Re: C-drama: KSCI 7pm 新结婚时代 (The New Era of Marriage) 11/23/2007-
On a side note, the lead actor, Guo Xiao-Dong, got married early November. His bride is another actress. She is not as famous as he is.

The lead actress, Rene Liu (Liu Ro-Ying) is still single. She was born and raised in Taiwan. She has done more movies than TV dramas. She is based more in China now. According to her file, she went to Cal State Fullerton (don't know if it's for undergrad or graduate studies).
Here is her official website (in Chinese only), but if you are interested in her profile, google her in English.

I really enjoy watching the 2 characters evolve from being friends to more than friends. We rarely see that kind of development in television dramas because that kind of evolution usually takes time and it's difficult to capture that moment.
It's also interesting to learn the colloquial Mandarin spoken by city folks in Beijing.

The policy never stopped. But I believe in the country side, they will allow more than one child per family since they need the man power to farm the land. But in Goo Xiao-Xi's case, I think both her parents must have been fined (or penalized) for having a 2nd child. Only the elites can afford to have more than 1 child. I don't really know the details of this type of penalty. We have a neighbor who is from China and she has 2 kids too. But they are wealthy, so the penalties wouldn't have mattered to them financially.
Maybe someone from China can enlighten us with this.

Then click on "Contact Us" and write them an email. They are usually very good at responding to emails. It's likely that the programming director may not be Asian that he/she may not be sensitive to the difference between a Chinese drama, a Korean drama, or a Japanese drama. Also, it may be cheaper for them to broadcast a C-subbed K-drama than to air a Chinese drama.
But I agree that the acting and the script for this drama is one of the best modern C-dramas that had been produced in the last few years. More of these dramas should be aired.
For those that are interested in China's one-child policy, this show talked about it a little bit. According to Xiao Xia, the Goo's housekeeper, it cost $5000 (RMB) to have a second child. She was talking about another villager who tried to have a son, but after 3 daughters, they are in the poor house. She also divorced her husband because he wanted a son. Xiao Xia did not want to have another child -- 1) it could be a girl, 2) if it's a boy, then her daughter whom she adores would be neglected. It's likely that the boy would be going to college and her daughter would stay behind. She did not want to do that to her daughter. So she aborted a child and divorced her husband--this will allow her husband to have another child with another woman. So her whole life is about her daughter and by working for the Goo's, she will save enough money to have her daughter go to college and make a life for herself.
