Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
star1, Chulsu's mother draws the line in the first episode, in the very beginning. It's when she leaves Chulsu and his sister at the seashore.
I feel bad for Eun yong, but not totally. It seems to me that she has done most of the "chasing," that he has just accepted that she liked him. That certainly does not release him from responsibility, however. Like nchristi says, he controlled that relationship cerebrally, and had no real emotional attachment to EY. Even the first scene, he giving her piano lessons, it seemed to me that she moved in on him, and he just accepted it, until he realized she was out of his class, and drew the line. Still, he has been giving her conflicting signs, and for that reason I do feel sympathy for her. Thinking about many of their scenes together, she certainly hasn't understood him--paying for his tuition, for example, especially since they were no longer seeing each other.
His relationship with Mari won't be any smoother. He now has an emotional attachment to her, but she's used to flying. That will be very difficult for him to handle, I think.
I know I could watch this on mysoju, but I refuse. I wait until Friday night--it's really difficult! But I manage it. LOL

Can you tell me which episode (if you recall nchristi) covers bit about his mom drawing a line? Is this something he told EY or did it actually show his mother? It is at the beginning of Episode 1, just a few scenes into it. Chulsu is a young boy, his sister on his back, when the mother decides to take off for 'greener pastures.' CS is following her, she stops and literally draws a line in the dirt, telling him not to cross it. She gives him a crisp bill of money and tells him to buy himself some books. With that she turns and leaves, CS's little heart is breaking, he becomes hysterical but is frozen in his obedience in not crossing the line she has drawn. After that he reads many books, waiting for his mother to return. She never does.
Edit: Sorry, hyena. When I started writing, you hadn't answered. Well, you know how that goes... LOL!

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
nchristi, your posts are always interesting--not a problem!
Actually, when I was writing my answer, I was mulling over whether Chulsu and Mari were at the same orphanage or school or whatever it was. That's not clear to me. We've figured out that Woo jin was the boy who saw Mari give away the doll, but did he live there? I thought some of the dialog between them as adults indicated that he was visiting the school at the time. If he's so wealthy, can't see that he would have been living there. The only other boy I remember is the one who took food away from Mari--was that Chulsu? Woo jin? Well, I'm confused. Perhaps when I get my copy (LOL), it will be clearer.

hyena and nchristi thank you both. It figures . . . I missed the first (possibly 2d) eps on TV and when I purchased dvd I went straight to current running ep to get a fix on the poor subs. Now I need to go back to square one. I have learned my lesson.
Thanks again.

Hyena,
Woo Jin didn't live at the orphanage but his grandpa either owned the orphanage or used to provide some financial assistance for the orphanage. The drama is also implied that Woo Jin visited Mari at the orphanage regularly for a year, then he moved to the U.S. After that they lost contact until their adulthood.

K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
@hyena
KCS and LMR used to live in the same area and probably played in the same beach but no, they did not live in the same orphanage. KCS and his sister after being abandoned by their mother were raised by the 3 "aunties" (back-up singers of the band where the lead singer was his mom) while LMR was brought to the orphange managed by her grandmother after her parents died in a sea accident. Woo Jin's grandfather was a doctor who would visit the orphanage and he would bring along Woo Jin on his visits. Woo Jin eventually went to the states presumably with his parents and grew up there. I think Woo Jin And LMR met for only once or twice maybe during activities held by the orphanage and the guest was his grandfather. I say this because she does not have a memory of him and had to be reminded of that time where he gave her a star. As to KCS and LMR, I think they never formally met in childhood...it was just implied that they may have met randomly at play once but the conditions in their lives even though how different would lead to their meeting and "merging"

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
My take on the boy at the orphanage who took the food away from Mari was he was only a bully there. I think we saw that scene just as one of several examples to show us how Mari was picked on by everyone until she learned how to act in ways that made others like her. That was the beginning of her 'acting' career and of living a life—not for herself—but to win the approval of everyone around her.
Chulso always lived with the Aunties (they and his mother were all in the same singing act). His mother lived with them, too, and when she ran off with their money, she also left behind her two kids—Chulso and Yuri. The older woman has been his mother figure since bio-mom ran off to escape the loan sharks—or whomever it was that she owed.
Another thing that has puzzled me from the beginning of Episode 1 is the opening narration talking about the children by the sea, how they were destined to love, and so forth. The "sea" connection between Chulsu and Mari is that she lived near the sea, too. Remember how she was standing on the shore watching her parents sail by in the boat? That was the last time she saw them, as a sudden storm at sea came up and they never returned. Anyway, that opening narrative, the story telling, sounds like Chulsu's voice. I've always had the feeling that somehow we will see where that's coming from. Perhaps at the very end this story telling will be tied up neatly with his being with Lee Mari, or telling her the story.... Something like that.

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
Thanks, everyone! I figured the boy who took Mari's food was a bully, too, but because both KCS and LMR were at the seashore, it seemed that they must have met. If the story doesn't tie up that bit of info at the end, it will have been useless.
Well, episode 10 was certainly riveting. I was pleased that Mari defied Pres Seo, but it will probably come back to bite her. Still, it seems that she needs to move on, get away from his intensely controlling universe.
Had to laugh, though. Mari travels to the hospital in a car, denoting some distance. Chulsu runs to the hospital. Guess he's a marathoner!! LOL I know, distances are relative in these dramas. She was in a car so she wouldn't be recognized. And, as my Korean friend says, South Korea is a small country--doesn't take long to get anyplace (well, nothing is that far from any place else).
Can't imagine how Chulsu is going to get her out of the hospital with all those reporters on their tail. She's got on a hospital gown (hopefully over her clothes!!), he doesn't have a car. I don't want a spoiler, so I'm going to have to tough it out.

Hyena.
I saw Chul Su leaving the hospital room ...rushing through the reporters. He looked pretty mad and I thought he was under the impression that it was all a stunt and she was in on it.
One more bump in the road?????

Re: K-Drama: 스타의 연인 (Celebrity Lover/Star's Lover)
I'll have to watch it again. I didn't have that impression when I watched it for the first time, last night. I thought he was made at the reporters, and probably Pres Suh, but not her. He does get mad at her, though, but he took her hand, so he's in protect mode. Whatever he has to do to protect her. I also thought that he knew the whole thing had been set up by Pres Suh--he doesn't trust him at all, and he's wanted Mari to leave Suh.
This was ep 10, so we've got a long way to go--lots of twists and turns and misunderstandings, I imagine. This one is really staying with me--the two main actors are so good in their characters.
