C-Drama:KSCI Noon 《女人不哭》 Silent Tear (7/8/09-8/21/09)

The Legend of Bruce Lee ended on July 7 and it is replaced by a 34-episode Chinese-production drama, Silent Tear. The Chinese title is "Women Don't Cry".

I saw the first episode and it started with an earthquake where 3 kids were orphaned and were then picked up by their maternal uncle after months of living in tents.

The storyline is predictable in that the orphans would be inevitably be badly treated by their aunt who favors her own son over the orphans. But for some reason, I don't have any sympathy towards the orphans, even when they are in positions for creating tear-jerking moments.

For example, in one scene, the orphaned boy stole some sesame oil from the aunt. I know the aunt is being stingy not to give any sesame oil to the boy to try. Her reason being that everything was rationed and before the orphaned kids transfer their household to their household, she doesn't want to give them anything extra. So when the aunt found out the boy stole, she punished him, but the boys' sisters try to protect him. As a mother, I think the aunt had a cause to punish the boy and the older sister shielding the boy would only make the boy's behavior worse. The older sister's reason for shielding the boy is that he is the "supporting" beam of the family name and the night before the earthquake, their mother said how important the boy is to the family. I just hate the pro-boy stance that a lot of Chinese families adhere to.

Anyways, so when the orphaned children huddle together and cried because the aunt punished the boy, I can't help but feel sorry for how that boy will turn out when he grows up. Being orphans doesn't excuse one for doing the wrong thing.

I will keep watching it until I can't stand it anymore.

The 7pm Chinese drama, Mo's Farm, is a much better show, so watch that when you can.

Not a bad drama. A bit contrived at certain points in the drama, but a tear-jerker nevertheless! I liked it.
