I have wondered about the giving away of children I think they only parted with daughters. sons would surely stay in their family to carry on the line.

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I don't know if you remember Toshiie & Matsu but Toshiie's litte brother was adopted by another family. He had a totally different name but everyone knew that he and Toshiie were brothers. I think that in families with more than one son the 2nd son could be adopted, like Kondo in Shinsengumi. I don't think the 1st born son usually gets adopted into another family though.

I have never watched a Taiga drama that made me cry this much. I can't even imagine what it's going to be like when she moves up in the world. class reveal Image class spoiler Or the heartache she's going to feel when she gets married to a man who's crazy and in power.

I'm going to miss seeing Okatsu's mom. I really liked her wise and gentle character a lot.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Well, I finally caught up with this drama! Peg and Ralph, thanks so much for the summaries! It helped me keep track of what was going on when I finished the rest of Episode 6 that I had on tape. Here's the pictures for Episode 6 and 7 and my combined thoughts on both:

#6 - 女の道 - A Woman's Destiny
aired Saturday, March 23, 2008

#7 - 父の涙 - A Father's Tears
aired Saturday, March 30, 2008

Wow, so much has happened in these two episodes. Kikumoto's suicide, the adoption of Katsu by the main Shimazu family - all with the backdrop of the impending American warships. By the end of Episode 7, we've already reached 1853, the height of the action.

Kikumoto's suicide could also be a silent protest against the adoption. Though she tried to put up a false front by saying that it was so auspicious and good, I think she felt like she would be losing a part of herself (something Katsu mentioned to her mother.. that she felt like she was losing a part of herself). Wet nurses during that period were like parents to the young children of the nobility, often raising the children themselves. Katsu was lucky - having parents who were mostly there for her. Children of the imperial family sometimes seldom had privacy with their parents, especially their fathers (the emperors).

Ep. 7 was very, very sad. I've watched sad taigas before, but the sad episodes were almost always towards the middle or end, never this early. I liked all the symbolism as well, especially between Naogoro and Katsu. Switching the amulets, the final game of go, and their final meeting as she is in the palanquin.

As I look back on it now, the adoption seemed so inhumane - taking a young girl away from her parents, and pretty much making her discard her entire life as she knew it. Not only is it tough for young Katsu, but on her family as well. Watching Katsu's mother, always full of happiness and positive advice, finally break down and cry was probably one of the saddest scenes in the episode.

Looking forward to Ep. 8 next Saturday. Gonna be a long week!!

I'm with you on this, sylia. I've thoroughly enjoyed so much of this drama from the very beginning—a vivacious girl's wondrous, carefree childhood in the country. But now I'm feeling a dreaded foreboding of what the rest of her life will be as she moves into the emotional prison and ugliness of "high society." The previews didn't help!

So far, I've never enjoyed or continued watching any of the Ooku dramas. Yes, the costuming and the grace of the women are truly beautiful, but the socio-political backbiting and infighting is so vicious, ugly, and cruel that it doesn't outweigh the visual beauty for me.

Oh yeah, those previews made me feel worse for Katsu after I saw them. She doesn't have anybody by her side except the one servant that she was allowed to bring with her. I'm glad that Katsu's mother was able to convince Nariakira's envoy to allow Katsu to take at least one servant with her. It might not replace Kikumoto, but hopefully it will make her feel more comfortable in her new home.

So Nariakira's father and brother are fully out of the picture now? I know that his brother went back to his territory and promised to leave Nariakira alone, but what ever happened to the father and his consort? Did the two just remain in Edo where the Shogun can keep an eye on him?

Yeah! I also realized a couple of years ago that Katsu's dad also played the terminally ill father on Shiawase no Shippo that aired on KXLA/Magicbell a couple of years ago.

I downloaded last week's episode and watched the ending again because I liked it so much. Katsu's departure from her family home and her last meeting with Naogoro on the road to the castle had this sad, instrumental music playing in the background. Then, after Katsu sees the amulet, the music switches to this suspenseful, fast-paced music. Very ominous.

#8 - お姫様教育 - Training to be a Princess

Wow, what an episode! I was into it for the entire hour, and while I watched it I don't recall ever glancing at the clock. It doesn't feel like it, but a lot happened plot-wise (as well as character development for Katsu.)

I'm glad that the mother, Yuki, never burned Kikumoto's letter. She was smart in keeping it until now, when her daughter needed it most. I like Katsu's special relationship with her attendant Shina. I think the two are so close because Shina is Katsu's only tie to her prior life with her family. Its only natural that she would feel fondness and trust in her (even if she is only an attendant).

The senior lady of the Oh-oku Hirakawa got me so mad! Her haughty personality (especially when she tried to get the letter from Katsu) needed to end, but Katsu put an end to that with her "I am Lord Nariakira's daughter!" line. Seems like it put an end to her job as well! LOL.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new senior lady Ikushima. I noticed she looked familiar, she also played Kiyomori's wife on the 2005 taiga, Yo****sune. She was my favorite character there, and hopefully she will do as good as a job on this drama as well. Let's see how fateful their relationship becomes. What exactly does Nariakira and Abe (the man in Edo) have up their sleeves..?
