Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
NChan, I know what you mean -- knowing the background of the historical figures makes visiting the places they called home so much more meaningful and fascinating. I love Nara and Kyoto because they are full of these historical sites.
Yeah, Yoshinobu never administered Japan from Edo Castle. I think one of the reasons why he never left Kyoto for Edo was because by the time he became Shogun in 1867, Satsuma and Choshu in the west had already started their movement to get rid of the Tokugawa shogunate. So, Yoshinobu thought it would be better for him to be in Kyoto and closer to all the action, rather than farther away in Edo. But I agree, he never cared much for Tenshoin or the Ooku, so that might have also played into him staying away from Edo Castle. He disliked Satsuma, and that is why he distrusted Tenshoin and her presence in Edo Castle. Like we saw in the drama, though, he ended up meeting both with Tenshoin and Kazunomiya after Satsuma forced him to resign.
On that book about Kazunomiya's life -- I've heard of it, but unfortunately my local bookstore doesn't carry it. It's actually a book for young adult readers, which I thought was great. What a nice way to educate young kids about historical figures.

NChan, I think you mentioned in a previous post here that you lived in Niigata, Japan. Isn't Niigata very close to the region of land that the Uesugi once ruled? I've been really interested in the characters we're seeing in Tenchijin, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the drama progresses. I wonder if there are any statues of famous historical figures like Uesugi Kenshin in or around Niigata? Yes, I live in Niigata City, pretty close to Juetsu City, the present name of the place which warlord Uesugi Kenshin once lived and ruled the Echigo Province now called Niigata Prefecture. The Kasuga Mountain Castle in Juetsu, one of Niigata's historical sights was his home. I haven't visited it yet.
I've checked the Web and I can't find any statues of Uesugi Kenshin in or around Niigata, but I found one statue of Naoe Kanetsugu in Nagaoka which is also very close to Niigata City. Statues of Uesugi Kenshin can be found in Uesugi Shrine in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture and another one (Statue of Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin) in Kawanakajima, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. Both prefectures are about 3 hours away by car or bus from Niigata City.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)
Hiroshi,
This page will be of interest to anyone who loved 'Atsuhime'
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20090913a6.html
If I have done this correctly it is about the 'last samurai' Saigo.
I have been doing a search about Satsuma and that whole area and it is fascinating. So far have not seen mention of Atsuhime but lots about the men in her time.
Kagoshima sound like a wonderful area to visit. If only I were several years younger........
