Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

hey everyone

I'm glad that tenshoin told his mom that her son had died. mom assumed that he was still doing administrive duties.

takiyama ordered her not to tell, but out of regard she told shiga first, then his mother.

Meanwhile in satsuma, the oni guy told Komatsu san that someday....their turn will come in the future. As for saigo san, he want to commit seppoku or hari kiri.
priest told him to take away the sad feelings away to save it for nariakira.

komatsu will be serving tadayuki, but tadayuki has his father to be concern about.

As for tenshoin...with fierce determination she will be the guardian of Yoshiotomi despite what the chief minister thinks(women in the ooku should stay out of politics)...........you go tenshoin atsuhime sama! :0)

Atsu-hime #29 - Tenshoin Atsu-hime

Last night's episode was very well done, and it was also an important one for Atsu, now known as Lady Tenshoin. I find the idea of changing one's name after taking the tonsure very interesting. It seems the -in suffix (like in Tenshoin or Honjuin) must be added to the new name in order to signify that the individual has indeed taken the tonsure and is devoting their lives to praying for the repose of their departed loved ones.

I felt horrible for Tenshoin during the beginning of last night's episode. Even when she tried to do something good for Oshiga and Honjuin, she was met with a severe backlash, accused of poisoning Iesada herself, and even beaten by the pile of flowers Honjuin had in her hand. Despite the double blow of losing her father and husband, Tenshoin still had attempted to save the shogun's mother and concubine from suffering the same way she had. I couldn't believe Honjuin was going to hit Tenshoin next with that wooden thing she had.. good thing Takiyama came in the room and stopped her.

Lady Honjuin must also be feeling vexed. Now that she has lost her only son, she is pretty much completely alone in the Ooku. Tenshoin is also, except at least she has the company of Ikushima. As for Oshiga, it looks like she took the tonsure and mentioned that she will be leaving the Ooku. I'm glad she was able to make up with Tenshoin before she left. Oshiga's visit helped Tenshoin snap out of it and focus on the other matters at hand.

I liked the scenes between Tenshoin and Ikushima in last night's episode. It had been so long that the two of them had sat together and had a talk about something other than the shogunal succession dispute or the Hitotsubashi faction. It was nice to see how Ikushima tried to cheer up and comfort Tenshoin as she combed her hair.

Back in Satsuma...
It looks like Naogoro has fallen into the favor of Nariakira's brother and successor, Tadayuki. Tadayuki seems more unsure of his new position than Nariakira was. I guess that's why he wanted the support of Naogoro. I couldn't believe that Shimazu Narioki (the old lord of Satsuma) and his wife Oyura mentioned they want to return to Satsuma to also help Tadayuki with administration. As they say, you can't have too many cooks in the kitchen...

As for Saigo - it was good that he didn't commit suicide. Seeing how devoted Saigo was to Nariakira, it didn't surprise me that he felt so vexed. That monk he spoke to (Gessho) was a very kind person, especially since he helped comfort Saigo and helped him realize that in order to follow through with Nariakira's will, he needs to survive. Let's see if the old lord of Mito ever gets those letters from the imperial court, since the narrator mentioned Chief Minister Naosuke was notified of the secret correspondence and wanted those involved "severely punished".

Speaking of Naosuke... what a horrible person. I couldn't believe he lied straight out to Tenshoin about not having heard from Iesada that he wanted her to act as Yo****omi's guardian. Tenshoin has truly matured -- I was very glad she stood her ground (without help from anybody else -- not even Ikushima or Takiyama) and declared to Naosuke she would not forget the late shogun's will.

We're in late August of 1858. Hmm.. its going to take a little while getting used to writing Tenshoin instead of Atsu, LOL! Episode 30 airs next Saturday.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

The aftermath of the Shogun's death has revealed so many interesting powers and maneuverings at work here.

Naosuke - His world is about to be rocked. His assumption of a weak woman safely neutralized behind the locked "back" door (Ooku) while he freely does his political thing up front—well, let's just say while he might have caught a glimpse of turbulent waters ahead, he ain't seen nothin' yet. A 23-year old woman already having the confidence and strength of Atsu becomes a more than formidable power player as she matures. She's practically only a kid still. Naosuke, fasten your seat belt!

Saigo - Interesting scenes. I can understand how Saigo would both be deeply affected by Nariakira's death and left purposeless in life. Following his master into death would seem a reasonable choice. How effective that the old priest asked him basically to give his life and burden over into his hands and work to implement Nariakira's life purpose. Couldn't you just feel Saigo's anguish as he gathered up all the crushing pain in his heart and entrusted it into the kindly priest's hands? Powerful scene.

Ikushima - I got the distinct feeling that she will be leaving Atsu's service. When Atsu asked Ikushima directly for reassurance that she would always remain by her side, Ikushima avoided answering and said something generically calming instead.

Eyebrows - Was it just me, or did others notice that Atsu and Naogoro had much darker, larger eyebrows in this episode? Since every little detail has meaning in this drama, is this denoting another maturity change in their characters?

I'm certainly looking forward to the rest of the story. Sometimes these dramas reach a high point and then everything is downhill from there. I don't get that feeling with Princess Atsuhime. Atsu has certainly found a different voice—literally and figuratively—hasn't she? Well, she doesn't have much else to do going forward, not having children. What better than devoting herself to honoring her husband's will and desire? She has the guts, personal power, and smarts to accomplish things Iesada couldn't. They were a great couple that way—Iesada was an acute observer and thinker while Atsu had the mental/emotional equipment to act in ways Iesada couldn't. They complemented one another in a number of areas.

I've read as much as I could find on Sakai Masato (Iesada) and it certainly has enhanced my appreciation for his acting in nearly every scene he had. Sakai is quite the intellectual and deep thinker on life and people. As I rewatch various scenes, the depth in his eyes and what he brings to his character just blows me away. Now that I have a broadened appreciation for Sakai the man, I would love to go back and carefully watch each one of Iesada's scenes in this taiga.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Nchristi, that's true -- it did seem like Tenshoin and Naogoro had considerably darker eyebrows in this episode. I agree, I think it signifies their new change in maturity. I liked how Tenshoin strongly defended Iesada's will to Naosuke during their meeting. She's truly matured, and gained a lot of confidence and strength. After Tenshoin finished talking, she pretty much left Naosuke speechless. Go Atsu-hime!!! emoticon

I must say, I'm really going to miss seeing Sakai Masato in his role as Shogun Iesada. He played the role in such an excellent manner. I'm glad that we were able to see a few flashbacks of scenes featuring Iesada throughout this episode. One of them was my favorite scene with Iesada... where he was sitting on a stack of tatami mats during the meeting with Harris!

But Atsu-hime is, so far, one of my favorite taiga dramas. Its already been twenty nine episodes, but each episode is so interesting and both enjoyable and informative to watch.

LOL - not very far!!

I, too, enjoyed the flashback scenes...... it was like closure for all of us.

If I understood correctly, we are not going to see the formal funeral Image class blockquote I'm certainly looking forward to the rest of the story. I don't get that feeling with Princess Atsuhime.I know what you mean, last night I felt that way about Great King Sejong.

Edited to add: Was it me or was there a lot more commercials! Almost every 10 minutes there were a block of commercials.

CantGetEnough, I know what you mean about the commercials! Ugh. They air so many blocks of them, and lately it seems to have increased rather than decreased. That's why I love what Magicbell (KXLA) does for the 6:30 PM Sunday show. They only air a few commercials throughout the entire showing, so often times the episode is finished within fifty minutes.

Yeah, it seems we didn't get to see either Nariakira's or Iesada's formal funeral. I think the last scene we saw of Iesada's coffin was after Honjuin and Shiga had found out about the death and were all sobbing in the funeral chamber.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Hiroshi, do you know if the funeral scenes were deleted, or was Iesada's funeral not part of the drama and the production just focused on the emotional aftermath experienced by Atsu within the Ooku?

I appreciated Atsu's comment that she has already lived many lives. And we've lived them with her. This is the first taiga that I have been consistently interested and drawn in by each new "life" she moves into. The only hesitation I felt was when she left Satsuma. She was such an enchanting child and young woman that I worried what she would become when she was taken away for her first adoption and put on the road to Edo. Back then, I couldn't imagine the same level of interest could be maintained. But here we are, several "lives" later. I am anticipating her new life even more than I have the past ones!

Naogoro also interests me. He seems to still be a fellow traveler, but on a parallel road. At some point, it seems their paths must intersect once again, somehow, somewhere....

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Nchristi, I just checked the unedited version of the episode that was online, and it looks like Iesada's funeral wasn't a part of the drama. Luckily, it seems like no scenes were edited or cut out, (except for the next-episode preview and the travelogue at the end of the episode) so I'm glad UTB isn't cutting scenes from the taiga dramas like they used to. It would have been interesting if the writers had included scenes of Iesada's funeral, though.

I also liked Atsu's comment about living many lives. I think its interesting because each time she has starting living a new life, she has received a new name as well. When she was growing up in Satsuma, her name was Okatsu, which changed to Atsu when she was adopted by Shimazu Nariakira. Then, after the death of Iesada, her name changed once again -- to Tenshoin when she took the tonsure.

This drama is so exciting to watch. I'm really liking each and every episode so far.

The brand Suzunoya was established in 1947, with the eponymous company founded three years later with designer Kiyoko Koizumi at the helm. From 1959, the brand started producing kimono with a different theme each year and marked its 46th anniversary in 2004. Koizumi was responsible for the wardrobe research for Oikawa, NHK's long-running period drama slot, in 1984 with Sanga Moyu and has been handling costumes for the past 22 years, including last year's hit Yo****sune. In 1985, Koizumi founded the Seyko Kimono Culture Foundation with kimono maker Seyko. In 1987, she participated in the Tokyo International Collections fashion event, showing a kimono collection with Nina Ricci. --JFW

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Thanks for the info on Suzunoya, Bubu! The colors and designs of those kimonos are very beautiful. How interesting that they headed the wardrobe research for Yo****sune, the 2005 taiga drama. The wardrobes and kimonos in that drama were also very nicely done.

I like that last picture with Miyazaki Aoi leading Kiyoko Koizumi, the founder of Suzuonya, onto the stage. Miyazaki Aoi must have gotten quite used to wearing kimonos after her role as Atsu-hime!
