C-drama: KSCI 7pm 新结婚时代 (The New Era of Marriage) 11/23/2007-1/2/2008
This drama will replace The Mute Bride at the KSCI/LA18 7pm time slot.
This drama has 26 episodes. I have found the Chinese episode summaries, so I'll be able to post those.
This is a mainland Chinese production, but one of the lead actresses is from Taiwan. Her name is Liu Ro-Ying.

At the end of the Mute Bride on 11/21, KSCI/LA18 showed minute 5 to 10 of Episode 1, that's why I thought they had edited parts of the beginning of Ep. 1. 11/22, KSCI/LA18 aired the Armenian Telethon, so this drama resumed on 11/23 and it began with Ep. 1 in its entirety. Unfortunately, the signals were in and out most of the show, so it was difficult to follow this drama.

Episode 1-5 Summaries
Episode 1
The editors of a publishing house, Xiao Xi and Jien Jia, were having disagreement with the sales/marketing manager about the title of the new book they are publishing. The manager said the title is boring. He said it should be called "The 3 Years I Was a Kept Woman". It was Valentine's Day and Jien Jia received a bunch of expensive blue roses. Her boyfriend asked her to come to dinner and to expect a surprise. Jien Jia thought her boyfriend is probably going to ask her to marry (he's married by the way). Meanwhile, Jien Guo and Xiao Xi were going to spend a quiet Valentine's Day at home until they got a phone call from Jien Guo's father saying that he and his relatives (uncle and 2 cousins) are in town. They were suppose to arrive next week, but they were able to get a ride into town, so they are there. They expect that the medical problem they came for consultation can be treated right away. So Xiao Xi had to bring them in to the hospital to ask her mom for a favor. Xiao Xi had to move back to her parents' house so the guys can stay together at her house.
Xiao-Xi found out that she's pregnant. Jien Jia met her boyfriend for dinner and he gave her a pair of huge diamond earrings. She was disappointed that she didn't get a marriage proposal, but more so is her boyfriend's attitude that he can't get a divorce. The next day, Jien Jia gave the keys to her house and car back to her boyfriend. Xiao Xi and Xiao Hahn helped Jien Jia moved into her small rented apartment.
Jien Guo's relatives forgot to turn of the water faucet in their bathroom sink, so the water overflowed the apartment. They had to pay damages ($5,000) to the downstairs neighbor.
Episode 2
第2集 小西终于送走了建国的远房亲戚，搬回家居住。没想到何又提出老家要盖房子，共需五万元，并让建国出4万元。小西不能理解老家盖房子要自己出钱，而且还要那么多，坚决不同意，与建国之间再次发生争执。在送何父去车站的路上，小西明确向何父表示，自己不能出这个钱，建国当着父亲的面打小西。小西一气之下要做掉刚怀孕不久的孩子，被简佳稳住，并通知了建国。小航听说小西被打，要找何建国算账，小西急忙阻拦，不想发生先兆性流产。
Jien-Guo's relatives left, but his father stayed on for a few more days. Xiao Xi's mother told Xiao Xi to go home. Jien-Guo's father wanted to build a new house in the country and asked Jien-Guo to pay for it ($40,000). Xiao Xi doesn't understand why they have to pay for it for something she doesn't want. Xiao Xi and Jien Guo argued about it. The next day, they took Jien-Guo's father to the train station. Enroute, Xiao-Xi told Jien Guo's father that they are not responsible for building a house for them. But Jien-Guo's father said Jien-Guo's older brother sacrificed by not going to college so Jien-Guo can go, so Jien-Guo owes his brother. Xiao Xi said if that's the case, it's the father who is lacking. Jien-Guo to save face, slapped Xiao Xi and Xiao Xi left them right there. Xiao Xi wanted to get an abortion, but Jien-Jia stopped her from doing so by telling her that they have to do the publicity for the new book, so she can't do the operation yet.
Meanwhile, Xiao Hahn heard that Jien-Guo hit Xiao Xi, so he went to Jien-Guo's office and started a fight. Xiao Xi tried to stop the guys from fighting and she started to show signs of a miscarriage. Everyone rushed her to the hospital.
Episode 3
第3集 小西按医生的医嘱回家休息，何建国向顾母表示自己不该动手，每天到顾家照顾小西并承担了顾家的家务，盖房风波暂时平来自息。由于小西不能上班，新书的新闻发布会改由简佳主持。为了造势发行部主任让简佳组织人参加签名售书，建国、小航都动员自己的朋友和同事参加。结果售书现场盛况空前，特别是刘凯瑞一下子购买三百本，成为全场的焦点，新书一下子脱销。在家休息的小西得知情况非常高兴，而简佳则因为刘凯瑞的出现心中不是滋味。
Xiao Xi was ordered bed rest by the doctor. Jien-Guo swore to Xiao Xi's mother that he will not hit Xiao Xi again. Xiao Xi rested at home so her retired father can take care of her during the day. Jien-Guo would visit Xiao Xi at night and cooked for the family. Jien-Jia ended up doing the publicity/press conference for the release of the new book because Xiao Xi couldn't go. The marketing manager asked all the employees to bring friends to the book signing so it would look like the book is selling very well. Liu Kai-Rei found out about the book signing and bought 300 books. His appearance became the focus of the media. The new book sold out in seconds. Xiao Xi was excited to hear the news that the new book sold well (her year end bonus is now guaranteed). Meanwhile, Jien Jia doesn't know how to handle the appearance of her boyfriend.
Episode 4
第4集 小西将简佳的情况告诉了顾母，顾母热心地给简佳介绍了自己医院的一个博士，结果简佳的诚实相告却换来了对方和奚落。小西因为要保胎在家休息，鼓励退休在家的顾父写书， 结果却未能参加单位的竟聘，影响了事业，而简佳则因为与小西一道的工作成绩，顺利当上了副主任。小西感到很失落，并迁怒于何建国。小西新的选题被简佳否定，心中更加不快。何建国老家的房子要动工了，来电话要钱，小西与建国再次发生激烈的争吵，不幸又流产了，医生说可能是习惯性流产。
Xiao Xi's mom introduced Jien Jia to a doctor at her hospital, but it didn't go well because Jien-Jia told him about her 6-year relationship with her ex. She thought she was being honest, but the doctor criticized her for not being a virgin. Xiao Xi had to continue her bed rest. She encouraged her retired father (an university professor) to write (so she can publish his books). Because she had to stay home, Xiao Xi missed a promotion at work. Jien Jia ended up being an assistant manager. Xiao Xi felt a little bit left out and took out her anger on Jien Guo. Jien Jia came over to visit Xiao Xi and Xiao Xi showed Jien Jia her ideas of potential titles for their future publications, but Jien Jia shot down every single idea that Xiao Xi had. Xiao Xi didn't say anything then, but she was not happy about that. Once again, Jien Guo's father called and asked them to pay for the building of their new house because the construction is about to start. Jien Guo and Xiao Xi got into another fight. Eventually they made up. But one morning while Jien-Guo was at work, Xiao Xi tried to remove the bedding that she was airing outside. She miscarried her baby. The doctor now thinks that Xiao Xi has a tendency to miscarry.
Episode 5
第5集 何建国老家农村的货车进京私自带客被交警扣留，何父为显示自己京城有人，又一次让何建国解决，建国只好又求小西帮忙，并解释车主与乘客是亲戚。小西连忙赶到现场，解释不是私自带客，结果当事人却互不认识，小西被警察训斥。事情虽然在刘凯瑞帮助下解决了，但小西认为建国欺骗自己，与建国发生争吵并引发了农村与城市差别的份争，建国的自尊心受到极大伤害，离家出走。此时，顾父在外地旅游发生了意外，腿骨骨折。
One of the villagers brought people into the city in his truck and was held up at one of the city stations at the outskirts of the city. Mr. Ho called Jien-Guo to ask for help. Jien-Guo asked Xiao Xi for help. Jien-Guo swore that this village is the most honest villager in town and the passengers are his relatives and did not try to transport people for money (the fine would have been $40,000). Xiao Xi was trying to rest the day after her miscarriage, but she still called around. She couldn't really find the right people to fix the problem. Then she called Jien Jia who happened to have dinner with her marketing manager, the author of her new book, and her ex-boyfriend Liu Kai-Rei. Liu heard about the problem and made a phone call. He met up with Xiao Xi at the city station 40 minutes later. Xiao Xi tried to defend the villager that the people he transported were relatives, but the villager did not know his passengers' names. Xiao Xi was embarrassed by Jien-Guo's lie about how honest that villager was. In any case, Liu Kai-Rei was able to fix the problem and the truck was released.
Xiao Xi went home really pissed off. Jien-Guo meanwhile cooked a nice meal, clean the house, and tried to be nice to Xiao Xi. She didn't buy it and they got into a big fight. She was not happy that she had to go all the way to the other side of the city when she should be resting after a miscarriage. Then Jien Guo said at his village, women would have abortions and the next day they would be in the field working. Xiao Xi then said that they are a different breed of people. Jien-Guo was offended and packed his bags and took off. Liu Kai Rei happened to see Jien-Guo drunk on the street and brought him home. Meanwhile, Mr. Goo who was on a trip to Han Zhou got hurt in the bathroom and broke his leg. Xiao Hahn was sent to bring his father home.

Episode 6 (11/30/2007 Friday)

顾母让小西、小航、建国轮留请假照顾顾父，为了能让小航去意大利考察，建国一个人主动承担了照顾顾教授的责任，让小航、小西很是感动。建国为了照顾好教授，搬来顾家，不分昼夜，无微不至，非常周到，小西父母看在眼里，心里过意不去，想尽快找个保姆。小航从国外回来为众人带了礼物，正巧简佳也在场，小航史好将为将来女朋友准备的礼物 送给了简佳。夜里小航毛手毛脚照顾不好顾父，老人感慨建国是个好孩子，只是家里的事太多了。
Dr. Goo asked Xiao Xi, Xiao Hahn, and Jien-Guo to ask for days off at work so they can take turns taking care of Mr. Goo. Xiao-Xi was going to be sent to Italy by his architecture company for business, so Jien-Guo agreed to take on the burden of the caretaker by suggesting that he will move into the Goo family home.
[12/3/2007, Monday episode]
Jien-Guo takes such great care of the family, that the Goo parents decided that they should hire a housekeeper soon to lessen Jien-Guo's burden. Xiao-Hahn returned home from overseas and brought home tons of presents for everyone. Because Jien-Jia was there, Xiao-Hahn had to give her the present he had set aside for his girlfriend. During the night, it was Xiao-Hahn's turn to take care of his father, but he was just not up to the job. Mr. Goo had mixed feelings. He felt that Jien-Guo is really a good man, it's just that there are too many things going on from his side of the family.
Episode 7 (12/3/2007 Monday)
第7集 简佳感觉到小西对自己态度的变化，找小西谈心，真诚地承认因为小西未能参加竟聘自己才当上副主任的，多少使小西心中不衡了许多。小航再一次失恋，来到酒巴，无意巧遇简佳。简佳借着酒劲向小航讲述了自己与刘凯瑞并不只是因为钱，这让多次因为钱而失恋又一心想找真爱的小航产生许多感慨，两人之间发生了些微妙的变化。简佳出租房门被风毁坏，请小航帮忙。简佳为感谢请小航吃饭，不巧遇见了同样为感谢请刘凯瑞吃饭的小西。看到简佳与小航在一起，小西怒气冲天地拉着小航离去。
Jien Jia felt that Xiao Xi is drifting apart from her, so she decided to have a long talk with Xiao Xi. She sincerely admitted that the reason she got promoted was because Xiao Xi wasn't able to participated in the process. This talk made Xiao Xi feel better. Xiao-Hahn once again got his heart broken and went to a bar. At the bar, she met Jien Jia by coincidence. While drinking, Jien Jia told Xiao-Hahn that she didn't spend 6 years with Liu Kai-Rei because of his money. Xiao-Hahn was touched by Jien-Jia's feelings, especially he was dumped several times by women because of money. The relationship between the 2 began to change. The glass at Jien Jia's apartment was broken by strong wind. Jien-Jia asked Xiao-Hahn to help her. Jien Jia took Xiao-Hahn out to dinner to thank him. At the restaurant, they saw Xiao-Xi and Liu Kai-Rei (Xiao Xi invited him to thank him also). Xiao Xi was mad seeing her friend and her brother together, so she pulled Xiao-Hahn away and left the restaurant.
Episode 8
第8集 在编辑室里，小西与简佳都觉得很不自然。为消除小西的误会，简佳告诉小西别人给自己介绍了一个外交官，让小西陪同赴约。何父又一次突然来京，小西担心又有什么事，也担心他问孩子的事，借口父亲骨折要照顾，回娘家居住。其实这次何父来京并没有做什么事要办，主要是给怀孕的小西送点东西补补。当建国告诉父亲孩子没了，何父伤心不已，以为小西不想为何家生儿育女，怒气冲冲来到医院，找顾母想问个究竟，却因为顾母为抢救危重病人未能及时接待何父。何父觉得小西母女看不起自己，训斥建国不是小西家的上门妇婿。
At work, it was awkward between Xiao Xi and Jien Jia. In order to fix the misunderstanding, Jien Jia told Xiao Xi that a friend had introduced a diplomat to her. She wants Xiao Xi to go on the matchmaking session with her. Mr. Ho showed up at Beijing again. Xiao Xi worried that something must be up. She was also worried that he would ask about the baby, so she used her father as an excuse (that she had to take care of him) and moved back to the Goo house. But Mr. Ho's visit was simply to bring some food to supplement Xiao Xi's pregnancy diet. When Jien-Guo told his father that they had lost the baby, Mr. Ho was really sad. He also thought that Xiao Xi did not want to have any children, so he rushed over to the hospital where Xiao Xi's mother worked and tried to talk to Dr. Goo about it. But Dr. Goo had an emergency case on her hand and couldn't meet Mr. Ho. So Mr. Ho thought the Goo's didn't respect him and questioned Jien-Guo whether he had "married into" the Goo family, instead of the other way around.
Episode 9
第9集 何父不能理解小西家的所作所为，认为城里的媳妇中看不中用，埋怨建国不是男人，管不住媳妇，建国无耐，只能默默地听着。小西陪简佳约会外交官，再一次未果。小航路遇刘凯瑞与自己前女友在一起，告诉了简佳，简佳冷漠地表示与自己无关。春节将至，何父来电让建国带小西一起回老家过年，建国也感觉这几年都没回老家过年，让小西今年回家，小西心中也感到应该回一趟家了，但一想起以前回老家的情景心中感到恐惧，坚决不回。建国感到小西不尽人情，两人冷战。
Mr. Ho doesn't understand why Xiao-Xi would do the things she does. He now thinks that daughter-in-laws from the cities are good to look at, but not good at anything else. Mr. Ho also blames his son for not being MAN enough and can't control his own woman. Jien-Guo can only remain silent and listen to his father's complaints. Xiao-Xi went to a matchmaking session with Jien Jia (with the diplomat). It didn't pan out. Xiao-Hahn saw Jien-Jia's ex boyfriend (Liu Kai-Rei) with Xiao-Hahn's ex-girlfriend and told Jien-Jia about it. Jien-Jia coldly passed it off as having nothing to do with her. The Chinese New Year will arrive soon. Mr. Ho called his son and asked him to bring Xiao-Xi home to spend Chinese New Year in the country. Jien-Guo also thought that since he hadn't gone home for Chinese New Year in the last few years, he believed it's about time that he should bring Xiao-Xi home this year. Although Xiao-Xi thought she should go back to the Ho village, the image of her last visit (her first miscarriage) still haunted her, so she firmly refused to go back with Jien-Guo. Jien-Guo felt that Xiao-Xi was being unreasonable and they fought again and stopped speaking to each other.
Episode 10
第10集 为了达到不回家的目的，小西张罗为建国家的亲戚买东西，远的近的都准备了许多礼物，想以此来打动建。建国不为所动，坚持两人一起回老家过年。在父母的劝说下，小西无耐地答应了，建国非常高兴。因为没有买到车票，建国心急如焚，小西却暗中窃喜。不料建国连夜等到了退票，小西无话可说，只好跟建国回家过年。过年食堂过假，一直吃食堂的顾父只好让小航去超市买点年货。小航故意来到了简佳常去的超市。为了建国，小西尽力像农村媳妇一样去佬伺候男人，而建国也在外人面前对小西吆五喝六。
In order to avoid going to the Ho Village, Xiao-Xi started buying presents for Jien-Guo's family. She wants to use this method to placate Jien-Guo, but he wouldn't budge. He insists that both of them should return home together. Xiao-Xi's parents managed to persuade Xiao-Xi to go home with Jien-Guo. Reluctantly, Xiao Xi agreed. Jien-Guo was ecstatic. But Jien-Guo was unable to buy train tickets home. He was worried, but Xiao-Xi was secretly happy about it. Unrelenting, Jien-Guo waited overnight to get cancelled tickets. Xiao Xi had to go home with Jien-Guo.
On the day of the trek back home, Xiao Xi forgot her ID card at work and asked Jien Jia to bring it to the train station. Xiao-Hahn drove his sister and BIL to the train station and met up with Jien Jia and then drove her home. He is showing signs of liking Jien Jia.
Monday (12/10/07)
During the New Year's holiday, the restaurants are closed, so Mr. Goo (Xiao-Xi's father) had to get Xiao-Hahn to go grocery shopping for some food. Xiao Hahn purposely chose to shop at the grocery store nearest to Jien Jia's house (the one that Jien Jia said she was planning to go to shop for New Year's provisions). At the Ho village, Xiao-Xi played the part of the country girl and met the needs of the men in the house like a maid. She did it to please Jien-Guo, but instead of appreciating her, Jien-Guo bossed her around in front of everyone.

Episode 11-15 Summaries
Episode 11
第11集 简佳不想回家主动承担了单位的值班，独自一人在寒冷的出租房内，小航来到了她的身边，简佳感到从沿线有过的温暖。她向小航讲述了自己的母亲，自己的童年，母亲去世后自己就怕过年，直到今天。言语中流露出自己渴望能有一个温暖的家。简佳的情绪感染了小航，在离开简佳住处的路上，两人的手自然地牵到了一起。尽管小西努力去做，但实在无法适应当地的习俗，更不适应当地艰苦的生活环境，病倒了。粗心的建国为了表演给家里人看，仍旧像农村人一样对待小西，小西负气提前离开农村。
Jien Jia didn't want to go home for the holidays, so she volunteered to be on-call at work. She spent a very cold day by herself in her small rented apartment. Xiao-Hahn came over and Jien Jia finally felt the warmth that she had never felt before. She told Xiao-Hahn about her own mother and her own childhood. She told him that ever since her mother passed away, she has been afraid of Chinese New Year....until today. In her discussion, one can see that she hopes for a warm home of her own. Jien Jia's emotions overtook Xiao-Hahn's feelings. When they were walking out together, their hands touched and they held hands. No matter how hard Xiao-Xi tried, she couldn't meet the standards of a country daughter-in-law. She also couldn't adapt to the harshness of the living conditions of the countryside. Consequently, she fell ill. For some reason, maybe it's being at the village, Jien-Guo didn't notice how ill Xiao-Xi was. Jien-Guo was trying to play the big man in front of his family and friends that he treated Xiao-xi like a country pumpkin. Xiao-Xi got so mad that she left the village early, by herself.
Episode 12 (12/11/07, Tuesday)
第12集 小西的不辞而别，让何父暴怒，觉得很没面子，责怪建国让自己在村子里抬不起头，建国只能无语地忍受着。小西回家后让简佳到家里吃饭，饭桌上一家人谈起了男女在一起还是应该男大女小，但小航却来认为如此，年龄不是爱情的障碍。小西似乎看出了小航对简佳的想法，告戒小航简佳不是小姑娘了，再也经不起打击了。建国知道小西是因为生病才回家的，心中很内疚，春节一过就带着保姆来到顾家，向小西道歉。顾家让保姆小夏不要拘束，而建国则教育小夏要摆正自己的位置。
Jien-Guo's father is furious with Xiao-Xi's leaving (without saying goodbye). They felt they lost face and scolded Jien-Guo for not standing up as a man. Jien-Guo can only listen and couldn't say anything. Xiao-Hahn didn't give up pursuing Jien Jia and visited her at work. But she refused him once again. That night Xiao-Xi invited Jien Jia over for dinner. After dinner, Xiao-Hahn and Xiao-Xi went into an argument about whether the man should be older than the woman (or the other way around) in a relationship. Xiao-Xi believes that the man should be older, but Xiao-Hahn disagrees. Xiao-Xi seemed to have detected Xiao-Hahn's feelings for Jien Jia and warned him not to "play" with Jien Jia's feelings. Xiao-Xi told Xiao-Hahn that Jien Jia wouldn't be able to tolerate another failed relationship.
(12/12/07, Wednesday)
Later, Jien-Guo found out that Xiao-Xi left his house early because she was really sick. He felt really guilty about that. So right after the Chinese New Year's holiday is over, he brought a housekeeper from his village to work for the Goo's. He apologized to Xiao Xi. The Goo's are excited about the new housekeeper Xiao-Xia. They told her to act like one of their family members, but Jien-Guo told Xiao-Xia never to forget her place (the servant) in that household.
Episode 13
第13集 又一个情人节，小航给简佳送红玫瑰被小西看到，她也禁告简佳与小航不合适，简佳很伤心，小航安慰简佳年龄不应该成为他们之间的障碍。建国劝小西不要掺和小航与简佳的事，并分析了利弊。小西则认为建国自私，对不是自己家的事漠不关心。小西找小航谈心，向他陈述利弊，小航则拿当初她和何建国说事，小西无耐只得将此事告诉了父母，父母的坚决反对，认为简佳是个嫌贫爱富。小航把父母的态度告诉了简佳，并表示自己做父母的工作，直到说服父母为止，这让简佳很感动。
Valentine's Day has arrived again. Xiao-Xi found out about the red roses that Xiao-Hahn sent Jien Jia and she warned Jien Jia that she is not suitable for her brother. Jien Jia was very hurt by it. Xiao-Hahn tried to make Jien Jia feel better by telling her that their age difference should be the obstacle in their relationship. Jien Guo told Xiao Xi not to meddle between Xiao Hahn and Jien Jia. He also analyzed the situation (the pros and cons) for Xiao Xi, but Xiao Xi said Jien Guo is selfish and accused Jien Guo of not caring about stuff that doesn't involve his family. Xiao-Xi decides to talk to Xiao-Hahn herself, but Xiao-Hahn used Xiao-Xi's own relationship example to refute her. Xiao Xi had no choice but to tell her parents about the budding relationship between Xiao Hahn and Jien Jia. Xiao-Xi's parents are totally against having Jien Jia as their daughter-in-law. They think Jien Jia is the type of girl who likes rich men and won't have anything to do with any guys who don't have money. Xiao-Hahn told Jien Jia about his parents' opposition but he promised Jien Jia that he will work hard to change his parents' mind. He won't quit until he persuades them. His promise touched Jien Jia deeply.
Episode 14
第14集 小航找小西帮助说服父母，小西则表示他与简佳不舒适，拒绝了小航。建国也开导小航结婚不只是两个人的事，关系到全家的利益与名誉，否则可能要丢全家人的脸。建国的话让小航误以为小西是因为自私才阻止自己与简佳在一起的。小航父母也拿小西与建国为例子，劝说小航结婚光有爱情是不够的，婚后很可能会出现类似小西与建国之间的矛盾。小航则固执地认为不能因为只是有某种可能就不去追求幸福。何父来信让建国给哥哥建成找个工作，并说自己马上送建成过来。建国只好又求小西帮忙。
Xiao-Hahn asked Xiao-Xi to help persuade their parents about Jien Jia, but Xiao-Xi told him that she doesn't think Jien Jia is a good match for him. Jien Guo also advised that a marriage is not really between 2 people only, it involves the whole family's well-being and reputation. He said if Xiao Hahn's not careful, his family may loose face. After Jien-guo's talk, Xiao Hahn mistakenly thought the reason Xiao Xi is against his relationship with Jien Jia was because of her selfishness and prejudice.

Xiao Hahn's parents also used Xiao Xi's marriage as an example, saying that love alone is not enough in a marriage. They believe that if Xiao Hahn marries Jien Jia, the same kind of conflicts may arise between them as well. Xiao Hahn insisted that just because there is a possibility of unhappiness that he should stop pursuing happiness. Jien-Guo's father sent Jien-Guo a letter asking Jien-Guo to find a job for his brother Jien-Tseng. He also said he will send Jien-Tseng over to the city soon. So Jien-Guo had to ask for Xiao-Xi's help once again.

第15集 建国的公司收到客户的投诉，老板批评了建国，并责成建国亲自去湖北解决问题，建国说父亲要来北京，能否让别人去湖北，老板批评建国男人要人事业为重。建国歉意地把接待父兄的事托给小西。小西父母为了阻止小航，找简佳谈心，让简佳离开小航，简佳婉转却又坚决地拒绝了，顾母因此旧病复发，小西心疼父母，决定自己来做工作。由于小夏的到来，顾父的书稿终于完成了，很高兴，小西从市场的角度要求父亲改书名。小西细心地接待了建国父兄，并告诉何父建成的工作找好了。
Jien-Guo's company received complaints from customers. Jien Guo's boss criticized Jien-Guo for not handling the case well. He instructed Jien-Guo to go to Hu Bei Province himself to resolve this problem. Jien-Guo said his father is coming into town and would prefer that someone else go in his place, but his boss scolded Jien-Guo saying that a man should pay more attention to work than to personal business. Jien-Guo had no choice but to leave the chore of welcoming Jien-guo's father and brother to Xiao Xi.
At the publishing house, the marketing manager asked Xiao-Xi and Jien Jia for ideas to promote author Chen's book. He suggested contacting Liu Kai-Rei again as he supported author Chen's last book. So Xiao-Xi called up Liu and asked to meet to discuss the details for promoting author Chen's newest book.
Xiao Xi's parents wanted to put a stop to Xiao Hahn's relationship with Jien Jia, so they decided to talk to Jien Jia about it. They invited Jien Jia over for dinner.

Xiao Xi's parents want Jien Jia to leave Xiao Hahn, but Jien Jia managed to carefully (and politely) refused their request. Consequently, Dr. Goo's heart condition worsened. Xiao Xi's father was ecstatic that he finished his book's manuscript because the housekeeper, Xiao Xia, was able to take care of all the household chores that he used to do. Xiao Xi asked her father that he may have to change the title of his book in order to cater to the bigger market. Xiao Xi carefully welcomed Jien-Guo's father and brother. She also informed them that she was able to find a job for Jien-Tseng.

第16集 小航带何家父子来到工地，看到这里的条件，何父心疼儿子，让小航能否找个写写算算的工作，小航很为难，何父很不高兴，建成倒是很通情达理，表示别人能住，自己也能住。发行部主任坚决反对顾父的选题发行，认为没有市场，简佳拒理力争，发行部主任表示只能自费发行，小西只好找刘凯瑞赞助，并回家告诉父亲新书要压缩到25万字。何父给建成送被子，忘了戴钥匙，进不了家门。建国半夜回到家，看到父亲坐在门外，孝顺的他心如刀割，打电话责怪小西没有照顾好自己的父亲，小西挂掉了电话。何建国怒火中烧，从牙逢中挤出了离婚两个字。
Xiao-Hahn brought Mr. Ho (Jien-Guo's father) and Jien-Tseng (Jien-Guo's older brother) to the construction site. But seeing the work involved, Mr. Ho did not want his son to do the job. He asked whether Xiao-Hahn can find Jien-Tseng an office job. Xiao-Hahn didn't really know what to do. Mr. Ho was not happy with the job (and the living condition of the dormitory) Xiao-Xi found for Jien-Tseng, but Jien-Tseng was very understanding of the situation and said if other people can live there, he can live there too.
The Manager of the Publishing Department insisted that there is no market for Mr. Goo's book, so he is not going to publish the book. Jien Jia fought for the publication of the book, but the Manager said the only way it can get published is if the author paid for the publication himself. Xiao-Xi then asked Liu Kai-Rei to help finance the publication of her father's book. She then went home to ask her father to cut the book to less than 250,000 words.
Mr. Ho went to the construction site to give Jien-Tseng extra blankets, but he forgot to bring his keys so he couldn't get back into Xiao-Xi's apartment. So he had to wait outside the front door. Jien-Guo came home at midnight and found his father sitting outside and felt bad for his father, so he called Xiao-Xi to accuse her of not taking good care of his father. Xiao-Xi hung up on him. In his anger, he said the "divorce" word.

Liu Kai-Rei arrived at the Publishing House as agreed upon to talk about financing Xiao-Xi's father's book. In front of Jien Jia, Liu suggested that he would like to talk this over with Jien Jia alone. Because it's Mr. Goo's book, Jien Jia reluctantly agreed to meet with Liu alone. The next day is Jien-Guo's birthday. Xiao-Xi is all excited because she had bought her brother's car to give to Jien-Guo as a birthday present (Jien-Guo had always wanted a car, but they couldn't afford it). At the door, she overheard Jien-Guo drunken words about how brothers' love is like hands and feet, but the love for a wife is like clothes (one can take it off any time). Jien-Tseng told Jien-Guo not to say such a thing. Xiao-Xi ran into the room and threw down her present and left the house. Jien-Tseng is afraid that things have gotten out of hand. Mr. Ho also worried that the situation may have gotten bad enough to affect Jien-Guo and Xiao-xi's relationship, so he decided to go over to the Goo's to explain the situation to Dr. Goo. Jien Jia informed Xiao-Xi that Liu had agreed to support the publication of Mr. Goo's book. Xiao-Xi thanked her and asked her not to mention this to anybody so Mr. Goo's pride wouldn't be hurt.

第18集 小西无意中向小航透露了是简佳找刘凯瑞帮忙，解决了父亲出书的赞助，小航非常生气，开始冷淡简佳，简佳误会小西是故意所为，两人之间产生矛盾。当建国看到小西为自己准备的礼物时，心生内疚，同时觉得小西是多么地在意他，又欣慰了许多。何家父子三人来到何顾家，小西母女两确实怕见到何父，借故躲到医院。顾父和小夏接待了他们。两亲家都为自己的孩子作了道歉，顾父答应让小航想办法给建成换个工作。何父又提出让帮助解决表姑夫家迁坟的事，顾父表示无能为力，何父中心不快，说如解决不了，小西必须和建国回去哭坟，也遭到回绝。何父认为顾家不想帮忙，表示如果小西回家一切事都好说，不去就不是何家的儿媳妇。
Xiao-Xi accidentally told Xiao-Hahn that it was Jien Jia who asked for Liu's help in getting their father's book published. Xiao-Hahn was very angry and began to ignore Jien Jia. Jien Jia mistakenly thought it was Xiao-Xi who arranged the whole thing to create problems between her and Xiao-Hahn. After Jien-Guo saw the present that Xiao-Xi had bought for him, he began to feel guilty and realized how much Xiao-Xi cares for him. Jien-Guo, Jien-Tseng, and Mr. Ho came to the Goo's house. Both Dr. Goo and Xiao-Xi left the house to hide in the hospital. Mr. Goo and Xiao-Xia ended up handling the Ho's visit. Both fathers apologized for their children's behavior. Mr. Goo agreed to let Xiao-Hahn find an easier job for Jien-Tseng. Mr. Ho also mentioned that the Goos should help pay for the building of an uncle's tomb, but Mr. Goo said he couldn't help. Mr. Ho was not very happy about it. He said if this can't be resolved, t hen Xiao-Xi must return home to cry at the funeral. That was also turned down by Mr. Goo. Mr. Ho feels that the Goos do not want to help out and said as long as Xiao-Xi goes home (Ho's ancestral home) for a visit, then everything can be resolved quickly.

Jien-Tseng is a very kind and understanding person. He felt that Xiao-Xi had done plenty for the Ho's so he told Jien-Guo not to fight with Xiao-Xi about these things. He also told Jien-Guo not to consider divorce. Xiao-xi brought home the publication contract for her father. Professor Goo is very appreciative and excited. He knows that nowadays, it's next to impossible to publish anything academic. Dr. Goo was very happy for her husband as well. Mr. Ho is finally going home. Xiao-Xia (Goo's housekeeper) wants Mr. Ho to bring some stuff back home. Dr. Goo thought Xiao-Xi may not have enough cash, so she gave Xiao-Xia an advance. Xiao-xi took Xiao Xia into town to do some shopping (and sightseeing). They bought some clothes for Xiao-Xia's child. Xiao Xia feels the Goos are good people. Xiao-Hahn lost $500 and asked who took the money. Everyone said they didn't take it. Although nothing was said, Jien-Guo felt that everyone suspected Xiao-Xia.

第20集 小夏带着东西来到建国家，同时拿出五百块钱让何父一起捎回去。建国告诉小夏小航丢了五百块钱，问是不是她拿了。小夏非常委屈，决定和何父一起回老家。小西极力挽留，不想平时温顺的小夏性情刚烈，坚决不在顾家干了。小航长时间冷落简佳，使她怀疑与小航的感情真像小西说得那样脆弱，提出与小航分手，引起小航误会。他找到刘凯瑞把赞助的两万元钱还给了他。不想心烦意乱的小航发生了车祸。
Xiao Xia brought the stuff she bought to Jien-Guo's house. She took out $500 for Mr. Ho to take home to her family. Jien-Guo told Xiao-Xia that Xiao-Hahn misplaced $500....did she take it. Xiao-Xia was indignant and decided to go back home with Mr. Ho. Xiao Xi tried to persuade Xiao-Xia to stay, but Xiao-Xia couldn't be persuaded and decided to quit her job at the Goos. Xiao-Hahn had been ignoring Jien Jia causing her to believe what Xiao-Xi had warned her about how love between a younger man and an older woman is very fragile. So she wants to break up with Xiao-Hahn causing him to misunderstand. Xiao-Hahn gave back the $20,000 to Liu Kai-Rei (the amount of money he contributed so Professor Goo's book can be published). On his way back, not paying any attention, he got into a car accident.

Xiao-Hahn was only superficially hurt from the car accident. He recovered quickly. Xiao-Hahn told Jien Jia that he had paid back Liu Kai-Rei the money ($20,000) he used to finance Professor Goo's book. He also expressed his love for her and proposed to her. He said he would forego parents to marry her. Jien Jia couldn't let Xiao-Hahn hurt his own parents and insisted that Xiao-Hahn shouldn't hurt his parents for the sake of love. Xiao-Xi realized that it's true love between Xiao-Hahn and Jien Jia, so she decides to support them. But the Goo parents still do not want to give consent. Xiao-Hahn found the $500 that he lost. The Goos felt bad about Xiao-Xia's departure and asked Jien-Guo to bring Xiao-Xia back. Jien-Guo got promoted at work which made Xiao-Xi really proud of him. Xiao-Hahn found Jien-Tseng a easier job which will also allow him to learn a skill. Xiao-Xi now agrees for Jien-Tseng to come live with her and Jien-Guo.

Jien-Tseng is now living with Xiao-Xi and Jien-Guo, but the couple felt inconvenienced by another person living with them. Jien-Tseng decided to move back to the construction site so he wouldn't intrude in Jien-Guo and Xiao-xi's lives. Both Jien-Guo and Xiao-Xi felt bad about it, so when Jien-Tseng got sick, they insisted that Jien-Tseng moves back in with them. Xiao-Xi rarely cooks at home, she even made midnight snacks for Jien-Tseng. Xiao-Hahn insulted a VIP client because of helping Jien-Tseng and was taken off his duties. Jien-Tseng is really grateful to Xiao-Hahn and his family. Xiao-xi continued to worry about not able to have a baby. Her mother tried to make her feel better by saying her condition can be cured. Dr. Goo even found Xiao-Xi a herbal medicine doctor. Xiao-Xi bravely drank the bitter herbal medicine daily to alter her infertility. Professor Goo's book is about to be published. Xiao-Xi and Jien Jia planned a book launching/book discussion party for Professor Goo. The Marketing Manager wanted the support of Jien-Guo's company, so he invited Jien-Guo to come to Professor Goo's book launching party as one of the panel members.

At Professor Goo's book discussion party, only the elite were invited as part of the discussion panel. Xiao-Xi was really proud of Jien-Guo for being invited, so she spent a lot of time dressing Jien-Guo properly for the event. At the party, Liu Kai-Rei found out that the author of the book he was asked to support was Xiao-Hahn's father, he scolded Jien-Jia for lying to him and used him. So when Liu made the speech, he indirected laughed at Xiao-Hahn and Jien-Jia. But this only brought the two of them closer together. Xiao-Hahn's boss found out the truth about Xiao-Hahn and invited him back to work. Xiao-Hahn's boss apologized to Xiao-Hahn. Jien-Tseng's wife's granfather passed away and Jien-Guo's father asked Jien-Guo and Xiao-Xi to go back for the funeral. Xiao-xi had no choice this time, especially when both her parents insisted that she goes too. Xiao-Xi's mother, exhausted, died from complication of her heart condition. Xiao-Xi was away at Jien-Guo's village and was unable to see her mother for the last time. Xiao-Xi no longer can forgive Jien-guo and his family, so they divorced.

After Dr. Goo passed away, Professor Goo was unable to recover from his loss. Xiao-Xi and Xiao-Hahn were very worried about their father's health. Xiao-Hahn gave Jien Jia a choice--she can let him go or wait for him (until his father gets better). Jien Jia understood Xiao-Hahn's situation and said she would wait until his father gets better. Xiao-Xi found a psychologist and asked him how she can help her father recover. The psychologist suggested that Xiao-xi should try to find Professor Goo a companion as soon as possible. Jien-Tseng regretted that Xiao-Xi had to go back to the village on account of his wife's family. Jien-Guo also felt bad so he brought Xiao-Xia back to take care of Professor Goo. Because of Xiao-Xia, Professor Goo managed to recover from the loss of his wife. Xiao-Hahn and Xiao-xia are happy that their father had managed to pull through. It's Chinese New Year again, Xiao-Xia really wants to go home to see her daughter, but when she thought that Professor Goo had just gotten better, she decided not to go home and to stay with the Professor.

During the New Year's holiday, Xiao-Xia goes out everyday, saying that she is meeting an old friend from home. Xiao-Hahn and Xiao-Xia thought she was probably in love with someone (she went out to meet with her boyfriend) so Xiao-Hahn followed Xiao-Xia (they were worried that Xiao-Xia would be swindled by some bad guy). But Xiao-Xia was going to Jien-Guo's house. Xiao-Xi misunderstood and thought Xiao-Xia and Jien-Guo were having an affair. Xiao-Xi was crying, but then she found out Xiao-Xia was going to Jien-Guo's house because her daughter is staying there. Because she couldn't go home for the holidays, Jien-Guo brought her daughter to the city so Xiao-Xia can see her everyday. Liu Kai-Rei's wife died, so he asked Jien-Jia to marry him, but Jien Jia refused the proposal. When Professor Goo saw that Jien Jia is not the woman they thought (that she loved money more than anything), he gave Xiao-Hahn his consent for him to marry Jien-Jia. Jien-Tseng persuaded Jien-Guo to get back together with Xiao-Xi. Professor Goo also told Xiao-Xi that Jien-Guo still loves her. Her father told her to go talk to Jien-Guo and see if they can reconcile. Xiao-Xi listened to her father and showed up at Jien-Guo's office. Jien-Guo is now the head of the technical department and he has his own office. A year has passed since they divorced. When the receptionist at the front called his office to let him known that Xiao-Xi wanted to see him. He told the receptionist to let Xiao-Xi wait 5 minutes before he can see her (basically, he was so stunned to see Xiao-Xi that he didn't know what to do.)

At his office, Jien-Guo cancelled all his appointments for the day and had a long talk with Xiao-Xi. Jien-Guo, ever teary, apologized to Xiao-xi. Jien-Guo finally told the truth about why he would do everything for his parents and his brother. What happened was that when Jien-Guo and Jien-Tseng passed the exam to go to college, Mr. Ho can only afford to let one son to go to college, so they had a raffle to see who gets to go. Jien-Guo's father told Jien-Guo to write "Go to College" and "Not Go To College" on 2 pieces of paper. But Jien-Guo wrote "Not Go To College" on both pieces of paper. Jien-Guo had his brother choose first. Needless to say, the one he picked was "Not Go To College". Neither Jien-Tseng nor Mr. Ho bothered to look at Jien-Guo's piece of paper. They both had trusted Jien-Guo. So Jien-Guo won the draw and got to go to college. But since college, this secret had been a huge burden to him. So he is in constant need to want to do something more for his family, especially his brother. Xiao-Xi finally can understand why Jien-Guo did the things he did, especially for his family. Xiao-Xi said she would help Jien-Guo. They both agreed to be responsible for Jien-Tseng's children's educational expenses and provide for them. Another Valentine's Day has arrived and Xiao-Xi received the blue roses that are very popular amongst lovers from Jien-guo. But Xiao-Xi was still reluctant to get back with Jien-Guo. The number one reason was her inability to have children due to her habitual miscarriage. She said until Jien-Guo's parents are willing to let go of their wish for Jien-Guo to have children, she will not get back with Jien-Guo. She knew that if Jien-Guo was told by his parents to give up Xiao-Xi because she couldn't have children, he would do what was told by his parents. Meanwhile, Jien-Guo had asked his brother for help in this and Jien-Tseng said he would talk to their father about Xiao-Xi's situation.
Xiao-Xi and Xiao-Hahn talked about finding Professor Goo a companion and they thought Xiao-Xia would be perfect. So Jien-Guo said he would ask Xiao-Xia whether she would be willing to marry Professor Goo, while Xiao-Xi talked to her father. Both Xiao-Xi and Xiao-Hahn are willing to give up their inheritance so Xiao-Xia will have more financial security when Professor Goo passes away. Xiao-Xia would do anything to give her daughter a Beijing education so it didn't take her long for her to decide.
Jien-Guo's father felt bad that Xiao-Xi couldn't have children, so he brought special herbal medicine from home especially for Xiao-Xi. Xiao-Xi and Jien-guo were so touched by everyone that they hugged (and reconciled) in front of Mr. Ho and Professor Goo. Jien-Jia and Xiao-Hahn will be getting married soon as well. The ending credit stated that Xiao-Xi had twins a year later--a boy and a girl.

Ho Jien-Guo 何建国-- married to Xiao Xi. He came from a poor countryside. His family and the people from his village expected a lot from him, whenever something comes up in Beijing.
Jien Jia 简佳-- Editor at a publishing house. Best friend and co-worker of Xiao Xi. She was a "kept woman" (girlfriend of a rich man) for 6 years.
Goo Xiao-Hahn 顾小航-- Xiao Xi's brother
Liu Kai-Rei 刘凯瑞-- wealthy man. Jien Jia's married boyfriend.
Dr. Goo -- Xiao Xi and Xiao Hahn's mother
Mr. Goo -- Xiao Xi and Xiao Hahn's father. A retired university professor
Mr. Ho -- a farmer from the countryside. It takes 1 day of train (2 days by car) ride to get from Beijing to his village. He wants and expects Jien-Guo to pay for everything back home because he sacrificed everything for Jien-Guo to go to college in the city.
Ho Jien-Tseng 何建成 -- Jien-Guo's older brother
Xiao Xia - The Goo's housekeeper. She is from Jien-Guo's village.

Well, after watching 6 episodes of this drama, I did get into it. The cinematography is unbearable--lighting is dark and the images are not sharp (perhaps my glasses' prescription is wrong), but the storyline is understandable and universal to many marriages.
Theme--A marriage is between 2 families and not just between 2 people. The heroine stated many times that her mom warned her about marrying a man from the countryside--no money and she'll have to deal with country pumpkin mentality. Although the heroine knows the situation regarding her country relatives, she still wants to insist on her marriage world as a world for 2. She jokingly said that her apartment in Beijing is like the Beijing office for the Ho village. Her mom, the doctor, also said that "I don't mind treating your husband's immediate family, but treating cousins twice removed is a little too much." As she pointed out, everyone in Jien-Guo's village ended up related to him one way or the other because they still live in the feudal ages.
We see Jien-Guo's pain--he truly loves his wife, but he can't say no to his family. He wants his family to be proud of him, so he takes on the entire village and their demands whenever it has to do with the city.
Xiao Xi did marry a wonderful man--he cooks, he cleans, and he loves her. His only fault is the fact that he would do anything for his family. There is just endless going-ons when it comes to his family.
But as we shall see as the story evolves, the Goo family (although it's seemingly simple) will go through many crisis which, with Jien-Guo's help, was able to overcome.

I think the lead actor and actress are believable as husband and wife. Although story takes place in China, people outside China can relate to some of the issues that a couple might face. But the only difference is that the respect for elders is not as prevalent in the US as in China. I will give more examples of this later (when the kids have gone to bed and I have more time to post).
