C-Drama: KSCI 7pm《牟氏庄园》Mo's Farm (6/18/09 - 8/5/09)

牟氏庄园 "Mo's Farm" has replaced Yung Niang on 6/18/2009. KSCI/LA18 hasn't changed it's programming guide, so I don't know how KSCI/LA18 will translate the title to this drama. I have tentatively called it Mo's Farm. Basically, it's a story of the rise and fall of the biggest landowning family in China during the late Ching Dynasty. It's now a tourist site. It's situated in the Shantong province of China (northeastern China)

Re: C-Drama: KSCI 7pm《牟氏庄园》Mo's Farm (6/18/09 - )

You are in luck. I am watching this show and enjoying it. I missed the first 2 episodes, and have watched ep. 3 to 7 which aired last Friday.

The simple story is that there are 5 families/brothers within the Mo Household (they are the largest landowner in Northeastern China at the end of Ching Dynasty/beginning of the Republic). In Ep. 2-3, the son (and the ruler of the clan) of the oldest brother dies and left an elderly mother, a wife, and 2 small children (a boy and a girl). The tradition of passing the reign to the next generation wouldn't work here because the dead man's son is only 9.

Everyone will be referred to in relation to the deceased man:

1st household: mother of the deceased, wife, son, and daughter
2nd household: 2nd uncle, 2nd auntie, cousin(boy). This uncle is jealous of the first household. But he is more obvious because everyone knows he wants the position of the head of the clan.
3rd household: cousin and his wife. This cousin lacks self confidence and works for the 4th uncle as a farm hand. His wife hasn't been able to conceive.
4th household: 4th uncle, 4th auntie, cousin (boy). This uncle is seemingly nice. He is the only one educated outside the household (so he has seen the world), but he is the most devious of all the uncles.
5th household: 5th uncle, 5th auntie, cousin (boy). A happy-go-lucky uncle who only cares about the theater. His wife is more ambitious than him.

There maybe other children, but they only showed boys in the show.

Stories that have happened so far:
* The wife of the dead man took over where her husband left off and continued with the work at hand--farming. She buried her husband within 3 days (which many relatives thought she was uncaring) and went into the field to supervise (never done for a woman because women are suppose to stay indoors and men take care of the field work. This also caused a lot of gossip).

* The wife gave workers meat to eat so they would work harder which caused 2nd uncle great amount of stress because his farmers aren't working as hard.

* The dead man's son and other uncles' sons are similar in age, so they study together. One day, 2nd uncle's son had an argument with the dead man's son and the 2nd uncle's son stepped on his nephew's cricket, so the dead man's son pushed 2nd uncle' son which caused him to fall backward and hit his head. He went unconscious. So the entire household was in uproar because the dead man's son "killed" the 2nd uncle's son. The 2nd uncle brought his son's body to the 1st household and demanded retribution, but the dead man's son was no where to be found. The mother and wife of the dead man tried to placate the 2nd uncle and his family and asked why they brought the body over to their house. They said the 2nd uncle should get a doctor first. Anyways, the doctor came and treated the boy. The boy woke up and the incident was smoothed over, but the mother and wife were stressed out because they couldn't find their grandson/son. Later, the boy was found and his mother gave him a beating telling him that everyone's eyes are on them for them to fail, so he shouldn't let her down.

* The 2nd uncle called a meeting of the 5 households so they can vote for the new clan leader. Technically, the grandmother was up for the job, but I think in her wisdom, she deferred the candidacy to her daughter-in-law. This way, they wouldn't have to vote again when she passes. The mother and daughter-in-law conferred to figure out how they can win this election, but they figure they only have 40% of winning. Meanwhile, the 2nd uncle is also out there trying to lobby for the position as well.

* Day of the election, the 4th uncle came up with an idea. Yellow bean represent the 1st household and the black bean represent the 2nd household. So the voters only had to put in the bean of their choice. At the revelation, there were 2 yellow beans and 2 black beans and 1 green beans. Everyone was in uproar and was angry at the person who put in the green bean. So they voted again. The 2nd time, there were 3 yellow beans and 2 black beans, so the daughter-in-law of the first household won the clan leader position. Later, we found out it was the 2nd uncle who put in the green bean. He wanted to see how others voted first before he cast his vote. Although it was later revealed that it was the 5th uncle who voted for the 2nd uncle, the 4th uncle went and told the 2nd uncle that he was the one who voted for him (a lie!). So now, the 2nd uncle dislikes the 5th uncle and the nephew from the 3rd household.

* Now that the daughter-in-law of the 1st household becomes the head of the Mo Clan, she told all the other 4 households that since they are family, they shouldn't do things behind each other's backs and hurt each other. All the uncles said she should be more clear about what she is saying because she sounded like she is accusing someone. She said the 2nd uncle moved the border markers (between their 2 pieces of land) 3 feet over to their side. She said although she won't pursue the loss of land (she doesn't want to make a big issue of it causing the outsiders to laugh that the uncle is treating a widow badly), she wants the 2nd uncle to know that she knows. The 2nd uncle denies this and demanded proof. The daughter-in-law said that although both fields planted wheat, but their land was seeded a different species of wheat. She said the truth will reveal itself next spring. So now all the other households know what the 2nd uncle has done.

* This is not the only bad thing the 2nd uncle had done to the 1st household since the head of the clan died. He showed the widow a letter saying that her husband promised them 2 tons of corn. Later the widow showed that the letter was dated when her husband was still in the city (being treated by a doctor). She has the hotel receipt showing that her husband didn't come home after the letter was dated, so he couldn't have written the letter. The uncle mis-dated the letter because he saw the dead man's carriage home one day thinking that he was home. But it was really his servant who came home to get more money back to the city. Everyone now asks the 2nd uncle to return the corn.

* Later, the 2nd uncle made restitution by saying the men under him made the mistakes and did the stuff on their own. Although the daughter-in-law didn't believe him and said that no servants will do things without the master's permission, she let things go for the peace of the family.

* The 4th uncle has the hots for the daughter-in-law. When she was lobbying for the position of the Mo's Clan, she knew he was the key vote, so she went to him and talked to him insinuating that once the 1st household wins the election, he will be the "man" behind the 1st household. The 4th uncle took it as a come-on. So after the election, he went to visit the daughter-in-law one day and tried to rape her. She resisted, luckily, she had told her maid to get the 4th auntie to come over beforehand. So just when things got heated, the 4th auntie heard and saw what happened and put a stop to the "rape". The 4th uncle now hates the daughter-in-law and is plotting with the 2nd uncle to topple the 1st household's power.

* Ep. 7, the mother and wife of the dead man discussed the upcoming Moon Festival Celebration. Since it was a successful harvest year, they want to do a big party showing everyone that the 2 women are able to handle the situation and make their families stronger. They decided to pay for the party on their own, but they want to invite the head government official of their county to their party. Typically, the 2nd uncle is the liaison between the government and their family, but he now refused to help saying that since he is not the head of the household, he is in no position to invited the head official from the government. So the women decided it was best that the daughter-in-law (as the clan's leader) goes and invite the head government official. As expected, the head government official turned her down claiming that the Moon Festival is when family celebrates together, so he plans to celebrate it with his own family. Without the government official's presence, the Mo's party wouldn't be as prestigious. So now the women of the 1st household have to resolve this problem somehow.

Please post if you have any questions.

Re: C-Drama: KSCI 7pm《牟氏庄园》Mo's Farm (6/18/09 - )

The boy was in hiding in the family's stock room because he thought he had killed his uncle (by pushing him). He got bitten by a non-poisonous snake (not sure why that was put in the script if the snake was not poisonous.)

I don't remember the massage scene.

Monday's episode:

* The 4th uncle's affair with his wife's maid was found out by the 2nd uncle's wife's maid. She went and told the 2nd aunt and the 2nd aunt told her husband, right at the Moon Festival opera. The daughter-in-law (leader of the clan) had to tell everyone to quit pursuing the matter because all the dignitaries are in their compound. She doesn't want the 2nd uncle to make it so loud that everyone knows about it. The 2nd uncle wanted to sell the maid to the brothel, but the daughter-in-law told her to leave and never to return to their city. The 4th uncle went after the girl and gave her some money (it showed that he wasn't heartless after all).

Tuesday's episode:
* The 4th uncle hired a teacher for all the boys in the family. He met the teacher at a restaurant after feeling dejected when his affair with the maid ended.
* The 4th uncle and the 2nd uncle made up. The 4th auntie made it happen by inviting the 2nd uncle to her house for dinner.
* The daughter-in-law found out although this year was a successful harvest year, they made less money because everyone is lowering their prices to clear the inventory. Her wheat is selling at $5 per bushel. She found out that the flour dealer in the city is selling the wheat at $6.50 per bushel, she decided that she could cut off the middleman by selling directly to the flour dealer in the city for $6/bushel. But she needed to get all the uncles together for this to work. They would have to pool their inventories together and sell the wheat as a consortium, rather than individually as they used to do. Initially, the 2nd uncle thought the daughter-in-law was trying to control him, but after the daughter-in-law analyzed the situation and informed them that they'll make more money this way, as a group, they all agreed to participate in the daughter-in-law's deal.

Re: C-Drama: KSCI 7pm《牟氏庄园》Mo's Farm (6/18/09 - )

Sorry that I haven't kept up with the translation.

Here is what's been happening to the Mo Family:

The 3rd uncle's son went crazy and died. Before the 3rd uncle died, he gave the 4th uncle the deeds to his land and entrusted the care of his young son to the 4th uncle with the promise that when the 3rd uncle's son grows up, the 4th uncle will split the assets in half and give the 1/2 to the 3rd uncle's son.

But the deceitful 4th uncle treated 3rd uncle's son like a servant. 3rd uncle's son never got any respect from anyone. One day, the 3rd uncle's grandson got sick and needed $200 to buy medicine to keep him alive, so 3rd uncle's son went to beg 4th uncle for $200 (he said he will pay him back later), but the 4th uncle refused. In desperation, 3rd uncle's son tried to slash 4th uncle with a knife, but 4th uncle still refused to give 3rd uncle's son any money. Humiliated and defeated, 3rd uncle's son went berserk and was never the same again. Meanwhile, 3rd uncle's daughter-in-law took her son to the Head of Mo's Household for help, so her son was saved. But that news didn't get to 3rd uncle's son after he went crazy. Everyone tried to keep the news that 3rd uncle's son went crazy from his wife, but eventually she found out.

Now, the daughter-in-law of the 3rd uncle is insisting that she needs to see to it that the assets are divided from the 4th uncle's family. But the 4th uncle was only willing to give her $1500 worth of land. He said that the 3rd uncle left a lot of debt when he died which the 4th uncle had to pay back. So there are only $3000 left in the family account, 1/2 of which belongs to the 3rd uncle's family. The Head of the Household didn't believe the 4th uncle but she lacked proof to call him false. Eventually, the maid of the dead grandma presented the Head of the Household a box containing the original contract showing that the 3rd uncle gave the 4th uncle $12,000 when he died with specific instruction to give $6000 to his son when he becomes an adult. So now, that's the proof everyone had been looking for. So the 2 families' assets can now be divided equitably favoring the 3rd uncle's son's family. Too bad the 3rd uncle's son never lived to see that happen.

Everyone in the Household looked badly on the 4th uncle because everyone believed that he caused the death of the 2nd uncle and the 3rd uncle's son. The 2nd uncle died because the Mo's family was late in giving the bandits the ransom they were asking for. The 4th uncle had the money but he didn't want to cough it up, so the Head of the Household had to figure out a way to get more money (which took time). The 2nd uncle was killed while he was under the care of the bandits. Although the bandits didn't kill the 2nd uncle, the 2nd uncle was killed by 2 hoodlums. They were the sons of the man who refused to sell land to the Mo's so they can build a dam for their land. The Head of the Household were able to set up a scheme whereby the son lost a bet to gambling, thus the Mo Family was able to gain the rights to that piece of land. So the sons hated the Mo's.

Just when people are getting over the deaths of the 2nd uncle and 3rd uncle's son, a large group of bandits sent words ahead to warn the Mo Family that they are coming for a visit. In the past, the family were able to "buy" them off peacefully, but 3-4 days before these bandits are due to arrive, they found out that bandits killed everyone at their last stop (another wealthy family). So the head of the Mo household decided that everyone would leave the premise and take refuge in the city. The 2nd uncle's son decided to stay at the farm to defend it with a team of men that he trained to protect the farm. So everyone left the farm except the servants and the self-trained team of farmhands.

The 2nd uncle's son was killed by one of the men who killed his father. When news traveled back to the family in the city, they were devastated. While at the city, the younger generation had a ball getting to see the outside world. Then they received news that the bandits left Mo's farm (because there wasn't anything there for them to take). Everyone returned home but the younger generation was never the same again.

The head of household wants her children to get married. The daughter is betrothed to a budding industrialist in the city and the son is betrothed to the daughter of the head of police at the city. But the son is in love with the girl that his mom adopted (she is the granddaughter of the late loyal headmaster) and he is trying to figure out a way so he can be with the girl he loves. The son of the 5th uncle left home to join the army.

The daughter-in-law of the 2nd uncle found out that she is pregnant to the joy of everyone in Mo's farm, so now there is hope in the 2nd uncle's household.

The head of the Mo Household wants to pass on the torch to her son, so he has to get married first (he's 18 BTW).

Please feel free to post questions if you have any.
