Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Thanks Bubu! Haha yeah, I had forgotten Utahashi's name. She and Lady Honjuin are truly eccentric... now I can see who Iesada took after, LOL!

I also thought that scene with Ikushima showing Atsu that shunga scroll was hilarious! How awkward it must have been for Ikushima to show poor Atsu that! emoticon

But yeah, this taiga is my favorite so far. I agree, it does a good job of moving the plot along as well as adding an element of comedy into the story. Hopefully it'll stay this good!

I’ve been away, for the Board, for almost a year, but have kept up with the dramas! My name says it all – LOL! class blockquote The "sole concubine" looks older than the Shogun,I thought the same thing.

It looks like this should be a good "cat fight" between Atsu and the concubine. Its great that we should have a historical drama with a strong female character (Atsu).

Bubu13, thank you for your hard work in your pre-show posts and the floor plan.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Welcome back, CantGetEnough! Glad to have you back!

That is true, the concubine O-shiga does look considerably older than both Shogun Iesada and Atsu. I remember during the episode they mentioned that Shogun Iesada was 33 years old. Since Atsu was born in 1835 and it is now 1856, she is only in her early 20s. So there is a considerable age difference between them also.

I agree, thanks Bubu for posting up the charts and the Ooku diagram! There's so many different characters, so having the complete chart translated is a big help while watching! emoticon

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I missed the first twenty minutes of this episode (ep. 20) I tried to find it on d.addicts but it does not seem to have been uploaded. I hope to find it somewhere because I must have missed the marriage. Was it anything like the Shinto ceremonies with the many robes being worn? I think Atsuhime looks ravishing and I don't see how Iesada can ignore her. He is definitely not a fool. Did you notice the change in his facial expression when he 'caught' Atsuhime on the bridge? He opened his eyes wide and was not looking at all foolish.

Peg.

Peg -- Good news! I just checked D-Addicts and it seems they just uploaded Episode 20 with E-subs a couple of hours ago. emoticon Here's the link:

http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_62905.htm

I loved the scene with the wedding. I believe it was like a Shinto wedding -- since Iesada was wearing the formal black attire of the court, and Atsu-hime was wearing a white/beige robe with her face whitened. It was a beautiful wedding but I think because the Tokugawa family were a family of the military caste, their weddings had less pomp and decor than the marriages of the imperial family in Kyoto.

Hiroshi,

Yes I found this on d-addicts. Had a lot of trouble getting connected yesterday so gave up. this morning I have tried again and now it is slowly downloading. Also doing a SmapxSmap show which also takes an eternity to get going.
thanks for the info. I usually check with d-addicts when I need a piece of info re one of our shows. I usually only need a small part of an episode.
The reason I missed the Atsuhime wedding.......I fell asleep... Tiring day did me in. Glad I did wake up in time to see the rest of the episode.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Peg, for some reason I was also having trouble getting D-Addicts to work. I've been downloading the Atsu-Hime episodes as they've been aired, and for some reason Episode 20 wasn't working. It finally finished downloading sometime this afternoon -- maybe a general problem with the Torrent or something.

Something similar happened to me on Sunday -- I had recorded the episode of Joshi Deka and was watching it afterwards, but was falling asleep throughout half of the episode after a long day. So I decided to press stop and keep it for the following morning, LOL!

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Hiroshi,

Well I finally finished d/l the episode 20. I was glad to see the complete ep. but sorry that I did not have the pleasure of all the Shinto glory. I guess you are quite right and it only goes with the Imperial weddings. However, I was very pleased to see the end of the episode with the present day scenes of Satsuma and the samurai houses which are still there. The shrine aparently is still revered for the family. I now wish I had d.l all the episodes as I think the ending presentations are so interesting.

We do get ripped off a ittle bit and don't get all we would truly enjoy seeing. Must be grateful for what we have however..!!!

Peg, I also wish we could see more of the travelogues. I remember that for the first few episodes of Atsu-hime aired on UTB, they did air the subtitled travelogues, but then they stopped. Its a shame because a lot of the places featured in the travel segments are from scenes in modern-day Kagoshima (formerly Satsuma) and its really made me want to go there and maybe even study there if I do a study-abroad program in Japan.
