Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

CantGetEnough, now that you mention it, perhaps Lady Honjuin and Utahashi aren't aware of Shogun Iesada's sterility. Why else would Honjuin keep pushing Atsu-hime to bear an heir? By the way, Honjuin and Utahashi remind me of Lucy and Ethel -- always together, gossiping and plotting, LOL!

I'm also wondering how Iesada's first two wives died. How eerie that they would both die after being unable to bear children (though its now relieved that its Iesada's fault). The Ooku seems like such a dark place. I don't think that Lady Honjuin and Utahashi seem very threatening. The two that seem to be hiding something are Oshiga and Takiyama. Takiyama doesn't speak much, but she's running the show.

Atsu has some trouble on her hands about Yoshinobu. Takiyama and Lady Honjuin mentioned in previous episodes that they dislike the Lord of Mito (Yoshinobu's father) because of his "frugal" attitude. How will they deal with the prospect of having his son become their new boss? Red light.

Edit - Had a quick question. Because Lady Honjuin has an -in suffix to her name, this signifies that she has taken the tonsure after the passing of her husband, right? Then shouldn't she shave her head? I remember in the 2005 taiga Yo****sune, Kiyomori's wife shaved her head after her husband died. Or is it only in select situations?

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I was surprised by how direct Atsu-hime was with the shogun. I don't think I would have been brave enough to ask him why he was behaving in such a way. Poor thing! I don't think that she'll ever get a satisfactory answer and probably won't be able to get Yoshinobu named as the successor at this rate.

I think what he likes about Oshiga is that she just kind of goes along with whatever he does, whether it's chasing ducks or toasting crackers. She doesn't question him at all. She's kind of the opposite of Atsu-hime.

As far as Honjuiin's hairstyle, it seems that not all women who took the tonsure shaved their hair completely. I don't know if anyone remembers the taiga Genroku Ryoran but Lord Asano's wife also had a similar hairstyle to Honjuin's after taking the tonsure.

Thanks, sylia74! emoticon

Gotcha. So I guess some women shaved their head completely and some women just changed their hairstyle. I remember that in one of the recent episodes, we saw Oyuki (Atsu's mother in Satsuma) with a similar hairstyle to Honjuin after her husband passed away. She also must have taken the tonsure, but didn't shave her head.

Midaidokoro's hairstyles & kimonos

There is a photo of Honjuin with her hairstyle after tonsure.

Bubu, thanks for the links! Perhaps shaving one's head when they entered the tonsure wasn't really used in early modern Japan. I think I remember Hideyoshi's wife having shaved her head after Hideyoshi's death, but that was in the early 1600s. Maybe the practice was discontinued after that?

I think he likes that Atsu-hime is a challenge.

Also, with last nite's death, Shogun may depend on her even more.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

The last episode was mindblowing for me. The Shogun of course is not a fool by any means. This was to be expected. However, I was amazed by his description of his role as last shogun and his calm mentioning of having been poisoned many times. He has a clear picture of the future of Japan and he has no intention of naming his successor it would appear. I think he honours Atsu by discussing all this with her and expecting that she will not talk about it to anyone else. I liked her reply saying that she would not make any revelations because 'I am your wife'. She knew this would be the right and pleasing answer for him to hear.

Who had tried to poison the Shogun and how did he know and how did he keep on living???

Atsu-hime #22 - The Shogun's Secret

Wow, I think this recent episode was one of the best episodes thus far! Quite a lot happened, and there was a lot of development in the relationship between Atsu-hime and Shogun Iesada (including tons of development for the Shogun himself).

Hitotsubashi Yoshinobu seemed like an odd fellow -- he was acting very cold to both Abe and Nariakira (you'd think he would be grateful that these two are supporting him despite all the odds). He seemed weary to take power but at the same time arrogant and snooty. No wonder Shogun Iesada said he didn't care much for Yoshinobu. We'll see how that plays out.

The death of Abe seemed to have really shocked all of Japan (including the Ooku, Shogun Iesada, and especially Nariakira and the faction supporting Hitotsubashi Yoshinobu). As Iesada remarked to Atsu in the final scene of the episode, Abe was pretty much running the show for fourteen years -- so him having died in the midst of a great crisis leaves everybody in a shock (and nobody seems willing to step up to the plate).

Back in Satsuma...
I was surprised Naogoro asked Nariakira that upfront question about whether or not he had Atsu marry the Shogun even though he knew that Iesada was a fool. Like always, Nariakira took it well and gave Naogoro an honest answer. That's why I like Nariakira, he never lies or shies away from telling the truth. He always steps up to the plate and takes the challenge.

The final scene between Atsu and Shogun Iesada was very, very well done. I think it might be one of the best scenes in the drama so far. So Shogun Iesada is indeed not a fool, but he does seem like a very, very dark person. He has grown up in a rough and dangerous environment, so its no wonder that he trusts nobody. It will be hard to convince him to name Yoshinobu as his heir, especially since he doesn't see the point in naming one. Atsu is on her own now, especially since Abe is gone. That pretty much leaves Ikushima as her sole ally in the Ooku.

Peg, I was also wondering who tried to poison Shogun Iesada and why they would do that. They didn't mention much else about it, so I hope that we'll hear more about it in a future episode. This drama is getting really good!!

Episode 23 airs next week. emoticon

Haha yeah, that dark look he gave Atsu-hime before going to sleep was rather creepy. Poor Atsu, she sure does have a lot to deal with.

But the way she gave advice to Abe (before his death) was wonderful. It shows how much Atsu has grown since she was a teenager back in Satsuma arguing with Ikushima over her daily etiquette lessons. Now she is becoming involved in politics.
