Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I was thinking about this drama today and starting wondering about Atsu's parents and also Naogoro. I think one of the most upsetting scenes I saw in last week's episode was when Atsu told Ikushima "I want to see my mother". Ikushima reprimanded her, and said that her new mother was Nariakira's wife who was in Edo. How hard - to be forced to forget about the woman who's raised you for your entire life and think of a woman you've never seen before as your "new mother".

I'm sure Atsu's parents feel like a part of their life is missing. I wonder how they will react when they hear that their daughter is going to be married off. Naogoro too.

#11 - Reunion on the Tanabata

Image

Another emotional and touching episode. I really like Lord Nariakira. Despite being rather intimidating (with that very gruff and tough-sounding voice) I think that as a person, he is very understanding and progressive. Kind as well. That was very nice of him to allow Naogoro to have a reunion with Atsu (she was just gleaming when she saw him!).

I was surprised that Naogoro was so up-front with Lord Nariakira about his feelings for Atsu. I noticed he slipped when he asked when Atsu was departing for Edo. Luckily, Nariakira didn't seem to mind the news getting out. I guess that's because the departure is so soon (the narrator mentioned at the end that it is less than a month away, so Atsu better start packing!)

I guess Atsu's parents back at the Imaizumi mansion are now aware of the impending marriage. But it will be nice for them to see their daughter again. I wonder how Atsu will react to seeing them on such an emotional day.

This show is really, really getting good. Episode 12 will air next week!

They kept mentioning the Tanabata Festival during today's episode (during the scene with the incense and also in the title). If any of you are curious about what the Tanabata Festival is, here's some info from a Wikipedia article on Tanabata. class blockquote Tanabata (七夕, tanabata?), meaning "Evening of the seventh") is a Japanese star festival, derived from the Chinese star festival, Qi Xi (七夕 "The Night of Sevens"), also called Chilseok in Korea.

It celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). The Milky Way, a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. Since the stars come out at night, the celebration is held at night.

In modern day Japan, mostly it is celebrated on the same date (the 7th day of the 7th month) but of the present solar calendar, which brings the day more than a month earlier from the corresponding date in the lunar calendar. This is similar to that of the Chinese New Year often falling sometime in February. In some areas, the celebrations are still held on or close to the original date, the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Despite the underlying sadness of leaving family altogether, I ws happy to see that Atsu was able to see Naogoro once more and I hope she will also see her real parents before she goes.

I wonder if Naogoro will be brought in touch with Atsu once they are both in Edo. He would be the one to protect her or at least give her confidence in what will be a rocky time ahead I think. Will she be buried in the ooku or will she have a larger part to play with her husband in the politics of the day. She is becoming a strong person and I don't see her being a quiet little mouse in the palace.

I do like Eita...he is really a good actor.

Yeah, I also hope that once Naogoro is in Edo (since Nariakira seems to be inclined in allowing him to go there) he is allowed to associate with Atsu. I don't know if she'll be allowed to associate with other people though, especially since she'll be in the Ooku Inner Palace.

The new shogun seems to be getting scarier and scarier. I really like the actor though - he definitely makes for a most believable performance. Eita is also great. The way he acted in the scene where Naogoro reacts to Nariakira's offer to allow him to meet with Atsu was awesome.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Very moving episode on Saturday. Very well played by "Naogoro." It seemed a little odd that the lord would allow them to be together, unless he was further testing their relationship. Perhaps even a little cruel since he already knew Naogoro loves her. Does being together in such a bittersweet circumstance pour salt on the wound—or does it in some way lead to easier resolution? I don't know.

One thing, though, it sets up Naogoro's character to be further involved in Atsu's life down the road, especially since he's now going to be reporting regularly, it seems, to the lord on what's going on amongst the people.

I'm really enjoying this taiga. It's the first one that has really drawn me in fully on an emotional level. Maybe because it's not all about fighting and advancement through war—the ultimate life goal. The previous ones were interesting, but these characters I really care about. The casting is very strong, a right actor for the right part.

J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I think Lord Nariakira was trying to be nice to Nagoro because they both know that once Atsu Hime enters the Ooku it will probably be next to impossible for Nagoro to see her, especially in such a relaxed manner.

I think this is shaping up to be one of my favorite Taiga dramas. I really appreciate that they are focusing on a woman's experience in that era. I never realized until watching this show how lonely a woman's life in the upper society could be. Usually the women's story lines are relegated to the sideline. Even in Komyo Ga Tsuji even though Chiyo was the main character it still seemed pretty standard issue as far as the thrust of the story.

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

Yeah, this is turning out to be one of my favorite taiga dramas too. I think its the first taiga in a very long time that hasn't focused specifically on war and battle. The fact that the drama is set in southern Japan (a region that isn't really covered much in history) also makes it interesting, since we haven't seen how Japanese history is percieved by the people of the southern island of Kyushu before.

I guess once all is said and done, Naogoro must have felt more pain after seeing Atsu again. But since he's going to Edo, I wonder if their fates will be somehow intertwined? (All put into consideration, it will be much harder for him to gain entry into the shogun's castle even he comes from a samurai family.)

Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I am totally enthralled with this taiga; and this coming from someone who never enjoyed or cared about taigas before. This is in great part due to Aoi chan who lends a freshness to the stuffy staid old taigas that has sorely been needed to attract viewers such as myself. Thank goodness they are avoiding the endless boring closeups on dirty bearded faces whose grunts remind me more or cavemen then samurais.
Although I never cared to be a student of ancient Japanese history, I'm intrigued at the intrigues that existed during the Edo periods.

I hope this brings in a new freshness to taiga productions with an enchanting and talented young actress and the elimination of the closeups of bearded grunters syndrome.

Oh, wow.... Thanks for mentioning Sakai Masato, sylia74! I thought he looked a little familiar, but I never looked at him closely enough, I guess. Yamanami was my very favorite character in Shinsengumi. (I even named my hummingbird after him! emoticon)

I wish he had a major role in this drama. I truly love this actor's manner and abilities.
oh that's cute...... :-)

Hey Ralph! I hope the ratings for this show are high so that they will make more taigas like this one. This show really is exceptional, the writing, the acting, even the musical cues. class reveal Image class spoiler I think next year is going to be another Sengoku era show (focusing on one of Useugi Kenshin's men) so I guess it will be back to the "normal" taiga experience.

Someone mentioned in an earlier reply about cutting out the opening credit. I was shocked the first time I saw them do that but I have to say if it means that they're cutting out less of the actual show then I'm all for it.
