Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

The thing that is so interesting to me is that although this is a drama with the writers taking leaps of faith in some of the scenes, neverthless, we have the actual details of the history which they adhere to pretty closely.

These facts are there to be read in actual truth. The writers have only to place the historical skeleton on paper and fill in the personal scenes with their imaginations. This cannot go far afield really because they know who is who ,and the various characters have been described by other people who were living at the time. The records are all there for reference.

They do not go overboard when they have a personal scene with the Shogun and Atsu. She really did have great input with him and later on.

Peg, I agree -- I think the thing I enjoy most about Atsu-hime (and most of the taiga dramas) are that the writers not only do an excellent job of sticking to the general historical facts, but at the same time also add their own flavor to the personal scenes and to the characters.

I think this drama is my favorite taiga so far. The acting, musical score, and costumes/scenery are superb.

Atsu-hime 27 - The Wife of a Tokugawa

I liked last night's episode, mainly because of all the scenes with Atsu and Shogun Iesada. The depiction of their relationship is one of my favorite elements of this drama. At first, I was weary of how the marriage would turn out, but they have truly learned to love and respect each other. Atsu has learned how to live as a member of the Tokugawa family, fully supporting and backing her husband's decisions and beliefs (even if they conflict with those of her father Nariakira and also with Ikushima).

Iesada, meanwhile, has learned to truly love Atsu. I liked the scene where he told Atsu that the reason he ended up choosing Yo****omi as his heir as because of his young age -- Atsu would be able to act as his political advisor and also as his guardian. It would be harder to take that position with Yoshinobu, who was older and more politically adept. But maybe the Tokugawa succession dispute has drawn to a close -- since Lord Ii Naosuke is now the Chief Minister and since Iesada disclosed his intention to name Yo****omi as heir. Atsu stated that she will fully support Iesada on any decision he makes, so maybe the battle is over?

Ikushima... wow! She came down pretty hard on Takiyama during the beginning of the episode. I was surprised when Takiyama snapped at her and ordered her to refrain, especially since Takiyama is always calm, cool, and collected. She is technically Ikushima's boss, though, since she manages the Ooku. But on the other hand, I suppose I can see why Ikushima was so passionately pushing Atsu to convince Iesada on the heir issue all these years. Like Saigo, she must feel vexed at the very idea of not carrying out Nariakira's orders to his liking, and she also can't deal with the idea of failing at her mission after devoting six years to moving to Satsuma to train Atsu, following her to Edo, and even living in the Ooku.

I liked the scene of Atsu "escaping" from the Ooku. It must have been unprecedented for Atsu (or even Ikushima) to have left the Ooku and went to the front quarters of Edo Castle. Good thing Lady Honjuin wasn't there... she probably would have went beserk, LOL!

At the beginning of the episode, I couldn't believe there was yet another succession dispute, this time for the post of the Tairo (Chief Minister). Yo****omi's supporters (and especially the Ooku) were pushing for Ii Naosuke, who wanted to maintain the status quo and the prestige of the Tokugawa family. Yoshinobu's supporters (including Nariakira) pushed for Matsudaira Yoshinaga. I think we've seen Yoshinaga in previous episodes -- he usually accompanied Abe. Yoshinaga's views on administration was to have all the feudal clans on equal footing and participate equally in administration.

I wasn't surprised with Iesada's decision to choose Ii Naosuke. As Iesada put it, if Yoshinaga was chosen, he would have reduced the status of the Tokugawa family to a mere feudal clan. So by April 1858, Ii Naosuke was named as the Tairo (Chief Minister).

Back in Satsuma...
It looks like the young samurai of Satsuma are becoming restless and frustrated with the Tokugawa regime. That scene with all those young samurai voicing their desires to go to Edo took place in Okubo's residence. I guess he is beginning to find a place for himself.

I wonder why Nariakira was in such a nostalgic mood. He wrote a letter to Atsu (which she never read!) and told Naogoro that he felt it would be his last letter to her. I wonder why his words have such an ominous tone and feel to them. Despite all the hardships he put Atsu through, I think that he truly did love her as his daughter.

We're still in late April of 1858. Ii Naosuke was named Tairo, and Shogun Iesada privately disclosed to Atsu that he is going to name Yo****omi as his heir - and Atsu wholeheartedly will support his decision. I wonder if she will read Nariakira's letter?

Episode 28 airs next week!
a curel fate await those two lovebirds

Treasure hunting...

SAKAI MASATO who plays the Shogun in 'Atsuhime' has played a role in the Kimura drama 'ENGINE' I was so delighted to find him and I am going to watch Engine again soon. He played the role of a teacher in the orphanage run by Kimura's father in the drama. He was in a fairly long role so it will be interesting to see him again in a modern part.

Oh yeah, Sakai Masato has also become one of my favorite J-drama actors. So far, I've only seen him in two roles (as Yamanami in Shinsengumi and as Shogun Iesada in Atsu-hime) so I'm really looking forward to seeing him in a modern drama. I'm sure he'll do great in a modern drama too -- he has such a great ability to portray different kinds of characters.

I have been watching this taiga, but not consistently (because of work on Sat-if I work 2nd shift, when we get off after 8 pm, I'm too tired to watch TV). Thank you for all the posts-reading all of them made me realize that I have been missing out on this show. I will do my best to catch up with all of you.

No problem, pinaygirl! Maybe MySoju or CrunchyRoll will upload the complete series (with English subtitles) after the drama concludes. I think that's what they did with the former taiga -- Furiin Kazan. I checked MySoju, and all 49 episodes were up there. Maybe they just want to wait until the entire series has aired, and then they'll start uploading the series in full. Its a great taiga -- certainly worth the wait.

Just loved the scenes between Iesada and Atsuhime. They are good together. And, of course, I never tire of watching the depth of character Sakai Masoto provides in any role he plays. He is just so excellent.

Deservedly, he has a lot of work in his resumé. I see he's been doing the J-talk show circuit these days. Very animated, interesting personality. Here's a little project he did a few years ago. (Do I ever wish I could understand Japanese—or at least have e-subs for this! LOL!)

Sakai Masoto in Surreal Manga, "Cynical Panda" class blockquote The series is made up of short discussions between a human and a panda about everything from popular culture to language jokes. The panda will be voiced by Namase Katsuhisa, who played the character of Sawatari Goro in the TV Drama adaptation of the Gokusen manga. The young man who chats with the panda will be played by Sakai Masato.... —from AnimeNewsNetworkabout Surreal Manga

Nchristi, thanks so much for posting up the info on Cynical Panda! I really enjoyed watching that clip with Sakai Masato and the panda. Sakai seems like a pretty interesting guy, and I like how he always transfers that interesting persona into his acting.

But the Cynical Panda segment does seem pretty interesting! The voice of the panda bear, Namase Katsuhisa, is another one of my favorite Japanese comedians. He played the detective with the wig (Yabe) in the Trick series.

I agree, it would be awesome if there was a version of "Cynical Panda" with E-subs! emoticon
