Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Atsu-hime #21 - A Wife's Battle

Interesting episode, since we had a whole lot of character development for Shogun Iesada and Atsu-hime, to say the least. We're also in March/April of 1857, so that means Atsu is now already 22. But moving on...
So Shogun Iesada is unable to bear children. I was surprised he told Atsu himself. When Atsu was speaking to Oshiga, the latter mentioned that she heard that Iesada was sterile from other sources, while Atsu heard it right from the horse's mouth. I am sure Honjuin, Utahashi, Takiyama, and the other women of the Ooku know about Iesada's sterility. The question is why they keep pushing Atsu to have an heir even if they know about this? Or perhaps Iesada is indeed lying? We must wait and see.
Ikushima is smuggling letters with information about the politics in the Ooku out to the Satsuma mansion in Edo where Onoshima, Saigo, and Nariakira are. I guess its the only way that they can be kept posted of the behind-the-scenes life in the Ooku, and how Atsu is holding up. I wonder what the punishment will be if Ikushima is discovered to be smuggling letters out? I guess it might even be considered a form of espionage.
I don't like Oshiga. While she seems like a sweet person, she really hides under that facade of a kind-face and sweet talk. I did notice though, that Atsu is really asserting her authority. Before, she would always be timid when sitting above or presiding over people. She had no problem when Oshiga bowed before her. And the end of the episode reveals that Atsu has indeed fallen in love with Shogun Iesada. Even after he screamed at her, LOL!
Episode 22 airs next week!

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
I also am not too sure of Oshiga. she seems older than Atsu definitely and I feel may be older than Iesada. Also she seems a little devious. Since she came from very low birth I wonder how the Shogun met her. She would be living a very pleasant life as his concubine so I wonder if her talk of loving him is genuine. She would not say otherwise would she?
I think the conversation between her and Atsu was a little awkward. It must have been from the imagination of the writers since I don't think this would be written as part of the history.
Some of the talk between the Shogun and Atsu would certainly have been overheard so I can imagine this may be based in part on what was heard by the Ooku attendants.
It is still a mystery about the nature of the shogun. He may well be impotent since his two previous wives both died childless. How did they die by the way? As for his mental state I think it is possible he may be suffering from a form of bi polar condition. He wavers from extreme shrill high level to being calm and wanting quiet. Very difficult for anyone to deal with his attitudes.
Atsu is going to have to be very clever to introduce the idea of an heir. I wonder if she will try to use the help of Oshiga?

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
class blockquote So Shogun Iesada is unable to bear children.Do you think there's a chance he's just gay? class blockquote I am sure Honjuin, Utahashi, Takiyama, and the other women of the Ooku know about Iesada's sterility. Then why the makeover to get him interested in her?
I know he has a concubine, but maybe he just likes to hang with her because she seems to understand him and/or mothers him. He seems very comfortable with her.
Like brad6 mentioned, wondering if the circumstance on how they met keeps them together.
It feels like the story setup should be done, so hopefully they'll get deeper into the story and move things along.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
CGE,
I do not think the shogun is gay. If he were he would have male attendants and probably a favourite. I doubt he would even have a concubine for show purposes. No. I think he is just not a very macho man.
It is his mental condition which makes for the interesting mystery.
