I think that Younger Man did quite well in Japan, if it wasn't, they would stop with the older/younger dramas, but they didn't, so it must have done wll.

this page is pretty neat. I didn't know we could see a rankings list of the nhk dramas. i feel like i missed out since i haven't seen churasan. looks like it was a pretty great drama. what are the chances it will air again? when was it last aired?

as for one of the dramas, mikey, that you mentioned...."asuka" - I've been wanting to see that for some time. how could it have been that boring if you taped 8 cassettes worth of it? geez. if you don't want them, i'll take them! lol emoticon

emoticon At the time, I was working in Burbank, and had to leave for work at 6:00 am every weekday morning - so I set the VCR to automatically record the NHK morning drama all week long so I could watch it over the weekend when I had more time. And, when each tape got full, I just filed it away, rather than record over it.

But, like I said, you didn't miss that much. The storyline wasn't that different from Honmamon, except that Asuka made Japanese confectionaries, and Konoha made Japanese shojin dishes.

I think Churasan was the series that ran just before Honmamon - meaning it ran last year. Churasan was quite good. I doubt they'll ever re-run it, though emoticon but there was talk of a "Churasan 2" in the works. Sure hope it comes to America someday.

Churasan 2 has already aired in Japan and Hawaii, and DVDs are available.

Churasan 3 is airing in October.

For more info, see the Churasan thread.

Re: Useful J-Drama Links

Actually, Churasan aired before Sakura, which was the drama before Honmamon. So it was quite a while back.

posticon Eyeing Nikkei: Portrayals of Japanese Americans on an NHK TV Drama

The paper “Eyeing Nikkei: Portrayals of Japanese Americans on an NHK TV Drama” is an interesting read. It focuses mostly on the series Sakura and the varied reactions to it, discussing the importance of language to those of Japanese descent living in America, some background on the asadoroma genre, and many other things.

Re: Useful J-Drama Links

Funny, but I subscribed to NHK about a month ago (my Time Warner has TV Japan, which is basically NHK in America, in Japanese) and a Churasan series was airing daily. Is this the fabled Churasan 3?

wow! I didn't know that they will be showing Love Storm out here No. Cal. It's actually not a show that I wanted to see, but I heard it was good.

The list of links are really helpful, though some of them are in Japanese.
