Re: J-Drama: 篤姫 (Atsu-hime)

I also hope Atsu realizes one day that what she feels for Naogoro is love. I think he is going to find some kind of a way to meet with Atsu regularly in Edo, which would involve being a regular in the shogun's castle - not an easy task in those days. I wonder how he will pull it off.

Speaking of the shogun, I wonder how Atsu will react to the shogun? She seems to believe that he is (personality-wise) the greatest man in Japan. Yet, she's still resigning to her fate no matter what kind of person he is. From what we've seem of the shogun, while he does seem disturbed and a little creepy to say the least, he certainly doesn't seem like an evil person. Maybe Atsu will somehow be able to become friends with him and eventually create a happy relationship between the two. But with the presence of the Ooku who knows...

From what I know of the Ooku, they may have had families in the form of siblings or parents, but I doubt that they were allowed to see them regularly or have them come to the castle. But I hope Ikushima is allowed to accompany Atsu to Edo Castle. Though Atsu is not very fond of her, I think she is the only person who will understand Atsu's situation and where she's coming from.

That was an episode that required I have my kleenex box handy. Thank goodness this seems to be a pivotal episode in which her youth and past are being left behind and she will be moving on into a new life/world.

After the farewell with her father, mother, and Naogoro—then the news that she's being adopted yet again into a more prominent family—it seemed Atsu is fully prepared for it. She's hardened up considerably and my take on her is that she is now putting her full attention on her "role in life" to serve her country through marriage to the Shogun. Things will happen along the way, but she seems burned too many times now to get into an emotional trap of desiring "family" stability (a father, etc.) again. Those days are fleeting and easily changed—just as she now is moving on to yet another "father," another "family." I guess she's quickly learning that "form," not "substance" is the key toward achieving any substance in her life.

One of the most profound scenes was the dialogue she had about the stones in "go" and how she loves each one. "A samurai can do what he wants in life, but a woman has only one path." She loved and envied the "freedom" the game stones had, a modicum of freedom that a woman, a human being, could not have in her era and circumstance (and even today in many places). Very sad. It is not surprising that the women in the ooku plotted and lobbied so much. (Ahh, financial freedom, the great equalizer. emoticon) I admire the resiliency and determination to eke out some happiness by so many women in that confining circumstance.

Then there was Naogoro. I surely do like that actor. Was it Yo****sune where one of the wives had long loved her mentor and they would occasionally meet, though not romantically? Can't remember which Taiga it was. I wonder if Naogoro and Atsu will be like that. He will always love her alone, it seems. One of these days, will she realize that what she feels for him is love, as well?

On to next week...
yes i was crying as well..such a moving drama. i can't wait for next week's eps.

Hmm, yesterday I downloaded Episode 12 and re-watched it just to see if UTB's been cutting scenes out like they did for the last few taigas. I think that besides the opening credits and the travelogue, it seems they've left everything intact! I'm glad they're not cutting scenes from the taiga episodes anymore - let's hope it stays this way throughout the run of the show.

That's really good to know that they're not cutting stuff out! It certainly didn't seem like they were.

Yeah, UTB seems to be turning a new leaf. They haven't been cutting stuff out of the Sunday 9 PM drama either (which explains why they've been starting at 8:55 instead of at 9:05 when they usually start). Its a relief, for a while there in some of those dramas, they were cutting out a lot of stuff (in the taigas as well!).

Also it seems the trasnmission is brighter this time than in past dramas. I can even see objects indoors. There must be some new management and tech staff at the station.

Better late than never... this event took place last month.

Actress Aoi Miyazaki calls for understanding of childhood cancer

Image

Actress Aoi Miyazaki, 22, on Saturday took part in a Gold Ribbon Walking event in Roppongi to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer. The event was sponsored by insurance company Aflac and others.

Miyazaki handed out chains of paper cranes, which she and about 3,000 visitors made, to children who currently take medication for cancer. Miyazaki, who appears in Aflac TV ads, said, Smiling people give me energy. I try to smile as often as I can, and I wish people would smile at me, too.

In a panel discussion, Kyoko Negishi, whose 14-year-old daughter is being treated for cancer, called for more understanding, saying, I wish more people would have proper knowledge about childhood cancer and pharmaceutical companies would develop medicines not only for adults but also for children.

According to Aflac, cancer is the biggest cause of children’s deaths. About 17,000 children are currently suffering from cancer in Japan, of whom about 550 die every year. Experts say Japan suffers a shortage of doctors specializing in childhood cancers and treatment. -- Japantoday

Its great that Aoi Miyazaki is participating in awareness events like these. It really does a lot not only for her image in the community, but also to give hope to families that are coping with cancer in a loved one, especially a child. Hopefully more in Japan's entertainment industry will take her example and set up awareness drives and events like this one.

Episode 13 airs tonight! I'm looking forward to it a lot - this series is very enthralling.

#13 - The Mother In Edo

Image
ImageImage

Very enthralling episode. We've reached late October of 1853, and it looks like Atsu has finally arrived in Edo awaiting her marriage. There seems to be quite a few new characters introduced, namely the women of the Ooku in the Shimazu mansion in Edo. Lady Hisa, who is Nariakira's wife residing in Edo, and her senior attendants.

Lady Hisa is a very, very odd character. I think there's something we don't know about her. First she sends Atsu those kind gifts (the beautiful kimono fabric, and the candies) and then makes Atsu wait for three days before "meeting" her behind a screen, insulting her, all during which she has a veil covering her mouth. I don't know the significance of that cloth around her nose and mouth - maybe she was suffering with some kind of sickness or disease? Ikushima mentioned to Atsu that she may have caught a cold since it was raining, so maybe that was the reason? But I feel bad for Atsu.. she was so looking forward to meeting her "mother", only to face her.

It seems that Nariakira hasn't bothered to tell anybody about his plans for the marriage. The Konoe Family in Kyoto (where Atsu stopped off first) didn't know much about it, and now Hisa feigned ignorance too. I wonder exactly what's going on here. But one thing is for sure, the whole experience has brought Ikushima and Atsu together. Ikushima finally opened up to Atsu about Princess Iku (Nariakira's late sister) towards the end of the episode, so it hopefully conveys their new relationship together. It seems Ikushima will be Atsu's only ally here in this Edo Satsuma mansion, since none of the attendants nor Hisa have taken much of a liking to Atsu.

Back to Satsuma... poor Naogoro. It seems everybody is entrusting him with Satsuma. Atsu asked him to "take care of Satsuma" in last week's episode, and now his teacher is asking him to do the same before he leaves for the Ryukyus (Okinawa). I'm sure he will have his chance to go to Edo, or maybe he will change his mind and realize his fate is in Satsuma. We'll see.

I'm glad they aired the previews for Episode 14 at the end of the episode. They look good! This series is really getting good, I think we'll be getting into the height of the action.

Spotlight on Matsuzaka Keiko (Ikushima)
Image

• A couple of YouTube videos of Matsuzaka Keiko performing Ai no Suichuuka, which was originally released in 1979 (Showa 54). The first clip is from 1980... not sure what year the second performance was.
