Thanks for the links, Bubu! emoticon

I had really liked Matsuzaka Keiko since we saw her in the 2005 taiga Yo****sune, where she played the role of Kiyomori's widow excellently. That's why I was really happy when I found out she had a main role in Atsu-hime too, as Ikushima. I've only seen her in taiga roles before, so it was very refreshing to see some her musical work. I loved the song Ai no Suichuuka - has a very distinct sound to it. The melody is catchy too, so this is definitely one of my new enka favorites.

Fun with Computers
Thought this was pretty cool... details on how they used C.G. to create some of the Edo Castle scenes seen in last night's episode.

That's so cool - the power of CGI animation is incredible. One of my favorite scenes in last night's episode was when Atsu and the procession from Satsuma marched into Edo... the way they re-created those town scenes was great. A glimpse of what Tokyo looked like 150 years ago.

I willl have to look it up but I think my maternal Grandfather was alive when Atsuhime was in Edo and influencing things politically. I find it fascinating that Japan was so closed to the rest of the world and still not at all modern. However they must have had cameras because there are pictures of Japan scenes and the people.

Oh yeah, there were cameras. I think once Japan was opened to the west in the 1850s, the foreigners bought cameras and took pictures of life in Japan during this time. Its very interesting because it was the final years of feudalism in Japan, so the pictures from the period really caught a glimpse into what life was like in Japan for centuries during its isolation.

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I've had a nagging question that I don't know if anyone can answer: What do the women in the Satsuma Ooku do when there is no Lord or Lady around? It seems that all of Lord Nariakira's family is in Edo. I don't know why by I was surprised that he had two or three concubines.

The reason why Nariakira's family had to stay in Edo was because of the Tokugawa policy called the "Alternate Attendance System". With this system, the family of any daimyo (like the Shimazu clan) would be residing in Edo away from their hometown, and the lord of that family would have to rotate between his daimyo (in this case Satsuma) and Edo. This was to limit chances of rebellion - as these journeys would take both a lot of time and money. The lord was never in one place for too long of a time, and his family was pretty much kept in hostage right under the nose of the shogun. This system did work for almost two centuries though. But that's why all of Nariakira's family and the Ooku are just residing in Edo and not in Satsuma.

Thanks for re-posting the chart and info, Bubu! I just realized that Nariakira's retainer (the one Atsu always used to call "Sensei" - the one who is going to be sent off to Ryukyu) is Naogoro's paternal uncle!
