Yep, she was on in the early episodes where she played the role of Okubo's mother.

I don't think we've seen her in a major role for quite a while. I believe the last time we saw her was a couple of episodes ago, during the scene when Okubo's father finally returned home to Satsuma from exile (he was jailed by the Old Lord Shimazu Narioki, and as promised -- was freed by Nariakira). I think we saw her in that scene where Okubo's father returned home.

Atsu-hime #19 - Entrance into the Ooku

Interesting and well done episode! We're still in November of 1856, but Atsu-hime has finally entered the Edo Ooku after three years of waiting. I think the reason this episode is important is because it introduces us to the many people in the Ooku as well as some of the customs that Atsu has to get used to. The Ooku -- what a stressful and difficult place to live in!

That scene at the end was hilarious! Shogun Iesada running around playing hide-and-go seek with a mask on... and then handing the mask to Atsu-hime! The look of horror on both Ikushima's and the head maid's face when they found out it was the Shogun was what made it so funny! Poor Atsu -- after wanting to meet the Shogun so much and even envisioning in her head that she is marrying the "best man in Japan", its too bad she has to pretty much realize he isn't what she thought he was. I guess we'll see more of her reaction in the next episode.

I liked the meeting between the Shogun's mother Honjuin and Atsu. Though Atsu is a kind person and is generally nice to all she meets, I think she has an ulterior motive in being extra kind to her mother-in-law. Maybe Atsu realizes that she has to take extra care in getting on Honjuin's good side so that she can have an easier time to convince the Ooku to make Yoshinobu the heir to Iesada.

Takiyama, the Chief Maidservant... Ikushima was right when she called her "insolent"! What a cold character she is! I think the only person who was warm with the Princess was the concubine Shiga. I wonder how Atsu will react when she finds out just who Shiga really is...

And back in Satsuma. Looks like Naogoro still wants to go back to Edo -- even though he is now the lord of the Komatsu family and is married. Too bad Ochika overheard him.

All the customs of the Ooku remind me of the palace of Louis XIV in 18th century France -- and the endless amount of rituals the French monarchy had from morning to night. It must be the same. Atsu looks like she is going to reform it though... she's taking every order Nariakira gave her to "reform the Shogunate from within" seriously.

Episode 20 airs next week!

LOL, I love it! I think the funniest part was when the camera zeroed in on her face as her jaw dropped. So far she is the funniest person in the Edo Ooku (even more so than Iesada's mom!)

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I really enjoyed this episode. I had no idea that they had so many women living there with so many stringent customs. No wonder the Lord of Mito is always harping at them to be more frugal. I guess they can start with saving some of that fish and having Atsu hime change her clothes less!

I was feeling sorry for Atsu hime the whole episode, especially when she was talking about the shogun. I kept thinking "If she only knew..."

I also keep wondering about Atsuhime and her husband to be. I think it has been somewhat of a tragedyat she was removed out of the possibility of marrying her childhood friend Naogoro, she had not then realised that she could love him that way so maybe it is just as well she went to Edo with hope in her heart.

It is just possible that the Shogun will be a source of amusement to her for awhile, altho as she grows, she will find him lacking. At least he is not a monster and I think he will be good to her. I certainly hope so.
Her role will be to changethings in the Ooku and also politically.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Seeing that Princess Atsu is the free spirit she is, I feel a little sorry for the Shogun! I can't imagine Atsu containing herself for very long. Shogun will either love her or hate her. I can see her becoming the main force in his life—she's sure got more ***** [ooops, better not say that!] than he does! Maybe he can sit around and cook rice crackers for her on his hibachi. Though he is non-conformist enough to free up Atsu, too, on occasion. Those two could make a lot of mischief together if let on the loose!

The "sole concubine" is bound to be a huge problem....

Question: If Atsu produces a male heir, and she has already maneuvered Shogun into naming the other guy as his successor, what happens to Atsu's son?

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Do you think that Atsu will have a normal marriage with the Shogun?

It seems to me that his concubine is a very experienced woman and is somewhat like the mistresses that the Duke of Windsor had before he married his last mistress. They were all married woman and experienced and he needed a lot of 'help'
I surmise that the Shogun is very capable but he obviously is somewhat lacking in the mature mental growth. this would be fine for a concubine but I think not very satisfactory for a wife. I would imagine that Atsu will leave him to the other woman most of the time but use her position for her more interesting political ideas.

Atsu is a very intelligent young woman and I think will be a force to contend with when she meets and greets the other important daimyos and government ministers.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Oh, I agree that there will be no "normal" marriage between Atsu and the Shogun. The "sole concubine" looks older than the Shogun, but I can't judge the age of these characters very well. Wallis Simpson and the other mistresses are a good example, Peg! emoticon Edward certainly never seemed a responsible, adult man in too many aspects of his life. (Here's a bit of trivia. Because Edward VIII was so short, neckties were too long and made him look clownish. Consequently, he devised a way of looping the tie over twice, instead of once as was the style then. It shortened the tie and became known as the Windsor Knot.)

Even though Atsu is not experienced in ever so many ways, she's miles ahead of the Shogun when it comes to having her head screwed on right and knowing how to win over people. (Or so it would seem.) But she's going to have to have some contact with him if she's going to convince him to name a particular successor... not to mention having his child.

Too bad her dreams of a respectable, satisfying marriage have just been shot to pieces as she watches him cavort about the garden like a ninny. Looks like she's doomed to leading a life of duty instead. But, that probably isn't much different from most other wives of the aristocracy. They have position and perhaps a son that will succeed the father, but it seems most of the wives have been replaced by younger flesh or a favorite concubine and must find their happiness in another form.
