Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
Hi, Elfie3! Welcome!
Scenes are deleted because of money--the station needs to run commercials to make money, so they cut scenes to run ads in the time frame they have (or make) available.
While this is a romantic comedy on the surface, I see dark underpinnings. Chulsu was abandoned--I think he hasn't come to terms with that (the emotional prison as nchristi says). Mari was abandoned in another way, and she seems to have reached a point where the life she's made is no longer giving her the emotional support she needs. Perhaps Korean viewers wanted a light comedy, perhaps there was some other drama on at the same time that viewers liked more. There aren't a lot of posters on this thread, so perhaps it's not doing all that well here in LA. Hard to tell. Not everyone likes the same thing. I am loving this one totally, and will get my own copy as soon as it becomes available.

K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
this drama has kept my interest all along...All of the actors have been perfectly cast. Interesting how all of the books that Chul Soo quoted from or gathered info from for the ghostwritten book appear to be foreign classics...I'm surprised a few korean classics were not included in the batch

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
We're happy you are enjoying your time here, Elfie3. Even happier that you've joined us and hope you will continue in discussing other dramas, too!
In addition to what Hyena explained about deleted scenes, there are some other aspects. First, the stations that delete scenes are the commercial stations, not the ones on cable or satellite. If viewers pay a subscription fee, the dramas in their package are unedited. So, I provide the deleted scenes for those viewers who do not have that type service.
Another big factor is that the running time of drama episodes in Korea is not the same as the standard here in the US. Our programming has historically been based on the hour and half-hour model—usually 22–24 minutes of program per half hour, the remainder used for commercial ads. Until very recently, Korean dramas had no commercial breaks at all and the length of each episode commonly ranges from 60–70-minutes. Trying to fit a 60-minute program into the typical American TV schedule requires three half-hour segments, a 90-minute time slot.
After having suffered through the merciless editing on our other SoCal station, I am very happy with SBS's time allotment for their prime time dramas. Even though my "deleted scenes" posts seem long, the actual scenes SBS deletes are of minimal impact to the story. The other local station sometimes deletes more minutes of drama than they show—literally. That's why so many of our members watch their favorite dramas on the internet.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
Thank you all for the explanation. I thought some of the scenes that were deleted are quite important, but in overall scheme of things they don't materially change the storyline. I finished watching this drama a while ago but I am still very much dwelling on many of the intimate scenes between LMR & KCS/CJW & YJT. Mari and Chul Soo characters are so complex yet very human (with all the flaws). Their personalities are so opposite but complement each other very well. There are so many scenes that just evoke my emotions in a way that I haven't felt from a drama in a long time.

I agree, Elfie3. Complex human beings. I had to watch it twice last night.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
hello, all, long time no talk to -- just had to say that this is one of the most powerful love stories I have enjoyed since Sad Love Story. Because it quickly consumed my thoughts, had to run out to buy (most disappointing 'cause subs awful unless one understand's storyline). Can't wait to purchase DVD. Already have the beautiful OST! (of course). The lovely songs take me right back to my favorite scenes. Luv, luv, luv it!!!
Choi Woo is an extraordinarily beautiful actress and Ji Tae (I immediately adored, but knew nothing of, now a fan) have electrifying chemistry, both "SUPERB" in their roles. Actually, I believe every single person cast in the drama is outstanding. Fabulous fashions, great sets, locations, this purely wonderful script drew me in, captured my heart, still occupies my thoughts long after viewing.
Ok, that said, now I have to go back to page 1 to read all your comments.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
Episode 9 - Deleted Scenes
EunYong waits for Chul-so on the rooftop. Inside, she puts her arms around him, he pulls her arms away and says he can‛t see her anymore. [commercial break...]
Cut to Lee Mari alone in her hotel room, reading about herself on the internet. Cut back to CS and EY talking in his room. EY sits on the bed, CS on a chair, facing each other ... class ul EY: Do you like Lee Mari? (CS looks down) Do you like that person? (He still looks away, is silent. EY begins to cry, talks calmly) You‛re like an idiot. That person didn‛t say she liked you. She doesn‛t like you. (CS looks in EY‛s eyes, seeing the great pain she‛s in)
CS: (quietly) What are you talking about?
EY: I met with Lee Mari. (CS is surprised but hides his reaction)
CS: I‛ve been really very bad to you... to make you do something like that. (puts his face in his hands) This is just not right.
EY: Did she tell you to dump me?
CS: No, that is not it. There is nothing between us.
EY: "Us"? (she takes his hands in hers) Oppa. That person, she‛s Lee Mari. She‛s Lee Mari! You are just a ghostwriter for her... She is a celebrity.
CS: I know.
EY: You may have felt hurt and said suffering this together. But that‛s not real.
CS: I thought it wasn‛t real either... but she keeps crossing the line that I drew. Every time I drew the line, she keeps crossing it. But then I can‛t push her back. I don‛t want to see her being hurt, I worry about her... and I get upset. This is the firs time... I‛ve never experienced this before, I mean I don‛t think anything. I‛ve always thought only.
EY: So she crossed the line you drew? (CS hangs his head, EY cries...) This is unfair. This is too much! (she gets down on her knees before him) This can‛t be happening!
CS: I‛m sorry.... (EY clings onto his sleeve and cries more)
EY: This is too unfair...The bodyguard (Jangha/Jangsu?) is in the office rehearsing his English lines with YaeRin (sp?) and the girl assistant... class ul Girl: His role... wasn‛t it under the condition that Mari is in that movie? Is that audition still on?
JR: Even if the start is like this, a promise is a promise. Why? Are you worried?
JH: No way... I already told you that I don‛t like this buttery role. What international lawyer, my a**.
JR: If you don‛t do this right, I won‛t forgive you. Don‛t make this company crumble away just by a single celebrity‛s crisis.
JH: If you don‛t forgive, what are you going to do?
JR: You‛re curious of what will happen? (Byung Joon walks in)
BJ: You all here? Oh... hi, YaeRin. She‛s not here, right? Someone just told me that Mari‛s car has arrived in the parking lot. (everyone runs out; BJ blocks the door so Yaerin can‛t leave...) YaeRin, wait! (she glares at him) I‛m so embarrassed as you stare at me like that. (he giggles)
YR: What are you doing now?
BJ: Yaerin-shi... can you please close your eyes? (He pulls a large, heart-shaped, engraved silver box out of his bag. It‛s full of folded paper cranes...) I made them for you. (she gives a sigh of disgust, flips the hinged lid closed and walks out the door)
BJ: (to self) Aiieesh... I should have made 1000 more...

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
Hi, Star1. Glad to see you back and am looking forward to your comments!
Well, this is a really heartrending drama, that's for sure. I'm rooting for Lee Mari, of course, but in watching this episode I had to do some serious thinking about Eun Yong. She has really been put through the wringer. If any of us were in her shoes, I dare say we'd be mucho upset! They fall in love (though he tells her in the deleted scene that it was all cerebral for him. It is with Lee Mari that he experiences the emotions of love.). CS dumps EY unexpectedly, cruelly, and without explanation by drawing his famous line in the dirt and telling her not to cross it. Just as his mother did to him.
Then CS decides to go back to EY after some years have passed. He is the one who starts it all up again with EY, promising her this time it is real, that he will never leave her. Now he dumps her again, telling her it wasn't real, and that he can't be with her because he feels something very special with Lee Mari.
Okay, I'm not one to have somebody commit to someone they don't want to be with. I just feel sorry for EY because she's been to hell and back, all because CS didn't know what he really felt, but now he's got it all straight. At least this time, he is trying to communicate fully with EY and to be kind to her—since her deep pain is all because of him and his vacillating behavior.
Chul-so's character reminds me of the main guy in "Lovers." Seemingly all together, strong male type but finding himself walking on thin ice that seems to be rapidly (and frequently) cracking beneath his feet. This is all a strange, new world to these guys. Logic has nothing to do with emotion. They're in a world they cannot control in the way they have always done in all other parts of their lives. It's fun to watch these women introduce their men to a different world that will fulfill them. And, of course, these guys are able to create a secure world for those women.
Good drama...

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
nchristi yes, very good drama.
But ya know, I just can't feel sorry for EY. Seems like she's always forcing her appearances, too clingy never giving him space. Plus, if I recall (at least from the horrible sub'd dvd I purch'd) CS just went back to her to return money she had given him (when he already had feelings for Lee Mari), then later on when he suggested he would "try" to be there for her I believe he was meaning to restore their friendship to see if feelings for Lee Mari would vanish. However, EY began calling, showing up 'round every corner, letting people think they were an actual couple while on the other hand CS simply drifted along, neither denying nor acknowledging. I think CS saw EY as a comfortable old friend (almost sisterly), someone he could exchange ideas with and share an understanding of his teaching and publishing goals given her parents academic/publishing backgrounds.
Can you tell me which episode (if you recall nchristi covers bit about his mom drawing a line? Is this something he told EY or did it actually show his mother?
Interesting aspect to me is agent XI who claims creation of Lee Mari's success. He appears to harbor feelings much deeper than business relationship.
Been a while since I enjoyed such a wonderful cast, script and soundtrack -- right now there are three dramas on my agenda . Don't you just love SBS?!!!
Interesting thing about this drama as person remarked earlier, sometimes you just want to go back and rewatch the episode. Had to find DVD because couldn't stand waiting a whole wk just to see one more ep. This story with its' great cast just gets richer and richer as it progresses. Thanks to the author!!! (Feel much same re My Precious You since most ep's cover way too much of previously run ep. DVD is out but not w Engl subs)
Stay healthy everybody
