Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

Episode 31-A (Mon) class ul DP walks past the black car with Boksil inside. He goes to her apartment, banging on door, demanding to talk with her. The real estate man arrives with a new renter; has no info on Boksil's whereabouts.

Gramps hears from a neighborhood guy (real estate?) that Boksil has moved and sold her apartment. He is furious and yells at Daepung, "What have you done?!" DP has no answers and takes no responsibility for Boksil's disappearance. Gramps, in his fury, yells at DP to go out and find her! He has one week. If he doesn't find her in one week, he has to leave the family!

DP goes to his clinic. He looks sadly at Boksil's desk, calls her, leaves a message in his trademark angry way: Come back while I'm still nice! The whole family is upset. I love you, Nurse Kim.

Sujin is late for work, hurries by the pharmacy. Jinpung steps outside and calls to her. He acts angry that she has ignored him, but is only teasing her. She blushes and asks if she can call him at lunch? He plays dumb... "What for?" Then smiles and warmly tells her to call him after she's eaten a nice lunch.

Mipung and Suhui walking together. He is sad about Boksil. She complains about the family being upset about Boksil. Who is Boksil to be so important, anyway? Mipung gets angry with her badmouthing Boksil and threatens to adopt Hana and kick Suhui out! Then she complains about her job at the handicraft shop and would rather be selling beer (bar job?), upsetting Mipung even further.

Back at the clinic, there is mayhem—kids running around, no nurse to collect the money and dispense the meds. DP is going nuts without Boksi running the office.

At home, Mom and Dad have DP on his knees before them, asking what happened. DP tells them they had an argument, Boksil has a bad temper, that's why she's gone. Dad doesn't buy that. He tells DP that if he doesn't find Boksil in one week (as Gramps ordered), he won't let him stay at home, either.

DP leaves the room. Mom tells Dad she is upset with Boksil for leaving without saying good-bye to them. She doesn't blame Boksil for being angry with DP, but the elders didn't do anything to her. She was like part of the family and shouldn't have left without a word.

Sujin comes home very late from work. As she runs by the pharmacy, Jinpung comes out to see her. He tells her to go on home, but she wants to go somewhere. Where? At this late hour? Next, they are walking in a playground/park. JP says this is dangerous... thugs and hoodlums. He says he doesn't know how to fight, then laughs. He loves to tease her.

Next they are sitting on some stairs in the park, eating Pringles and beer. Sujin says she can do something funny. She stuffs a small stack (3-4) Pringles into her mouth all at once. "I'm awesome, aren't I?" Then she starts laughing and begins slightly choking on them. "That's nothing, I can do it, too," says JP. He takes a stack about 2-3 times higher than hers and stuffs them all into his cavernous mouth! Don't compete with me, he tells her. Then laughs.

Shoulder to shoulder, he looks at her face. She gets nervous at his prolonged stare. "Now that I look at you, you're really ugly." She is deflated and says she knows. She has droopy eyes, a pointed chin, and a crooked nose. He asks what happened to her nose. She sadly tells him that she got hit. JP wants to know more. When she was 10 (Brutus was 15), their father moved the family to the US. He had been an "ordinary office worker" in Korea but something went wrong. In the States, he drank every day and was abusive. One night while she was doing her homework, he hit her in the face with his fist. Blood was everywhere, ruining her homework. She didn't tell her mother (who was out working a couple of jobs), just withstood the pain and re-did her homework. She didn't know why her father had punched her in the face that night. By the time her mother found out and took her to a hospital, the nose had already re-set in the crooked position.

Jinpung has tears in his eyes hearing this cruel story. He wants to see her nose again. He gently takes her face in his hands and tells her it doesn't look bad. Sujin is uncomfortable with him being so close. JP then very lightly kisses her on her nose, then on her lips as they both stare into one another's eyes. JP kisses her lips again, this time both of them closing their eyes. [This was one of the best 'first kiss' scenes ever. Both are terrific actors and it was very tender and touching.]

They walk home, hand in hand. He wants to walk her all the way home but she says 'no, Brutus is home now.' As they part, neither one wants to let go of the other's hand. Sujin hurries home, her heart ablaze with feelings for Jinpung. He feels the same, face aglow.

Sujin tries to sneak into the house but Brutus comes out of the kids' room and catches her. He asks where she's been this late? Defensively, she tells him she was out with 'someone.' What 'someone'? 'Just someone.' She brushes past him and into the kids' room to check on them. Sitting on one of the beds, she is giggling to herself about Jinpung. Brutus opens the door. "Why are you laughing?" She scurries past him to wash up and go to bed. He stands there, giving her a look. He knows something is up.

Back in front of the pharmacy, Jinpung takes one last glance down the alley where he last saw Sujin tonight. He, too, can barely keep his feet on the ground.

I just love Jinpung's gentle nature. When Sujin told him about being punched by her father you could see that Jinpung was in pain for her. These two are such a great couple. It's like Sujin brings out the best in Jinpung's personality and he is her knight come to rescue her. Love them.

Jinpung wants to give Sujin the childhood he knows she missed.

I think there isn't a character on this show that I really dislike. I like Hana's mom now and I really like Miran (it took me a bit to warm up to her)...

I have agree with you. I remember you said it would get better and I didn't believe you. Well, I'm a believer now. It's now already # 2 of my all-time greatest dramas.

Eunji: She is so cute, and I just love her facial expressions. And how she finessed SeonPung into admitting he liked Boksil. I laughed so hard, my family wondered what happened.

Boksil: I hadn't expected her to be one of those runaway rich girls.

Jinpung/Sujin: I thought the interaction between SeonPung and Eunji was great, but these two are even better. So innocent and tender. Sujin is giving Eunji a run for the money with her facial expressions.

I'm really loving this drama.

Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

Episode 31-B (Tues) class ul Yeongdal is leaving for work the next morning. Ice Mom isn't sending him off, so he goes to find her. IM is deeply depressed, blankly staring... still in bed. He asks what she's doing today, suggesting she should go shopping or get a massage. She thinks it's all pointless.... unless she was doing it with Eunji.

At the office, Seonpung is unshaven, having come directly from a 3-day assignment. Yeongdal sends him home to Eunji, since they are newlyweds. YD mutters under his breath that Eunji could at least visit her mother. SP hears and asks is something wrong with Ice Mom, which YD denies.

At home, SP and EJ are happily playing around, glad to see one another. He asks if anything is new. She tells him about Boksil. SP is really upset about her quitting her job and moving away. He runs out to the courtyard, seeking confirmation from Mom, then angrily off to the clinic to confront Daepung. Eunji can't believe SP cares so much about Boksil, to leave her and run off to the clinic!

DP is sitting, depressed, in his office alone. SP is upset with him but DP doesn't want to hear any of it. He's sick and tired of the whole family 'Boksil this, Boksil that.' Besides that, all his patients want Boksil, too. DP leaves the clinic, SP chasing after him and stopping him.

Eunji, in the background sees and overhears their conversation, Seonpung angrily getting on DP's case about his mistreatment of Boksil and praising Boksil as one of the few really nice, sincere people in this world. "If you can't find her, I won't let you be at peace," he threatens Daepung. SP storms off, saying he will find Boksil. EJ is wondering about the relationship between her husband and Boksil.

After dark, SP finally comes home, EJ waiting for him in the courtyard. She asks where he's been. He answers that he just went for a walk...

Gwangho at Yeongdal's home, drinking together, half drunk already. YD wants GH to call SP and EJ to come over (secretly for Ice Mom's sake). GH doesn't want to bother them because they're 'newlyweds.' They continue drinking—and feeding each other snacks! LOL! (The love affair of the century) GH comments that YD can tolerate more liquor than he used to. YD explains he has nothing else to do since Eunji married and left. He drinks himself to sleep and Ice Mom takes sleeping pills. That's their life every night these days. He shares that IM is very depressed and stays in bed day and night. They continue drinking until YD is nearly passed out and GH stumbles to the bathroom. He accidentally goes into IceMom's bedroom instead but sees her and excuses himself (she remains sleeping). He goes back to the front room and tells YD to go to bed, he's leaving. GH takes note of the miserable condition both Ice Mom and YD are in.

In their room, Eunji has prepared a candlelit table with wine and fruit. She has a plan to loosen his tongue and grill him about his feelings for Boksil, under the guise of both of them telling the other about their pasts. She fesses up that she liked a kid in the second grade. 'Don't you have anything to tell me, SP?' "No." So she asks him directly about Boksil. Half-buzzed, he tells her he liked Boksil. At first she was just a nurse but then became a friend and sister. He flashes back to three years ago when he would come home late and Boksil would prepare something for him to eat. Other times she would always be crying over Daepung and he felt sorry for her. Smoke is coming from Eunji's ears as she's hearing more and more. SP doesn't notice, since he's always lost in the literalness of his thoughts and memories. 'Back then it was Boksil and I and the moon. She was such a beautiful person...'

Suddenly, SP comes back to reality of the furious Eunji across the table! She reads him the riot act, starts beating him with a pillow and storms out—on her way home to her parents. He chases after her... both in their pajamas. She should have listened to her parents... I was too young to marry, etc.

At the same time, Gwangho is coming home from drinking with Yeongdal and intercepts them. EJ goes crying to him, saying she's been tricked into this marriage. Dad insists they both go home and stop embarrassing themselves out in public in their PJs!

At home, EJ goes storming into her room. In the courtyard, Dad asks SP what happened. 'I confessed to EJ that I had a crush on Boksil.' Is that true? Yes. Dad starts kicking SP, calling him an idiot for telling his wife that.

The next morning Daepung walks outside the family room like a lone coyote, watching the whole family eating inside. He isn't allowed in until he finds Boksil. He can't believe it. He appeals to each, but everyone is on Boksil's side and ignores his complaints and appeals. DP then starts badmouthing Boksil, 'who is she? she's not even family? blah blah blah. Gramps looks at Dad and says 'It's too loud. Go throw some salt out there' (salt gets rid of bad luck or the ill omen a troublesome person brings).

DP angrily leaves, unable to believe his family means it and that they just aren't giving him a bad time. He stomps into his office and punches in Boksil's number, already yelling at her before there is any connection! Then a recording comes on saying this number is now disconnected.

Daepung leaves to look everywhere for Boksil. He calls her friends or associates, even the Nurses' Association trying to find her. No luck. He goes to all the shops she used to frequent. No Boksil. He rushes up to a food stand where he sees her. Wrong. Just a girl with permed hair like Boksil's.

He comes across a flyer offering $1000 for a lost poodle. It seems like an eye opener to him that people are willing to give $1000 reward for a pet but he has so completely viewed Boksil as unworthy of anything.

Some days pass by (4 suit/tie changes), and we see him visiting the gravesite of Boksil's mother. It seems he is visiting every single place he has ever gone with her, looking for her. On the memorial table, he has previously taped three Post-Its: "Come back when I tell you to!"; "I'll raise your pay, so please come back"; "Boksil, it's all my fault. Please come back." Today he tapes a picture of himself and Boksil, happily smiling in the office. It begins to rain; he tries to cover the notes and photo with his hands. He flashes back to many of the happy times with her.

The whole situation hits him full force. He wanders around in the rain, ending up eating some snacks at a street stand, crying as he remembers doing the same with Boksil.

At the clinic, DP is deeply depressed and generally unkempt looking. He dejectedly walks down the stairs and posts a sign: "Nurse wanted."

Cut to a country mansion. In a lavish bedroom, Boksil sits before her vanity, staring sadly, aimlessly....

Wow. I was completely caught off-guard at what Boksil really is after seeing tonight's last scene.

Boksil aka Dr. Jennifer Kim, neurosurgeon. No wonder her dad was so upset when his aide told him she had been working like a servant to a dysfunctional family and as a nurse to no-name neighborhood doctor.

I would not characterize the Pine Pharmacy family as dysfunctional.

They have some issues (like all families), but on the whole they are loving and non-abusive. Mom whacking her four grown sons doesn't qualify as an abuser. They have made a place for Miran, Hana, Hana's mom and have mentored Brutus and son. Two of the sons have formed loving relationships and Mipung has certainly shown a very considerate and protective relationship with Hana and her mom.

They did exploit Boksil (but Neurosugeon Kim was obviously in a state were she wanted to be victimized and punished and invited such treatment -- does she feel responsible for her mom's death because she couldn't save her?) I also think the family wants Boksil back not just becuase of her forced labor, but because they truely miss her and have come to regard her as a member of the family.

Can't see how the Mipung -Hana-Hana's mom situation can be resloved without heartbreak for Mipung. The father will show up in a year and a half and will reclaim custody of his daughter. Since Hana's mother abandoned her child it is hard to see how she could successfully gain custody over the real father's rights. So Mipung will be older and wiser and, I hope, ready for a mature relationship of his own.

Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

Dysfunctional is an interesting term. dys - Medtalk prefix Greek; abnormal, bad, impaired, mis-, not good, difficult, nonfunctional

In psychological terms in the US, it describes a rather standardized set of collective and individual behaviors and the results therefrom within a 'family.' Generally, it doesn't mean they do not (or cannot) function as a family—it describes how they function both as individuals and as a family. There are greater and lesser degrees of dysfunctionality.

When I step back and look objectively at the PineSol family, I find it a little difficult to assess them as average ('normal'). When the assistant to Boksil's father described the PineSols and their extended family, it was the investigator's compiled assessment from observation and interviewing individuals in the neighborhood. Whether or not it had the investigator's 'spin,' it contained the kernel of truth about each member: Mom is violent; Dad is the neighborhood alcoholic; JP is unmarried at 40, DP sees others as objects to be used, a juvenile, narcissistic bully; SP is a childlike man; Mipung isn't fully hatched yet, but is uncommonly devoted to a baby and activities traditionally within the female realm and frowned upon within the male realm.

The common theme seems to be that we have four adult men whom Mom refuses to wean. She keeps them 'children' by her violence and their fear of her displeasure. Dad's no help as a father. He cares mostly about being free to drink and do whatever he wants with the least disturbance attainable. (My favorite encapsulation of his personality goes back to when Eunji gave him the case of orange drink that he selfishly kept hidden away in his room so that he wouldn't have to share with anyone else, yet he rudely would drink them in front of others.) Gramps is the rudder that keeps the family headed in the right direction. He has a certain extended generosity and care for other people that Mom and Dad lack.

This is a contrived family of characters that gives the writer a very broad canvas on which to paint the storylines. That's the whole point. We wouldn't have the creatively funny, poignant, sad, thoroughly entertaining drama without this cast of diverse, seriously flawed, and whacky characters.

I think there is a lot of love in the foundation of this whacky family. Mom's sons are too old for her to be hitting on them but I think she loves them very much. They obviously love her too and don't hold the 'beatings' against her...

Also, Boksil, even though she was hiding out, seemed very much attached to this family. She saw the love they have for each other and how comfortable they are together. She didn't have that with her father and sister. There's warmth in the Pharmacy family...

I just love watching how happy Sujin is with Jinpung. She always has such a big smile on her face when she's been with him. What a sweet adorable couple they are...
