This taiga is a sheer joy. It is holding me close as did 'Hojo Tokimune' a few years ago. I would love to see that one again. Atsu is such an intiguing real woman in history and I think the actress is doing well in playing this role. Obviously she is prettier than the real princess but at least she is not just a pretty face. Indeed she is a very disciplined actress.
I think the writers must have had a field day with this drama because the actual history must have been filled with splendid actions.
I could watch this for a long time but at the same time I hate to think it will ever end.

you can see "HOJO TOKIMUNE" again on a website called "aznv.tv. like crunchyroll, this website has streaming japanese, korea and chinese drama. All you need to do is sign up and download the "winamp". I was looking at the all japanese dramas and I found that Kamakura dorama.

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Hojo Tokimune really is a great taiga drama. It may be interesting for some people to see how Tokimune dealt with the Mongolians who were also trying to pressure Japan to submit to their policies.
Does anyone know if the videos on the aznv.tv are subtitled?

#16 - Cherry Blossoms Amidst Tumult

This drama continues to be my favorite taiga so far... and it seems to be getting better and progressing nicely. Atsu's marriage finally seems to be set in stone - now that the Old Lord Nariaki and finally the shogun have consented to it in their own ways. Lots of hard work and credit goes to Atsu, Ikushima, Nariakira, and even his wife Princess Hisa. Without their work it could not happen.
Princess Hisa is a very lonely person, hiding behind the cloth that covers her face. She must have lived a solitary life, since most of the time her husband Nariakira was away in Satsuma, and she must not have been able to see much of him. Back then, the lords had many concubines, and the narrator mentioned that none of Nariakira's children were mothered by Princess Hisa, so he must have kept many concubines (how hurtful for Hisa.. who had to live alongside them in the Satsuma Ooku.)
The scene where Atsu met with the Lord of Mita, Nariaki, was so beautiful with the scenery. The cherry blossoms matched Atsu's composure -- while the cherry blossoms lightly fell, Atsu stood composed and ready to await any challenge that she might face. Another favorite scene of mine with the cherry blossoms was when Nariakira was drinking sake with Princess Hisa watching the evening cherry flowers. A cherry blossom lightly fell into Hisa's cup, after which she proceeded to remove the white cloth hiding her face. Beautiful scene.
Back in Satsuma... Naogoro and Ochika have bonded it seems. She gave him the strength to move on after Atsu left Satsuma, maybe even taking her place (though I doubt she can ever replace Atsu in Naogoro's heart. That might be the reason why he became so ecstatic when he received word at the end of the episode that he can finally go to Edo.) I wonder why Nariakira called Naogoro to Edo at a time like this when he already has Saigo there... I wonder if he wants Naogoro to take part in the wedding arrangements now that the wedding plans seem to be set in stone? We'll see.
Episode 17 airs next week! This is turning out to be excellent.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Ohh, I loved those cherry blossom scenes, too. Yo****sune had a number of beautifully artistic backgrounds, as well. I so loved the Yo****sune night scene on the bridge with the huge full moon on the right and the lush sakura tree in full bloom on the left that I have ever since used it as my desktop wallpaper.
Atsu-hima does have so many quiet scenes of beauty, completely filling up the senses. Reminds me of the JAL (Japan Airline) calendar. I don't know if they still issue it, but a former client used to bring me one yearly. I've never seen such a beautiful collection of Japanese Art (life is art in Japan, it seems). Each photo was more than worthy of being framed. That's what Atsu-hime reminds me of. The story is lovely, intriguing, heartwrenching, but above all that, we are treated to the visual feast of Nature and Humanity found only in Japanese arts.
Iesada's mom. Maybe I missed how clever she was—I had a slightly different take on her. I saw the genetic line from which Iesada had popped out and the mirky waters into which Atsu-hime will soon find herself. Another functioning "looney toones" if ever there was one. However, Mom's "loving" the crunchy rice cake may have been deliberate, I must admit. Or, his rice-cake decision of taking a wife may have just been a random role of the rice cracker, so to speak. Watching Iesada stomp that rice cracker to smithereens cracked me up. I'm surprised he didn't burn his little footsie. (Love that actor.) Though the camera lingering on the smashed pieces a couple of times has to be a symbolic message.
Atsu-hime saves the day again—twice! First she wins over Mita, which seemed highly unlikely in reality. Any powerful man with such an inflated ego isn't likely to instantly change from offended rage to amusement by a young princess. Then she acts as marriage counselor for Nariakira and Lady Hisa and voilé—a difficult 30-year marriage is fixed up by an invitation to drink on the veranda while watching the moon and blossoms. I think the real secret to Atsu is....
And here comes poor Naogoro to Edo. What a bittersweet relationship for the both of them, I suppose. Still, Naogoro will rather spend his days on the sideline watching over Atsu than anywhere else, it seems. Another Kansuke—but I hope Naogoro at least has some children in his lifetime.
Ochika – I have been confused about where she fits in. But if I correctly read the original chart on the front page of this thread, isn't she Naogoro's younger sister? There seemed to be some undertones last night that there might be a relationship developing between the two of them—but I guess I read it all wrong.
Question: I'm wondering about Mita's son (?), the warrior guy we've seen a couple of times. Now the Abe Brain Trust is looking to slip him in as the next Shogun. If Iesada should be removed or meet his sudden demise, could the Mita son take Atsu as his own? Or would that be forbidden? Maybe as a concubine, but not as the official wife? Maybe he and Atsu are destined to be enemies. I seem to recall he was put off by her the first time around—or somehow it was a negative experience. Can't remember.
Yes, many thanks to you, Bubu for the charts. I have finally printed them out and they help immeasurably.
