Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Hmm, I was just checking UTB's Japanese site, and came across the program listing for Atsuhime. UTB just updated their program listing to include Episode 50 and it looks like the final episode is going to be split up into two parts after all. Here's what the listing said on the Japanese site -- the dates haven't been posted on the English site yet.
1月24日、31日(土)放送 9:00pm~10:00pm
第50回 「一本の道」
Saturday, January 24th and Saturday, January 31st: broadcast from 9:00pm to 10:00pm
Episode #50 - "One Path"
So from the looks of it, Episode 50 is going to be split into two parts -- Part 01 will be shown on 1/24, and Part 02 (our very last segment of Atsuhime ) will be shown on 1/31. I'm presuming the first episode of Tenchijin will air the following Saturday, 2/7.
There haven't been any further announcements made on UTB's website, but if there is a change or modification in their schedule, I'm sure they'll post it on their website or air a notice on TV.

NChan, welcome to the board! Thanks for posting here in our Atsuhime discussion -- hope you enjoy your stay with us here! Thanks for also posting those links -- sometimes I love to re-watch the earlier episodes just to see how our characters have developed and matured.
Thanks for the welcome. I really enjoyed Atsuhime and got excited when I
saw all of you here discussing it. I have watched Atsuhime on TV (NHK) but
I had a hard time understanding the language especially that they were
using old Japanese terms. So I was really happy when I find out that I could
watch it on line with English subs. I have been here in Japan for several
years now & saw some episodes of other Taiga dramas but only Atsuhime
had captivated me very strongly. I guess it was because of Aoi Miyazaki's
brilliant performance there, though others did well also, plus the costume
and music, they were just perfect!
At the moment I am watching Aoi Miyazaki's "Jonju Kirari" or "Pure Heart",
NHK's Asadora (morning) drama where Aoi had also won best actress. It
was shown here every morning for 3 or 5? months in 2007, before the
Atsuhime.
Right now, Aoi is busy promoting her new movie "Shonen merikensakku", her
first comedy movie. She visited my city 2 weeks ago promoting it but I didn't
know that she was coming so I missed the chance of seeing her in person.
Anyway, it's great to read all your posts here about Atsuhime. I am enjoying
it, so keep sharing.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
I've also had a great history lesson, Nsheldon. I didn't have much interest in this time period of Japanese history before watching Atsuhime, but now I've become very interested in learning about later part of the Tokugawa shogunate, as well as the historical figures we've seen. I think that these historical dramas are a great opportunity to learn more about Japanese history. They're fun to watch, too!
Nchristi, I re-watched that scene with Naogoro and Atsu playing go again. What a beautiful scene. The setting summer sun, Atsu and Naogoro tearfully smiling at each other, the sad music... these two have been through so many difficult times, but I think in the end, they still have the same close friendship that they had while growing up in Satsuma. I think that last part of the episode was one of the best scenes we've seen in this taiga drama.
I'm missing Atsuhime already!!

That part was the best and most memorable scene for Aoi Miyazaki too, she
couldn't stop crying even after that scene was taken, she said during one of
her interview. Naogoro comforted her, tapping her back & saying "it's OK, it's
OK..." I think they became very good friends too in real life.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Yeah, I think I read somewhere that as a result of working together on this drama, Miyazaki Aoi and actor Eita (who plays Naogoro) have become great friends. They really have great chemistry together -- it would be wonderful to see them together in another drama.
By the way, does anyone remember Lady Hisa, who played the role of Nariakira's wife in the early episodes? She's the lady who's face was covered by a veil due to a pockmark. I think I remember her being very mean to Atsu in the beginning (refusing to meet with her, etc.) but later on becoming closer with her.
I was wondering what ever happened to Lady Hisa, since we hadn't seen her in over thirty episodes. I read on the Japanese Wikipedia site that after Nariakira died in 1858, she took the tonsure and was re-named Lady Eijuin, and passed away two months after Nariakira in October of 1858. Atsu probably was never even notified of it because she was still dealing with Nariakira and her own husband Iesada's passing.
