Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
#18 - Nariakira's Secret Order

Last night's episode was jam-packed with information and really moved rapidly. The earthquake occurred in late 1855, and Atsu-hime's departure for Edo Castle that we saw last night was set for November 11th, 1856. So I guess over a year passed throughout last night's episode. But it was a very nice episode -- I liked seeing a lot of loose ends resolved and a preparation for Atsu's agenda in the Edo Ooku.
Nariakira seems adamant about his goal of restructuring and modernizing the shogunate, as well as in getting Shimazu influence within the Tokugawa shogunate. In order for this to happen, he either needs Atsu to bear Shogun Iesada an heir or for her to persuade Iesada and the Ooku to appoint Yoshinobu (the son of the Lord of Mito) as heir apparent since he supports the Shimazu and their allies. I guess the marriage negotiations were hurried since the Senior Councillor Abe resigned his post. I remember them mentioning that his successor, Lord Hotta, was against Nariakira's faction (as well as Yoshinobu and the Lord of Mito) so they needed Atsu in the Ooku to balance power and influence.
It must be a cold and lonely world for Atsu to transfer to. I am glad at least Ikushima will be at her side to help guide her like she always has since their days in Satsuma. I am glad Nariakira's wife finally opened up to Atsu. Though they didn't know each other for very long, I think Atsu already shares a close bond with her. And then the parting with Nariakira. They didn't exchange many words as Atsu boarded the palanquin, but I think her slight head bow signified that she understood her duty.
I'm glad that Naogoro and Ochika are together. Now that they've talked things out, it seems they will enjoy their life together. Naogoro seems to be making a genuine effort at forgetting Atsu. He understands that her marriage is pretty much set in stone at this point.
The senior lady from the Edo Ooku who was introduced at the end (Takiyama I think was her name) seemed so cold. I hope the others aren't like her! LOL!
Episode 19 airs next week!

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
I was so pleased to see actor Takahashi Hideki, who plays Nariakira, in modern dress. He is in the new Takuya Kimura drama'Change'. I think he is playing a member of the Japanese gvrnment in the opposing party but he seems to admire Kimura san as the Prime Minister and they get along in their characters.
He is a very imposing man both in Samurai robes and in modern suit.

Maya Kyoko plays Okubo Fuku. But I can't recall seeing her in this drama. Does any one know? I'm curious as I remember her from Churasan as Fumiya kun's mother. She was in an early episode, I think it was episode 4. She was the one who told Okatsu not to come back to visit the Okubo residence.
