Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)

Interesting episode. I've thought from bits in past episodes that Pres Seo wants Mari. Not sure if he "loves" her, but he certainly wants her, beyond the fact that she's his meal ticket.

Chulsu has always been in a bind, but it's getting worse. Abandoned by mom, no money, sick sister, ghostwriting, rich girlfriend whom he doesn't love her (I think he has convinced himself that he does), now he's involved with Mari and all her baggage. I don't think he dislikes Mari at all, but he does dislike the situation he finds himself in.

I've liked watching Choi Ji woo for many years now, but have to say that this is the best I've seen her.

K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)

I kindof see Chulsu and Mari's relationship being one in which the lonely and needy has found a home with the caregiver. Chulsoo couldn't abandon his responsibilities as an older brother to his sister when his mother left them and now he can't abandon the needs that have come to the surface of Mari. The obstacle standing in the way of Chulsoo and his girlfriend is that she doesn't "Need" him as much as Mari does. Chulsoo is going to find fulfillment (relationally) when he can "take care of" a woman, no matter how much baggage and difficulties are encountered.

Episode 7 - Deleted Scenes

Woojin takes Lee Mari to a restaurant. Reveals he is the little boy who gave her the star. As WJ drives home, he takes a phone call... class ul WJ: Oh, Ha Young. Yeah, I met her... I don‛t want to give you all the details... The bet? It‛s you who should not forget what you bet on this one.Lee Mari arrives home, looks wistfully at the box of ornaments. Then she looks over at the strawberry cake and flashes back to Chulsu... class ul LM: I don‛t want anyone else except you!
CS: What do you mean by that?
LM: You can interpret it any way you like.
CS: (irritated) I‛m asking you, what are you saying?
LM: (snaps at him) It means that I like you! What else should it mean?
Back to reality, Lee Mari sighs and hangs her head, regretting that awkward moment.

After Chulsu hides in the bathroom, feels guilty about his relationship with Lee Mari, he tells her she is a fake person, he leaves. On campus, Eun-yung spots him and calls out to him. She smiles warmly. He can‛t do the same. EY accompanies CS to the office, which CS shares with the professor... class ul Prof: I didn‛t know you two knew each other. (to EY) So, I know your dad finished his new novel.
EY: Yes, he‛ll come see you at the beginning of next year.
Prof: (laughs) Yes, he always talks about coming, but he never comes. Oops, I‛m sorry. I am just too easy with my juniors! (turns to CS) So, you are going to get a job after all?
CS: Yes. I‛m really sorry.
Prof: You want me to ask people about it?
CS: No, thanks. I‛m doing it for myself. (Prof notices EY is staring at a copy of LM‛s book which Prof is obviously reading) Oh, did you read this?
EY: Ah! No, not really. [Reporter fessed up that CS was ghostwriter for this book]
Prof: A book written by a beautiful actress... (turns to CS) Ah, she was here the other day, wasn‛t she? She asked you something, right? (EY looks at CS, who glances back nervously)
CS: She asked for directions.
Prof: She‛s beautiful, right? (CS makes a slight sound) It‛s a pretty interesting book. I wrote a review for this one.
EY: You did? I should read that one. Professor, would you give a favorable criticism if my dad wrote it?
Prof: (chuckles) I‛m not sure he could do it, for he is having a hard time writing. I mean, it was lyrical. You know, a good book is a good book no matter who wrote it. (CS nervously nods his head in agreement) You know, a professor is involved with a ghostwriting issue which made me a little embarrassed. Ghostwriting is surely problematic. I mean, I do understand if it‛s for supporting one‛s living, but I still feel bitter about the society where people sell their soul and conscience as a writer.
CS: So, what will happen to him?
Prof: Maybe he wouldn‛t be able to stay here any longer.
Lee Mari‛s stylist, the older woman, is serving her tea... class ul Sty: You are disappointing me so badly. What is wrong with you these days? (LM is depressed and sullen) You disappeared all of a sudden and then kept fighting with President Suh. Then why are you coming back with that frowning face?
LM: It‛s not that big a deal.
Sty: Not a big deal? I‛ve known you for such a long time; since you went to junior high and learned the job here. How many years has it been? You never make this face if it‛s not a big deal.
LM: What do you think I am doing now?
Sty: What is going on?
LM: I don‛t know what I am doing. I don‛t know what I should do to live a real life. Someone said I was just a fake person, a shallow dream.
Sty: (indignant) Who said that? Do not hang out with such a guy!
LM: (sighs) What am I going to do? Maybe now I am serious about him. It feels so unfair.
Back at the university, Chulsu and Eun-yung are walking outside... class ul CS: Aren‛t you late for your flight?
EY: I can make it if I leave now. I am sorry. You must have felt uncomfortale when the professor talked about it in the room. You worked as a part-time ghostwriter in Japan for me. I made you do that for the trouble I made.
CS: That‛s what I should feel sorry for, not you.
EY: So you said you stayed with the person you wrote a book for? What was this person like? (CS is nervous and avoids looking at EY...) Are you two... still meeting?
CS: (looks at EY) Oh, we met a couple of times to discuss the book in Seoul, but it won‛t happen any more. (EY smiles and seems relieved)
EY: Ah, okay. I will wrap things up in Japan and come back to Korea soon.
CS: Really? What about your dissertation?
EY: I will write it here.
CS: I see....
EY: Oppa... (she takes his hand) I... Oppa, I really like you.
Meanwhile, Lee Mari comes back to her empty home. She sits and looks at Chulsu‛s jacket and bag he left behind... Chulsu returns to his room, he looks around and snaps his fingers... My bag! What am I going to do?

As Lee Mari sits there looking at Chulsu‛s bag, her phone rings... class ul LM: Hello
WJ: This is Jung Woo Jin. Sounds like you were waiting for some else‛s call. What have you been doing? (LM remains silent) Your book is really interesting. I was surprised to see the books mentioned were my favorites. I never imagined that we had a similar sensibility.
LM: (weakly) Ah, yes.
WJ: I‛d like to talk to you, if you don‛t mind.
LM: So, how was your business trip?
WJ: Holden is my favorite character.
LM: That‛s who you met in the business trip?
WJ: (puzzled) You know, Holden, the Catcher in the Rye?
LM: Oh, the book.
WJ: Your mind must have been somewhere else.
LM: Yes, I have something to think about now.
WJ: I always see you at the wrong moment, don‛t I? When I found out that you were seeing HaYoung, and last time you fell into the water, there was this guy who jumped in before I did. I hope I didn‛t come too late this time.
LM: What do you mean by that?
WJ: It is what it is. Anyway, it‛ll be good to have something to talk with you about next time we meet.

LM hangs up, looks over at CS‛s bag next to her... What do you want me to do by myself? She puts her head in her hands and looks as though she‛s crying.
[The next scene is LM reading at the studio and her former bodyguard asking her why she‛s so depressed...]

Chulsu goes to the hospital, sees his mother with Yuri, the two laughing together. He decides not to go in. His phone starts ringing. It is Mgr. Suh but CS doesn‛t pick up.

Reporter slurping down ramen in the office, is shocked by internet headlines: Top star, A, Suspicion of ghostwriting arising. A famous star, Miss A, in under suspicion of ghostwriting. A man is claiming to be the said ghostwriter.

At the same time, WooJin is reading the same screen in his office.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)

In checking out the TV listing for channel KSCI18/18.1, it shows this drama beginning at 9:45p, running for 1hr 15 min. No wonder I'm always missing more at the beginning than I expect! My dilemma during the week is always between the ending of the drama on KXLA or the beginning of this one, since they overlap.

Looking forward to tonight!

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)

Looks like curly carrot was right about Chulsu. Mari, too. I felt such pity for both of them tonight, but I think more so for Mari. She'll give him up, just as she did the doll all those years ago.

What interesting characters, all around. Really enjoyed tonight's episode. Just had to come here and say that! LOL But I'll have to think about it, so many things happened. I'm not sure about Woojin--does he really like her or is he pursuing her just to prove he can beat his cousin? Even though it's a small part so far, the stylist Lee Seung yeon is certainly interesting (Yang Hee kyung--she's been interesting in a lot of the things I've watched--did you see her in Super Rookie?). Pres Suh is scary--what will he do next (and his sister!)? After all, he caused this situation, in more ways than one--he commissioned the book, and then leaked the ghostwriting story. And the mother--a real piece of work, that one. I just loved those three aunties! All trying to help Yuri and Chulsu.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)

Good Morning Kdrama Family,

Hyena, I'm not sure about this guy, Woo Jin, either. I still don't know his motive in pursuing her. I know they have a sort of history from childhood, but that was childhood. You meet, you reminisce, you move on. Only in Kdrama do you stay in love, for twenty years, with someone you knew briefly at ten years old. I don't see any chemistry between these two. Could it only be competition between he and his cousin? I don't know, but I don't think so. He doesn't seem to want to harm her in any way, so we'll see what his reasons are for sticking around.

As far as I'm concerned, Chil Su's da man!! He's been there for her from the beginning and sometimes against his better judgement. He seems not to be able to help himself. Its all about protecting her. Sometimes you get to see how differently they approach a problem and its interesting when they butt heads.

I like the way she's way out there with her feelings. Its refreshing to see Choi Ji Woo play such a part. Plus she's gorgeous in this. The males in this are pretty good to look at too. emoticon

I like this drama.

Later emoticon

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)

So far, this was my favorite episode—especially the ending!

What a great device the writer used with the line in the sand (dirt, in this case!). Perfect for a romantic drama. Chulsu's mother drew that line, ending her love for him, sentencing him to an emotional prison that he neither could escape nor allow anyone else to enter. He used this later with Eun-yong (if I remember correctly), and she didn't cross his line. Now we come to Lee Mari. She's the only one to love Chulsu so sincerely, and who can understand him, that she fearlessly crosses the 'line,' entering his deeply personal, emotional forbidden zone. Once she did that, his walls of defense weren't just lowered, they fell in an implosion and he was helplessly driven to express his deep love for her at that moment.

These two actors/characters perfectly combine elements that are on the verge of spontaneous combustion. In this drama, Choi Ji Woo displays the most genuine innocence, playfulness, anger, emotional self-defense, and intuitive responses of any actor that comes to mind. Same with Yoo Ji Tae. I totally love how he plays certain little scenes, like when LM is on the phone with Woojin and he starts asking about Heathcliff. Even though CS is protecting LM by feeding her the necessary info, still he can't contain his resentment of another man sniffing around her. He mocks WJ with a couple looks he flashes and a few choice words. Then, of course, CS loses his confidence and decides to leave (with LM grabbing his wrist for a change).

Another favorite scene was when LM was reading The Little Prince, crying over the story. What an expression on Chulsu's face! Both the proud tutor seeing his student having finally opened and stepped over into a new world of knowledge and experience she didn't know existed. At the same time, his face showed the affection he had for the tenderhearted, sweet person Lee Mari truly is beneath her movie star exterior. Then there was the vacuuming. And who could forget the 'punishments' for not reading her book a day! (I'm glad he was writing Hangul and not English!
emoticon

These two characters are just so perfectly matched in their qualities. Each has an abundance of what the other is lacking, craves, and needs. What fun they have together when they're not fighting against nature! Each has an incredible intuitive strength to keep the other centered in their most vulnerable areas. So far, this is one of my very favorite drama couples.

Also, kudos to the actor playing President Suh, Sung Ji Roo (Seong Ji Ru). He's doing a great job in portraying the conflicting emotions this character is going through. I'm feeling the same confusion I'm seeing from him on the screen. It's hard to tell Suh's true feelings, though we know he's hurting and now he's doing destructive things.

Same for Yang Hee kyung. I agree, she's an excellent actor, too. (Yes, I did see her in Super Rookie! Probably the one and only time to see her cast in that sort of role! And how about Dalja's Spring? Another role out of the ordinary MIL stuff she usually gets cast as.)

Episode 8 - Deleted Scenes

Suh‛s sister is driving Jungha (Jungsu?) to his audition. He is worried about Mari... class ul YR: You like her so much? Because of her face? Her body?
JH: People say she‛s *****y, snobish and all, but they have no idea how she‛s been sweet to Eunsil and me. When my sister got married, she came to the wedding in person! And when Eunsil lost Mari‛s dress that had been borrowed, Mari handled all of it! There‛s always a reason why a manager likes his actor or actress!
YR: Definitely not professional.
JH: (exasperated) You can‛t always be professional, especially in this business! People are cursing, critics are criticizing, and fans are cheering. Then what about a manager? Just be on her side, under any circumstances. That‛s why you can‛t always be professional, I mean, there‛s got to be some emotion that comes and goes. (sighs) Given that, president Suh is too mean to her and so is my manager here (looks at Yerin.
YR: I will be on your side if you do the job well.
JH: (angrily) That‛s what I am talking about right now! It‛s got to be unconditional, unconditional!
Reporter (Byong Joon) rushes into a bathroom, gets down and looks under all the stall doors to make sure he‛s alone. On a john, he calls Chulsu... class ul BJ: Hey, I met reporters today and we are really in trouble, Chulsu. This could really be blowing up! You should be super careful, buddy. (CS is on campus as he takes BJ‛s call)
CS: Since when have you known this?
BJ: From day one, and you knew that I knew.
CS: Lee Mari... how is she doing?
BJ: She also heard what the reporters said today. Like, is the ghostwriting true? Or the issue is the talk of the nation, blah, blah, blah. She suddenly became as pale as a ghost and I really thought that she‛d fall down. [This is why CS coming running to LM‛s place and sees Woojin dropping her off.]
After the photo shoot where Lee Mari is so ‛intimate‛ with the famous male actor, as they leave the photo stage, Chulsu stops Mari... class ul CS: By the way, what kind of picture taking was that? Kissing and...
LM: (teasingly) It was the concept! Didn‛t we look great together or what? Everyone wanted us to be a couple.
CS: Yeah... you looked great, and I am leaving. (starts to leave...)
LM: But you have to be back early tonight. I‛ve got something to discuss with you.
CS: Discuss?
LM: It‛s really important. Are you coming, or what? (he is silent) We are friends, aren‛t we?
CS: All right. What about dinner?
LM: I will cook. What do you like? Pick up something special.
CS: Jabchae? (mixed dish of vermicelli, vegetables and sliced meat)
LM: Jabche? That‛s it?
CS: (proud of himself, grinning) You have to wash, chop, and fry. It won‛t be easy at all.
LM: So, it‛s for giving me a hard time, isn‛t it? All right. (he thinks he‛s won) (LM teasingly) Take care, honey.
CS: (he‛s the loser) That I am fed up with. See you later. (He‛s lost his smile and leaves)
Chulsu in the school library, he receives a text message from Eun Yong. Oppa, I‛m in Korea now. I came a bit earlier. Where are you now? (CS knows he has a problem now....)

Chulsu uncomfortably waits on campus for EunYong. She sees him, calls to him. He can barely muster up the tiniest of smiles. EY puts her arms around him, resting her head on his shoulder. Reluctantly, CS weakly embraces her.

In CS‛s apartment, EY convinces BJ to stay with them to eat. CS is stuck. While eating, BJ tries to convince EY that Lee Mari is not CS‛s type... class ul EY: She is not the type of woman oppa likes. Yeah, she‛s not your type.
CS: What are you talking about? (EY picks up on CS‛s interest in LM and changes the subject)
EY: How is Yuri?
CS: She‛s in the hospital.
EY: Then, how come you didn‛t tell me?
BJ: They say that she can get an operation in the States. But money always matters.
EY: Then after we eat, let‛s go to the hospital together.
CS: (cornered) Okay, let‛s do that. (EY sees his lack of enthusiasm)

I've been a lurker for quite sometime and I have to say that I really enjoy reading the posts here. They are so insightful and enriching. After having seen Star's Lover, Choi Ji Woo and Yoo Ji Tae have quickly become my favorite Korean couple. I thought their chemistry is superb especially in the latter episodes. It's sad that the ratings in Korea were low. They blamed on the storyline/characters for lacking its depth. Perhaps they should read the comments posted by y'all.
I have a question - why does the TV station delete some of the scenes?
Keep up the good work.
