Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

Looks like this is swinging back to the comedic side again. It’s still a good drama, but I prefer comedy.
The writers sure played the stereotypical mother role to the hilt with this one. Jinpung’s mother could teach a 3 yr old how to throw a tantrum. That was something. And trying to play every trick she could think of to make her son feel guilty… I guess there’s a big culture gap, or they really overplay the mom’s hold on their kids. If my mom objected to the woman I wanted to marry for no good (or selfish) reason, I know I would (politely) tell her she’s not marrying her and if she didn’t like it, Too bad. But then, I guess I’m a BAD son.
I do have some trouble picturing Sujin as a successful lawyer. She seems so meek and humble. Not exactly traits I expect in a lawyer. I hate to think of how she’ll be treated by her MIL when she moves in. Jinpung will have another full time job running interference.
And I’m still enjoying Eunji a lot. I wonder if all the facial contortions are called for in the script, or it’s her interpretation of the role.
Icemom is still doing her usual fantastic job in doing her role. Actually all the actors and actress are doing a great job.

Well, two down and one to go, according to the family. I guess they’re setting us up to exclude a MiPung/Shuhui pairing. Too many difficulties with that.
Miran/Bruce… Maybe. Miran just doesn’t seem the motherly type though. Bruce’s kid’s are scared of her.
Well, let’s see how Daepung finally catches Boksil (or vice-versa). Jennifer looked fantastic at the wedding. Wow! She really has a nice figure.
Looking forward to more shenanigans with DP/Boksil/Dad. I guess Boksil’s sister is just a filler, unless they will be using her soon. I like her better than Boksil at this point. She seems nicer and more caring. She’s also very attractive. Lot’s of eye candy for us males in this drama… Maybe that’s one of the reasons I’m enjoying it so much.

What does Bokshil's sister do? Is she a Dr.?

I had to laugh at icemom on the phone with the handyman. Her voice quivered while begging him to come change the light bulb. She's good.

I remember when this first started. Sujin seemed very confident and in control. Once she found out her SIL was ill and going to die, Sujin totally changed. She realized she wasn't so tough after all and that life was fragile. It was very hard for her to lose Hyerim.

When mom went on and on how she sacrificed her life for Jinpung, I wanted someone to tell her that ALL mother's do that!

Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

Finally able to catch up on this past week's episodes, especially #46 (Wed/Thur).

Loved how extra considerate JP's mother was towards Sujin. She was so kind and sweet when they first had tea together in Mom's room. Then the lunch spread for Sujin (SJ, Mom, & Miran) was HUGE! All the best foods. Kudos to Mom for being first class in accepting Sujin so wonderfully as her daughter-in-law. emoticon

Jennifer certainly is ultra-cold towards her father. I felt sorry for him when she told him she was leaving Korea, not denying his direct question if it was because of him. She doesn't even notice (or if she did, didn't care) that he suddenly had pain. Miyeon (other daughter) enters to see her dad in agony. Jennifer has gone merrily on her way to work.

Jennifer's dad asks DP to live with him for three weeks to develop a paper on pediatric neurology at a big Jeju-do conference. Those two crack me up! They make the best couple out of all of the pairings in this drama! Both actors have great timing and ability to play off the other in the funniest way. Dad's comment to DP seems to indicate he (Dad) has a terminal illness. I hope not. So sad to have such estranged relations between father and daughter.

Shopping with Brutus! So funny. Looked like Prim and Proper Jinpung was so embarrassed that he begins hyperventilating when Brutus is holding up the sexy lingerie and yelling for the saleslady. LOL!

Jinpung gives his mother the diamond ring he had promised as a child. Beautiful moment between them. Beautiful ring, understated in its timeless simplicity.

Sujin dreams of Hyerim sending her off to marriage with her blessing. HR frees Sujin of her guilt about leaving the children behind with Brutus.

The Wedding - Great wedding scenes. I really liked this one (we've seen so many). The brothers singing the "nuptial song" was perfect, too. The three brothers in shades and 'gettin' down' to the music was good!

One question, though. Gramps tells another guy that the 'one in the middle' (DP) is the only one who isn't married. What about Mipung? Does Gramps consider him 'married' or betrothed to Suhui?

Jennifer shows up. Tells DP she's leaving and this is 'good-bye.' He is stunned.

If it's not a mistake in writing/subtitling, then my guess is Gramps doesn't consider Mipung eligible to get married because he's both too young and hasn't finished school. Whereas, the 3 older brothers are already in their 30's.

Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

Thanks, Dunedan... that makes sense.

Episode 47-A (Mon)

The wedding's over, Mom and Miran are cleaning up all the food, Gramps is complaining to his myriad of relatives for not staying over at his house at least the first night after the wedding.

Dad has Daepung in his room on his knees and asks when he is going to be moving out! DP is offended that "his" room will be taken by the newlyweds. After all, why should they get it?! It's all a conspiracy... It's Sujin's fault for asking to live with JP's family... it's Mom's fault because she was mean to Sujin before they got married and SJ only wants to live there because she's afraid of Mom. The Universe (as usual) is aligned against him personally and picking on him. Well, one more reason for DP to move in with Jennifer's dad, though that idea doesn't seem to have connected up in DP's mind, yet.

The Honeymoon... Sujin spends hours looking out the window at the ocean she hasn't seen in 5 years. JP is so funny. This actor can really turn on the funny faces, twitches, and the like. He's super patient, desperately wanting to get her into bed. She wants to go for a walk on the beach. Okay. Two hours later (11:30p) they've returned and she's still staring out at the sea. Finally, JP has had enough! He yells at her that he's been waiting 40 years for this night, who cares if she's been waiting only 5 years to see the ocean! LOL! He grabs her and carries her to the bed. Fadeout....

At the hospital the next day, DP learns from nurses that Jennifer has resigned and will be going to the States. He calls her sister and they meet on the roof. (Looks like Jennifer's sister is also a doctor.) She tells him Jennifer has been accepted in an 'exchange professor' program at her former university. DP starts complaining about why they aren't stopping her. What does her father say about it? The sister tells him Jennifer hates their father, that's why she's leaving. DP is taken aback by that.

Jennifer buys her airline ticket—one way. The other doctor tells her he has applied for the same group position (seems there are three or more) and will be going with her to the States.

Other Doctor is disappointed that Jennifer never wears the necklace he gave her. He tells her he will never let her go this time. She doesn't like the idea, but doesn't really put her foot down yet, either. His mother and Jennifer's aunt are excited about them coming to the States and have planned a party for both families.

Jinpung on his honeymoon was hilarious. I love this guy!! I love this show!!

Dapung still doesn't get it... He needs to be honest (instead of turning everything into a joke) and tell Boksil what he feels for her...

Boksil: does she have a split personality or what? As Boksil she is kinda goofy but sweet and compassionate. Jennifer is so mean and cold. Jennifer needs to get over her anger of her dad and Daepung. She is also cold acting towards her sister. Her sister's mom wasn't treated well by the dad either. She had to be married to a man who loved someone else the entire marriage!! Sister's mom was ill and died too. I want Boksil back because Jennifer is not a nice person...

Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

Episode 47-B (Tues)

JP & SJ are very happy and in love after their first night, kissing in the sunset on the beach, having a blissful time.

Seonpung and Eunji go the his parents' home. Mom is exhausted and sick after the wedding. The 'war of the spouses' continues. Since they're at SP's home, that family's rules apply, so EJ has to act as the obedient wife. She cringes when her MIL tells her to go cook dinner for her husband.

(Deleted scene) In the kitchen, Eunji with Miran hitting those 'pots 'n' pans'. EJ asks about Sujin being a lawyer; Miran tells her that stereotypes should be put aside. Like the one that fat women cannot be actresses. EJ kind of sneers at that and says she can't believe Miran really is an actress. Miran replies that EJ only comes to the house once a month and now she knows why she (Miran) is never glad to see her! class ul MR: What about you? Did you go to Lee Young Ae's wedding? [famous K-actress]
EJ: Why would I go to Lee Young Ae's wedding?
MR: I don't think you can call yourself a star when you can't even get an invite to a top star's wedding.
EJ: (indignantly) That person has nothing to do with me.
MR: That person also has nothing to do with me. (EJ is speechless) Since we both have nothing to do with Lee Young Ae, let's not throw blows at each other.
EJ: But I've done some filming.
MR: But you're not doing any now.
EJ: Right now I'm looking for my next project.
MR: I'm also looking for my next project. You're resting; I'm resting. You're looking; I'm looking. You're cooking, I'm washing the dishes. You're the wife, I'm the cousin. (EJ is totally confounded and sputtering). What do you think? Isn't this great?
EJ: (grinding her teeth) Do you by chance hate me?
MR: (imitating EJ's whiny voice) There's no reason to like you. You only come by once a month anyway. Oh, poor Seonpung. (MR takes off her gloves and goes looking for Hana's mom...)
Outside in the alley, Suhui is trying to quiet the hungry Hana, not wanting to return home until the 'guests' (SP & EJ) have left. Mipung comes along and takes her to a street vendor where they eat some snacks. He wants to know why she always does this—leaves and won't go home. She is embarrassed because she isn't family, she tells him. People always ask who she is and why she's there. He tells her the next time someone comes over, she is not to leave. "Seeing our Hana like this makes me sad," he tells her. Mipung holds Suhui's hand as they walk home. He instructs her to stay home next time and if she feels nervous, she is to call him and he will come home early. She will feel okay if he is there with her.

Meanwhile, Miran is looking for Suhui and Hana, mumbling to herself about EJ. Her acting 'sucks,' but she has a pretty face. Is that everything?! As she round a corner, Miran and Brutus literally bump into each other! They have a little scuffle with words. He calls her a 'mountain.' She says that makes him Mt. Everest! They bicker back and forth some more then she shoves him down and continues on her way.

SP's mother tells Eunji to take her husband home. As they walk, EJ apologizes to him and wants to make up. SP is hesitant. She promises to be a good wife, to visit his parents often, not to side with her mother against SP, etc. She starts kissing him and he seems to be melting...

Meanwhile, in the other marital war zone, Yeongdal is polishing his golf clubs while Ice Mom reads. She asks him why he's doing that when he hasn't touched them for 10 years! He says he realizes that he should live his own life, pursuing his own interests and hobbies. She tells him if he's going to go 'outside the home,' he should spend the time with her in attending a Renoir exhibition. No way. He can't stand the thought of looking at a bunch of paintings of women in their hats and fancy airs, women like Ice Mom. They've spent the last 30 years together and now he wants to spend time without her. Her feelings are hurt. He tells her to be quiet and leave him alone.

Dad is coming home and sees DP sitting in the dark pharmacy. He goes inside and asks his son about Boksil. She's leaving. Did you try to stop her? It's no use... You have to get married. Why? You're the only loose stone left rolling around in our house. I need a woman to get married. What happened to all the women you used to have? They've disappeared. It's karma... you're being punished for being a playboy all that time. You really have to move out. What are your plans? I don't know. You have to get married and settle down! Father, you're too mean. All right, I give up. Marry if you want. Don't if you want. Do whatever you want. Father leaves...

Gramps gets a call from his older brother. They set up an arranged date for DP with a 'lovely, graceful young woman.' She's a researcher in a lab. DP refuses. Gramps orders him to go. It's lunch this Sunday. And don't do anything that will embarrass the family!

DP goes whining to his mother. She tells him to go or not to go. She just wants to be left alone because she's ill and now she is sleepy. He gets upset, accusing her of not caring about him. She gets fed up with his nagging. He wants her to cook for him. He tries to lie down beside her to take a nap, his arms around her. She angrily pushes him away. You're not a little child! [He's pathetic, actually.] She drives him away, telling him to cook his own meal and be sure to wash up his dishes afterwards!

DP goes to his room to take a nap. He is quickly thrown out by a crew of workers who have come to replace the flooring and put up new wallpaper for the newlyweds. DP goes to the hospital and hears Other Doctor is leaving for the States, too. They go to the roof to talk. DP asks Other Doctor to let him (DP) have his place—he wants to go to the States, too. OD gets mad and tells DP the game is over and DP has lost.

DP goes to Jennifer's house. He drags her out to a park where a wedding is taking place in the background. He asks when she is leaving. So, we won't ever see each other again? That's a big possibility. She tells him 'good-bye' and starts to walk away. He grabs her arm. Wait. Shall I buy you a present? Why would you buy me a present? You never have before. She removes his grasp and walks away. Wait! Shall I buy you a ring then? Excuse me? (she turns towards him) What kind of ring? You know... a diamond ring. The kind with a diamond solitaire in the middle with other gems around it. The kind women like.... Why do you want to buy me that kind of a ring? Just because. Just because I want to buy you one. Don't talk nonsense and go. You say weird things. Hey! (he yells at her) Really! Leave while I'm being nice. He grabs her arm again and won't let go. Bokshil! Why do you keep bothering me?! Let Go! Let go. Let go (she repeatedly slaps his hand) She walks away. He yells after her: Bokshil! Will you marry me?! (she stops with her back to him) Will you marry me? Don't go to the US. Will you marry me?

Bokshil turns around and looks at him. Fadeout....

Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

This week concluded episodes 47 & 48.

Jinpung and Sujin come home after their honeymoon. Eunji has a semi-bratty air of a snippity DIL. She's insecure about her position as 'favored' DIL, basically bragging that she and her mother made and brought all the food, etc. Sujin, having been raised in the States with a working mother struggling to feed them, hasn't learned proper Korean etiquette. She senses that she hasn't done things properly in arriving at her in-laws.

Mom also is worried about Sujin's upbringing, that she doesn't know how to do things 'properly.' But Mom isn't looking down on her. She feels sorry that Sujin has a 'cold wind' blowing through her heart. That must equal an emptiness. Mom plans to hug and love Sujin a lot to make up for it. Good news!

Mipung goes searching for Suhui and Hana. Suhui has spoken with her mother on the phone and it wasn't pleasant. Plus, Suhui feels awkward when she's at Mipung's and the family is eating with JP and SJ, so she has left and is sitting alone in the night with Hana on her back. MP finds her, they have a crying session and he ends up hugging her, comforting her that his family is her family, that she has Hana, Hana's father, and MP to help her out.

Daepung stands forlornly at the bottom of the stairs of his old clinic, staring at the Chinese take out sign. His father has come up with an ingenious way of getting DP to take some action and figure things out with Jennifer. He matter of factly eliminates a place for DP to stay at home! LOL! Finally, DP puts on his thinking cap and decides to move in to Boksil's home at her father's request. (Both fathers are being quite clever in silently maneuvering their kids.)

Episode 48 ends with DP getting out of a taxi at the front gate, ringing the bell, announcing that the doctor has summoned him.

With only 6 eps left, it'll be interesting to see how DP will manage to change himself so that Boksil would be willing to stay for him. Boksil waited 3+ years for DP to express some romantic feelings for her and all she gets from DP is he wants to get married so he can avoid going on blind dates arranged by his grandfather? DP just seems incapable of expressing any type of romantic eelings for any woman because that would mean he would be speaking in a soft and tender tone. All he knows is talking loud and down to people.

Re: K-Drama: 솔약국집 아들들 (My Too Perfect Sons)

In the beginning of this drama I couldn't figure what the heck Boksil saw in Daepung. He was rude, loud, obnoxious and ignorant of other people's feelings. I don't think that anymore. I see in him what Boksil saw. DP had heart and compassion in his work. DP loved his family. As much as Boksil still loves DP, she wants HIM to know and express his feelings towards her.

I think in the past, Boksil would have accepted DP the way he was. After leaving him and living her former life again, she realized she wants the man she loves to respect her. I'm glad she's waited for him to grow up. DP will always be DP but he will have some depth to him now. I see change in him too. Boksil, like any woman, wants that ..."Sarang a yo". DP keeps skirting around the truth in him...
