Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Thanks for the great front page, Bubu! I'm very relieved to see that the Taigas will be continued on UTB, despite the recent cutbacks of Japanese programming on LA-18.

On the taiga itself, it looks really good. I didn't watch the last taiga, Furiin Kazan, because I was really tired of stories from the Sengoku period and hearing about Nobunaga, Monkey, and Ieyasu - but its a differnet historical period that is being covered in this drama (not to mention a really interesting one) so I'm looking forward to it.

This basically covers the same period as in Shinsengumi (late Edo Period - from about the 1840s to the Restoration in 1868) but it seems to go deeper into the Meiji Restoration from what I read in the summary. It will be really interesting to look at this change from the perspective of a woman living in the Inner Castle of Edo.

Looking forward to it!

I'm looking forward to the character of Kazu-no-miya Chikako, the younger sister of Emperor Komei who married one of the final shoguns. She was part of a last ditch effort to unite the shogunate and the imperial court. It'll be interesting to see how she is portrayed.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

As usual, thank you very much for the exceptional and fine front page for this drama, Bubu. You provide wonderful references and I find I frequently come back to your front pages when I'm trying to look up an actor or program for which I cannot remember the names (which is most of the time LOL!).

The actress playing the lead surely is cute and refreshing looking.

I don't know how much I will enjoy this one, but I will certainly give it a prolonged try. Some of the previews were distressing to me. As a woman, I find it unpleasant to watch the painful plight forced upon innocent girls and women who have no choice or means of escape and survival elsewhere. However, women are usually very resilient creatures and make the best of whatever situation is forced upon them. Hopefully, this will be infrequent and overshadowed by the majority of the drama.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I didn't catch any of the previews, but I hope its not like Komyou ga tsuji. I remember the first episode where Chiyo -- as a little girl -- was kidnapped and had to go through all those horrible incidents (I think she was almost sold as a slave) before she met her future husband's mother who took her in. I think that was in the first couple of episodes). It was a really depressing start.

By the way -- here is the opening for Atsu-hime. Beautiful, but it does seem to be sad.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Episode 1 - The Child of Destiny (Part 1 of 2)
aired February 9, 2008

Well, Episode 1 just ended. We saw probably less than half of it, since UTB seems to always choose the day that a drama debuts in order to run special one-time programs (they did it last week with the premiere episode of Jigoku no sata mo yome shidai as well) so we didn't really get to see too much of the debut episode. But so far, so good!

I really like Princess Katsu's actress (the little girl). She will give out the most poignant facial expressions, I think its really one of those expressions only a little kid can give out. She had it when her mother was telling her that a samurai woman must be strong and be able to deal with all situations.

The time period we're dealing with right now is in the 1830s-1840s, when the Tokugawa regime in Edo is still intact but is really losing a lot of their influence that they once held throughout Japan. The Shimazu clan ruled the southernmost areas of Japan (including the Ryukyu Islands aka. Okinawa) and were one of the most influential clans during this period.

Remember the retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa from Yo****sune, anybody? Well, he's back as the financial advisor! Looks like he still has that sneakiness factor that his other role did in Yo****sune. I can tell he's going to be more than difficult to deal with. In the end, the peasants get hit with the bulk of the financial reforms even though they're not the ones causing it. Many famines occured during the early 1800s, and yet the peasants are still being "bullied", so to speak.

Well, its a bit too early to give a concrete opinion on the new taiga, but so far so good!

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I don't like Taiga dramas. However out of deference to Aoi Miyazaki I watched the first episode. Since she did not appear yet, I will watch a few more and see if Miyazaki can overcome my dislike of Taigas and suck me in to watching this hmmm for 52 weeks???? At least so far they did show more than the usual endless closeups of bedraggled unkempt barely legible brutes as in other Taigas. That's a good thing.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

It was quite a jolt to pull myself forward from the Tokagawa and the Shingen and Uesagi days. I even was still immersing myself in Oda Nobunaga on the Wiki pages. those were certainly the days of wars and change.
Now to come into the 1800's is strange. Japan was still a mysterious country and I have to keep reminding myself that nothing changed culturally there even up to the later part of the 1800 period. I have a lovely book which was about that later time and it includes a visit of the then Prince of Wales (later uncrowned King Edward and dubbed Duke of Windsor. He was about twenty years old and his trip was so stilted because it was a state affair. He and his retinue were escorted constantly and there is a black and white photo of them all in Japanese robes

Other photos of the general populace also show people wearing Japanese daily attire. .... so interesting seeing photos of that time.

I think this drama will be very interesting and lively.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Oh yes, it really is a change of pace from the last two dramas which were still about the change of power from Nobunaga to Hideyoshi to Ieyasu. In a way though, as Peg mentioned, the culture hasn't changed much for the last two hundred years. The government was still for the most part run the same way in 1841 (which is where I think last night's episode left off) as it was in 1616, when Ieyasu passed away.

I also like how the drama's emphasis is not going to be politics as much it is the life of Princess Katsu (presumably the future Atsu-hime).

Really interesting to read about the Duke of Windsor and his visit to Japan, Peg. He's another personality who I've always wanted to learn more about. If only Britain had taiga dramas! I would love to watch one on his life, what he went through with his marriage and then during the war as well.
