J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
I really enjoyed this episode. I had no idea that they had so many women living there with so many stringent customs. No wonder the Lord of Mito is always harping at them to be more frugal. I guess they can start with saving some of that fish and having Atsu hime change her clothes less!
I was feeling sorry for Atsu hime the whole episode, especially when she was talking about the shogun. I kept thinking "If she only knew..."

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
I also keep wondering about Atsuhime and her husband to be. I think it has been somewhat of a tragedyat she was removed out of the possibility of marrying her childhood friend Naogoro, she had not then realised that she could love him that way so maybe it is just as well she went to Edo with hope in her heart.
It is just possible that the Shogun will be a source of amusement to her for awhile, altho as she grows, she will find him lacking. At least he is not a monster and I think he will be good to her. I certainly hope so.
Her role will be to changethings in the Ooku and also politically.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Do you think that Atsu will have a normal marriage with the Shogun?
It seems to me that his concubine is a very experienced woman and is somewhat like the mistresses that the Duke of Windsor had before he married his last mistress. They were all married woman and experienced and he needed a lot of 'help'
I surmise that the Shogun is very capable but he obviously is somewhat lacking in the mature mental growth. this would be fine for a concubine but I think not very satisfactory for a wife. I would imagine that Atsu will leave him to the other woman most of the time but use her position for her more interesting political ideas.
Atsu is a very intelligent young woman and I think will be a force to contend with when she meets and greets the other important daimyos and government ministers.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Oh, I agree that there will be no "normal" marriage between Atsu and the Shogun. The "sole concubine" looks older than the Shogun, but I can't judge the age of these characters very well. Wallis Simpson and the other mistresses are a good example, Peg! Edward certainly never seemed a responsible, adult man in too many aspects of his life. (Here's a bit of trivia. Because Edward VIII was so short, neckties were too long and made him look clownish. Consequently, he devised a way of looping the tie over twice, instead of once as was the style then. It shortened the tie and became known as the Windsor Knot.)
Even though Atsu is not experienced in ever so many ways, she's miles ahead of the Shogun when it comes to having her head screwed on right and knowing how to win over people. (Or so it would seem.) But she's going to have to have some contact with him if she's going to convince him to name a particular successor... not to mention having his child.
Too bad her dreams of a respectable, satisfying marriage have just been shot to pieces as she watches him cavort about the garden like a ninny. Looks like she's doomed to leading a life of duty instead. But, that probably isn't much different from most other wives of the aristocracy. They have position and perhaps a son that will succeed the father, but it seems most of the wives have been replaced by younger flesh or a favorite concubine and must find their happiness in another form.
