Re: J-Drama Video Club: Now Watching - Boss - Final Episode (Ep. 11)

re Drama suggestions.

I have remembered one of the most scary Japanese dramas I ever watched. It's called 'There's someone beside you' in English. It is really a fascinating story and you can't really believe what happenes because it is a mystery and horror and weird. Just have to suspend your mindset and go for the drama with the great actors.
I will try and spell out the title in Japanese...

'Anata no tonari ni dare ga iru' It's a 2007 drama. Fuji TV I think.

Has my favourite Kasuki Kitamura playing a fierce role. He is so handsome but he changes completely in this role. Very brave.
I think you would enjoy this one.

Re: J-Drama Video Club: Now Watching - Boss - Final Episode (Ep. 11)

Mara, welcome back! Yep, Boss was airing here on Fuji TV, too. I think the series finished airing a couple of months ago without any e-subs, and Fuji has since moved on to airing another drama.

Thanks for the drama suggestion, Peg-san! I've really enjoyed Kitamura Kazuki's performance as Uesugi Kagekatsu in this year's Tenchijin taiga. He's a great actor and seems to be able to do an excellent job with any type of role -- whether comedy or drama. Looks like he's also worked on mystery dramas, too! What a talented actor. His performances are very real and believable.

Thanks, Hiroshi66.
I know Kitamura Kazuki from Hitonatsu no Papa E - that's from the good old days when there was a drama on the local NYC government station once a week.....

Yep, Kitamura Kazuki has appeared in many dramas and movies over the years. His first drama was in 1998, and he's been working on two or three dramas a year ever since. It looks like Tenchijin wasn't his very first taiga -- he appeared in the 2001 Hojo Tokimune taiga, too.

Ah..I remember that well. He had some very dramatic scenes. I loved that taiga and would enjoy watching it again. I did not knwo how to d/l anything at that time and I could not afford the high price of the complete DVD. Very long drama.

Yes, I wish the DVDs for the taiga drama were less expensive, too. Since each series is anywhere from 45-50 episodes, the DVD sets can cost hundreds of dollars and often come without any e-subs. It would be great to re-watch some of these taiga dramas again. I'd love to see Hideyoshi or Hojo Tokimune.

Boss - Final Episode (Ep. 11)

Finally watched the concluding episode of BOSS. All I can say is WOW. It yanked me every which way. At first I couldn't believe that Nodate was the bad guy. Then it was obvious he was. Then he wasn't!

Overall, this series was a little difficult for me to watch. It wasn't an especially inadequate, or poorly done drama. I think what happened to me was that there were too many other really good dramas happening at the same time and BOSS just sort of got pushed to the end of the line. Some of the middle 'cases' (episodes) weren't all that exciting and I found myself feeling it was more of an obligation—a chore—to make myself watch each episode.

Well, the final episode more than made up for that! IMO, the conclusion was simply excellent—the best of all the episodes. The faux ending (killing Nodate) was a big surprise and just when I had come to terms emotionally with the idea that he was, indeed, the bad guy, Yada plants the slush-fund evidence on his body to absolve himself of complicity. The next ending was an even bigger surprise. But a relief, too, as I really didn't want to accept that Nodate was the criminal mastermind.

Comedic highlights that tickled me.... class ul The Superintendent happily skipping down the lane like a little kid after the 'play' was over and Yada was nailed. Superintendent hadn't had that much fun since he was a kid, loved taking part in the 'play.'

Loved the gay cop getting 'stabbed' and having Hanagate read his last wish from the paper in his pocket... then realizing he wasn't stabbed at all! The moisture on his shirt wasn't blood—it was his own sweat! Laughed at how Eriko kicked him with her back to him, getting him to get up off the floor.

Later, when all the characters are being 'wrapped up' (story lines tied up), Gay Cop and Bald Cop are searching for a body or something in a river when GC swoons over a photo of Eriko. She's the most attractive, competent 'man' he's ever known and is considering changing his orientation. LOL!

Our super-quiet, non-social forensic girl detective came out of her shell. Got a kick out of how animated she was when she visited the Hot Babe forensic lab woman who comments that she is becoming like Eriko. Forensic Girl takes it as a compliment; Hot Babe tells her it wasn't one. FG then happily says "I can be a butterfly, too!" as she leaves the lab. It struck me that Forensic Girl is the character who made the biggest change. Though, the Korean-Japanese detective seemed to have come out of his depressed, discouraged state, too.

Thought it was clever, too, when Eriko gives her BF's younger brother the business card for the woman attorney who is beautiful, 'well-endowed', and an ace lawyer. An inside joke to the Japanese audience because our Eriko actress plays this female attorney in the then upcoming series. Thanks to the fansubbers who added this editorial note so we could enjoy it, as well.

Then there was Nodate's dating party! What a big turnout! LOL! When one of the few attendees (all guys) asks where are the elevator girls (young, single women), one of the guys dons a wig or something, jokingly pretending to be girl.
Quite good drama series—excellent concluding episode. Looking forward to our upcoming movie!

Re: Boss - Final Episode (Ep. 11)

Nchristi, those were some of my favorite comedic moments, too! At first I thought they were trying to make the Superintendent into a mysterious character that might be involved in the slush-fund controversy, but I thought it was really funny how he started happily skipping towards Eriko and Nodate after it was revealed that he was in on the entire 'play' and was one of the participants. How excited he was to 'come back from the dead' and witness Yada's arrest once and for all!

Yep, Forensic Girl sure has changed a lot, hasn't she? I remember in the beginning of the drama, she wouldn't even talk to Eriko and was usually in her own world. But now, she's actually started looking up to Eriko and is starting to become more and more like her. Now that Eriko's back in New York, maybe Forensic Girl is starting to take her place in Eriko's absence!

I agree, this was a wonderful episode and a great way to conclude the drama! I also thought some of the episodes towards the middle of the series were a bit dull. This concluding episode made watching the entire series worthwhile, though. What an exciting case! I, too, am revealed that Takenouchi (Nodate) wasn't the culprit. It wouldn't feel right having Takashi from With Love becoming a criminal in BOSS, LOL! But I liked this drama and especially enjoyed the ending. Great acting, too.

Looking forward to our next movie, Love Letter! emoticon

Re: Love Letter (Movie)

Watched the movie this afternoon. It was well done but I felt it became a little draggy towards the end of the first half on into the second half. Then it picked up again, holding my interest. It wore me out for some reason, though. I have the feeling there's some depth to this one, but I have an aversion to thinking about it. Right now, anyway.

Mostly, I was taken by the Otaru area. One of my favorite K-dramas featured a lot of scenes from the Otaru area during winter, plus I was raised in a very cold, snowy climate. All of this made me homesick for times past. I especially was moved by watching the young girl running and sliding down the frozen road in her shoes, even twirling round doing '360s' while doing so.

Ah, but the most impressive was the opening credits scene. That was a major effort by the Hiroko actress (or stuntwoman) walking that long distance in the deep, powdery snow all the way to the road and then some. Very difficult even if snowshoes are worn—which was not the case in this scene.

Okay, that's it. If I get a sudden epiphany about the plot and/or relationships, I'll be back. emoticon
