Re: J-Drama: 天地人 (Tenchijin)
The first episode of this drama is already up on d-addicts. I could not resist so set my PC to d/l through last night. this morning I opened it and played about five minues. It looked so splendid. Great scenery and settings. Costumes looked great on the cast. Kitamura looks marvellous. Love that actor. I did not watch any more and it does not have Eng. subs. I guess someone will do those later. All the cast not yet in view of course.
If this appears on our channels with subs I am definitely going to record it.

Re: J-Drama: 天地人 (Tenchijin)
Tenchijin to End in November
January 09, 2009
In a very rare move, it seems that this year's taiga drama series on NHK is to end a month early. NHK's annual historical drama has aired on Sunday nights for 50 episodes the last couple of years, but Tenchijin will run for only 47. Tenchijin, with an all-star cast led by Tsumabuki Satoshi (28) as medieval retainer Naoe Kanetsugu (1560-1620), got off to a good start last weekend with an audience rating of 24.7% in the Kanto region. But yesterday NHK announced that another major drama series will air in the Sunday night time slot from November 29 to December 27.
The cast and large scale of Saka no Ue no Kumo was first announced back in November 2007 when filming began, and the series is being shot on 18 locations around Japan as well as Russia, China, France and the U.K. Starring Abe Hiroshi (who's also in Tenchijin) as the famous general Akiyama Yoshifuru (1859-1930), Motoki Masahiro, Kagawa Teruyuki and Kanno Miho, it is based on the historical novel by Shiba Ryotaro (1923-1996).
This year's five episodes will actually complete the first part of the series. The second series of four episodes will air in the autumn of 2010, while the third and final part will be shown a year after that. An NHK spokesman said that the plan to show the drama in the usual taiga time slot was to ensure that it got the maximum audience exposure and was made well before Tenchijin started. --Japan Entertainment News

Re: J-Drama: 天地人 (Tenchijin)
Peg, I think there's two episodes left to air of Atsuhime, so it'll depend on whether or not UTB decides to divide the final episode of Atsuhime (Episode 50) into two parts. If they do that, the second half of Episode 50 will air on Saturday, January 31st. If UTB decides to air the first episode of Tenchijin on the Saturday after that, then it'll start on Saturday, February 7th. UTB hasn't started airing any commercials yet, though, so I'm thinking we'll get the confirmed starting date when they begin to air commercials for Tenchijin.
I'm pretty excited too! I've been looking through the cast and character lists, and the story seems pretty interesting!

The narrators for a lot of Japanese programs are women and frequently seem to have similar voices. I've always found the women narrators to be very effective and pleasing to hear. This time it's Miyamoto Nobuko, born in 1945. I'll bet she's got a great voice by now!
The cast certainly does contain a lot of our regulars. And lots of young model/singer types.
I think Atsuhime sped by faster than any taiga I've watched so far. Some have been interesting for the most part, others about as exciting as watching paint dry. Atsuhime was a treat in every way. Costuming, music, sets... everything was beautiful. Great script writing and acting, too. It will be difficult to follow an outstanding taiga like Atsuhime.Same here about Atsuhime.
Hope Tenchijin will do well too. Atsuhime had shaken the whole country in
2008 so I think (as most of my Japanese friends are saying) people are
closely observing how Tenchijin will progress & they are hoping that it will
be as or more engrossing than Atsuhime. So far, it's doing well.
"Tenchijin" opener beats "Atsuhime"
Tue, January 6, 2009 (1:39am EST)
Last year's popular "Atsuhime" series may have boosted expectations for NHK's new taiga drama, "Tenchijin." The first episode, which aired on Sunday, averaged 24.7% in the Kanto area, giving it the best start for a taiga drama in the past five years. By comparison, "Atsuhime" started at only 20.3% last January, but it eventually peaked at 29.2% and averaged 24.5% for the entire year.
"Tenchijin" stars Satoshi Tsumabuki as the military leader Naoe Kanetsugu. His supporting cast includes Kazuki Kitamura, Takako Tokiwa, Hiroshi Abe, Masami Nagasawa, and Saki Aibu.

Well, I won't get my hopes up. What an impossible task to follow something like Atsuhimi. Such a fine tiaga comes around maybe once in ten years—if that often.
Not to be down on Tenchijin, though. I've endured some real dogs and still kept sitting there watching and discussing here on the board. I will give this new one some time, too, before I have much of an opinion on it. Even in the worst of them, there is always a character or some aspect that is appealing and interesting, if not educational.
Nchristi, I know what you mean -- while watching the initial previews for Tenchijin last night, I was already starting to miss Atsuhime! What I enjoyed most about Atsuhime was that I was very interested by the characters and the storyline as early as the first episode. We also had a chance not only to see the main characters develop, but also other characters on the sidelines (Saigo, Okubo, the Shoguns, etc.)
At least Abe Hiroshi is in Tenchijin -- I'm looking forward to seeing him again. We'll see how this drama turns out, but I do think I'll keep re-watching Atsuhime so I don't miss it too much!
