I've had a nagging question that I don't know if anyone can answer: What do the women in the Satsuma Ooku do when there is no Lord or Lady around? It seems that all of Lord Nariakira's family is in Edo. I don't know why by I was surprised that he had two or three concubines.I think that the lord would be involved in political affairs while the women were being: petty, backstabbing, gossiping, harassing, and *****y(there, I said it) smile!!!

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Thank you so much Bubu for posting the chart and info. It was interesting to see all the different ranks of women in the Ooku. I could see how this could become extremely expensive, besides the clothes and food, etc.
Thanks Greg for the explanation about the Alternate Attendance System but I still wonder what Hirokawa and the maidservants in the Satsuma Castle do when Nariakira is in Edo since they don't have any lady or lord to serve.

I'm guessing they probably just take care of household matters while the lord is out. That, and gossip! As the saying goes... when the cat is away the mice are out to play!I think Hirokawa went as far as the dock and then went back to the castle since she's the head lady there. I think you're probably right about that. I think the Satsuma Ooku probably had a much easier job compared to the Edo one since Lord Nariakira wasn't there half the time and they don't have to tend to his family almost ever. No wonder Hirokawa was initialy so cranky with Atsu hime! She probably had never had to work that hard in her life!

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Thank you so much Bubu for the list of books! That one titled "Women in Medieval Japan" looks especially intriguing!

Thanks Bubu for posting up the list of books! I'm interested in the one called "Recreating Japanese Women: 1600 - 1945", it probably deals with this late Tokugawa period and also how the role of many women changed with the coming of Westernization.
Speaking of books, yesterday I was at the Little Tokyo Kinokuniya and I saw a whole section of Atsu-hime books. I had seen something an "Atsu-hime display" like this at the Torrance Asahiya on the corner of Hawthorne and Sepulveda, so I guess all the major Japanese bookstores are doing it. They had the novel that the drama is based on, and also some other books on the late Edo period. I bought a pretty cool photo/interview book with behind the scene pictures and cast interviews, and at the end there are summaries/pictures of the early episodes.
I'll try to post up scans later on.
Meanwhile, Episode 14 airs tomorrow!Hello
I work not too far from asahiya bookstore and I go there once a week to buy japanese idol magazines and tv guide. I have a photo/interview book when "Shinsengumi" was on channel 18.
