won't ever be fighting over who is the "star in the room," since only one person can be it in any room.
Enter the rich boy, the national Olympic hero! What a controlling... I was going to say jerk, but that's a little harsh at this point. But if Mari can't see the misery of a daily relationship with a guy like him as compared to Chulsu's kind and easy going ways —well, what can I say? Chulsu is rather firmly rooted in his own thinking, though. Some might call it being stubborn, while others see it with a positive slant and would call it admirably determined. In either case, one thing I very much like about Chulsu is that he later thinks about things he has said and done, then can change his mind, trying to set things straight.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
I missed about the first 10 minutes last night, so don't know if this scene was deleted or not. I first came in when Lee Mari and Mr. Seo were at the Japanese restaurant. This scene was just after the fan meet, before the Japanese restaurant... class ul The reporter friend meets up with Chulsu in a neighborhood bar. He is returning to Seoul later that night, since his company won't pay for a hotel. He shows photos of Mari to Chulsu, including one of the "popcorn dude." Reporter thinks it is very suspicious and his reporter's sense tells him there's something fishy about the man in the bag. CS gets nervous, but the subject gets changed.BTW, I have a question for anyone who can read Hangul. When Mari and Chulsu were at the park feeding the deer, the camera zeroed in on a word he wrote at the bottom of his note pad—something he ended with an exclamation mark or two. Anyone know what it said? It seemed later in the restaurant that might have been what he did not want her to read when she grabbed his notepad. ?? class ul After CS overhears the guy and girl talking about Mari acting suspiciously around CS, we see them walking by a seaway and CS shades Mari's face from the sun while her bodyguard holds an umbrella over her. She wonders what's up with CS? He apologizes to her for never having watched any of her movies. Just then a van with a film crew stops and jumps out to get an unplanned interview (Entertainment Tonight type stuff).
Later, back at the mansion, Mari and her two sidekicks sit in the living room watching the program. CS walks by and joins them. The girl pipes up that it would have been much better if Chulsu had been included. The guy says CS caused suspicion by insisting he not be photographed with them.
LM: You lied to your friends, didn't you... Ahhhh, now I see. I am a secret to you, too.
CS: In that sense, aren't we a secret to each other? (She smiles).
LM: You are right. We are a secret to each other. (Female asst picks up on all this but ignores it, changing the subject to how pretty Mari looks in the interview)
LM: Really? My hair was kind of messed up. You guys are always like that, though. (complimenting her) (Mari turns to Chulsu...)
LM: Am I pretty? (he can barely spit out a nearly inaudible sound meaning 'yes'
The TV interview suddenly shows Mari's ex-BF, the Olympic gold medalist, Son Ha-young (I'm going to call him "Skeet"). He has just flown in to Japan and is asked about Lee Mari. "What do you think of the scandals about Lee Mari?" LM's bodyguard jumps off the couch, incensed that the press is still connecting Lee Mari with Skeet. Mari's expression is one of semi-pained interest. Skeet then takes off his dark glasses and looks directly into the camera... "I miss her a lot." Reporter: "Are you serious?" Skeet walks away. Mari's bodyguard is about to jump out of his skin and quickly turns off the TV. Mari gets up from the couch, stops in front of Chulsu, then without a word leaves the room.
Cut to President Seo looking at a tabloid featuring frontpage photos of Mari and Skeet, the headline: "Son Ha-young Acknowledged His Relationship with Lee Mari!" As the camera pulls away from him, we see Seo is meeting with the older woman manager (Mari's personal assistant?). He proceeds to pull out the letter and scandalous photo from Mari's former mystery lover, handing the letter to the woman.Back at the home base restaurant in Seoul, the women are watching the late night news of Lee Mari in Japan, writing a book, etc. Yuri (the teenage type who lives there) has a high fever again. Tough Granny is nursing her... class ul GR: (to one woman) I told you to be careful of catching a cold!
W1: I know! I didn't do it because I didn't catch a cold!
GR: (angrily) Where were you last night?! Why did you let her stay in the store until so late?
W2: I'm sorry. I'm partly responsible for this, too.
W1: See?! It's not all because of me. (to GR) Even you went out for business.
W2: Do you want me to call Chulsu?
GR: (sharply) Why bother? Is this something new that we don't know? If she gets more fever, we are going to a hospital.
W1: What?! We're not going now? Why are you being stingy in this kind of situation. (Granny is leaving the room, stops in her tracks and glares at W1, who instantly shuts up)
W2: Poor girl... this could last for the rest of her life. Don't you think we should call Byung Joon? [is that the reporter?]
W1: Poor girl... (stroking her forehead)The reporter is late for work, trying to sneak in, but is caught by his supervisor... class ul Mgr: You late again? Again?
BJ: Oh, hi manager!
Mgr: You're late, what, 10 minutes? $100 bucks for the penalty!
BJ: You know, I have a story to tell you.
Mgr: Anyway, Son Ha-young is in Japan now.
BJ: What?
Mgr: There's an article that says someone witnessed the two were having a dinner at a restaurant at internet. [??] Minimum number of articles you are expecting?
BJ: Hmmmm.... I don't know... maybe five.
Mgr: Five articles for just a dinner?
BJ: Why not? Lee Mari Son Ha-young romantic rendezvous in Japan; Lee Mari's 100-day date record is breaking; Lee Mari Son Ha-young, getting married?; Son Ha-Young is breaking up with her because of his parents; Lee Mari Son Ha-Young have broken up! (All the reporters in unison... "Ohhhh!")Next we see Byung Joon typing away at home late into the night... class ul "Lee Mari, Son Ha-Young marriage impending marriage. Finally! Son Ha-Young has reserved a suite at a hotel. According to an interested person, the suite has the structure specially designed for the two people. It is known that the suite room where Son is staying is over $8400 a night." BJ falls to the side like he's having cardiac arrest at the price. "Lee Mari, how are you?!"

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
Isn't the guy playing Son Ha-young the same actor who is appearing in Terroir as Joy? Detest those incredibly controlling types. I was really hoping Mari would put him in his place. I'm not sure we actually saw the "boat" he was floating?
This one has just taken me over--I waited all week for Friday evening! LOL I love watching YJT--it's that combination of confidence and complete non-confidence, depending on the situation he's in. So far, Lee Mari is sadder, though. As you say, nchristi, he's grounded, but she's not. She'll crash harder than he will, I think. After all, that boyfriend left her years ago, but she hasn't gotten over him.
I was a bit confused by the lanterns. I didn't understand where they came from and where everyone else was. I think the Asian lantern festivals are exquisitely beautiful.
I don't remember some of the scenes you describe, so I guess there are some cuts.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
nchristi, I re-watched that scene you mentioned. I don't know what the word is, but it's spelled something like i-a-ni (ee-ah-ne). The first two letters are vowels. I can read the hangul letters (the consonants are easier and I'm better at printed hangul; written hangul can stump me), but I have very little vocabulary.
The first syllable can mean "stray (lost) child" according to my Korean-English Dictionary if the syllable is mi-ah; the Korean section is organized by the hangul letters, not romanized letters. Not sure if that's what is meant here; my dictionary had just the first two letters, not the third. That third letter could change the whole thing. But she was like a child in that scene.
I'll rewatch it, to make sure that he was writing vowels, not an 'm' as the first letter. The strokes for an 'm' are written differently than the circle 'h,' so I'm pretty sure it's the 'h.' In that case, I have no clue--can't find the hangul in my dictionary.

Thanks for the help with the hangul word Chulsu wrote on his notepad. "Stray (lost) child" sounds like a perfect fit, doesn't it? He seemed touched by her childlike sweetness and affection towards the deer.
As for Skeet's comment about 'floating a boat,' between the MySoju and SBS e-subs, a little extra something was implied. He has something planned for 'in front of the hotel.' My first guess was he's going to do something the press will have a hey-day over, like maybe proposing to her. But I don't think that would go over with his family, so it can't be that (especially since he can't get married before his two older brothers marry). I wonder if he's going to tip off a reporter to be there and Skeet will make it look as though Lee Mari has spent the night at the hotel with him or something like that. Maybe hoping to rope her into agreeing to marry him, since a scandal would ruin her career.
Even though the e-subs were ambiguous, I believe she broke up with Skeet at the restaurant. She certainly didn't say anything that could be taken in a positive light. Then when she was sitting with Chulsu in the middle of the lanterns, she said she broke up with her boyfriend. She also, it seemed to me, made a distinction between Skeet and her first love of long ago, the mystery guy who never came back with the vanilla ice cream.
Since Skeet is a major control freak, and since Mari isn't in the palm of his hand, I'm sure he's going to pull some stunt to force her to be with him.
