Re: J-Drama: 天地人 (Tenchijin)
Episode 36 - The Greatest Secret Pact
Another great episode. Things are really getting heated up, aren't they? Tonight we had more trouble between Ieyasu and the Mitsunari/Kanetsugu camp. Ieyasu took advantage of the discontent amongst Hideyoshi's vassals as well as the difficult financial situation at the time by telling them that Mitsunari was to blame for all of the country's troubles, even though Mitsunari had often taken the blame for all of Hideyoshi's decisions. Fukushima Masanori and some of Hideyoshi's other former vassals took up arms one night and tried to kill Mitsunari. Mitsunari, in turn, escaped to the Tokugawa mansion, knowing that it would be one place where Fukushima and the other vassals wouldn't dare attack.
When Kanetsugu heard the news, he was afraid that Ieyasu would try to murder Mitsunari now that he was taking refuge in his mansion. He approached Lady Yodo and asked her to save Mitsunari. Yodo sent Ieyasu a secret letter, thanking him for 'saving' Mitsunari by allowing him to take refuge in his mansion. Slick move by both Yodo and Kanetsugu. Now that Ieyasu had received a letter of appreciation and thanks for saving Mitsunari's life from none other than Hideyoshi's widow, he wouldn't be able to execute Mitsunari on the spot. Then again, Ieyasu took other measures.
First, Ieyasu pressured Mitsunari to exile himself back to his home castle. Then, he entered Hideyoshi's former Fushimi Castle, naming himself as Young Lord Hideyori's sole guardian. His final move was to order Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu to return back to Aizu along with the entire Uesugi army. After saying goodbye to Princess Kiku and Osen who were to remain in Kyoto, Kanetsugu, Saneyori, and Kagekatsu returned to Aizu. All of their allies (including Hideyoshi's nephew Hidetoshi and Lord Mori Terumoto) were worried about what would happen with Ieyasu after the Uesugi left, but they had no choice but to quietly watch the Uesugi leave Kyoto and return to Aizu.
Interesting scenes with Mitsunari back in his home castle. It looked like he had cut his hair extra short after he was exiled back to his home province, and was now living with Hatsune and his vassal, Sakon. When Kanetsugu first visited Mitsunari, he was feeling powerless and afraid of Ieyasu's next moves. However, Kanetsugu arranged a secret plan with him. They both had a feeling that Ieyasu's reasons for 'exiling' Mitsunari and the Uesugi clan was so that he could prepare for war and take over the country. However, Kanetsugu and Mitsunari's strategy was equally threatening. While Ieyasu was approaching Aizu Province to strike at the Uesugi, Mitsunari and his allies would strike at the Tokugawa army from behind. Thus, thanks to this secret pact, Mitsunari and the Uesugi were able to ally together against Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Sad ending scene with Kanetsugu and Mitsunari. Hatsune asks them both what they are planning to do after the country becomes peaceful. Kanetsugu mentions that he will build roads and schools so that children of any social background will learn to read and write. As for Mitsunari, he wants to travel and see what exists across the sea. Nonetheless, it was really sad listening to the narrator's ominous final comments at the end of the scene, where she mentioned that this parting would be an 'eternal farewell' between Mitsunari and Kanetsugu.
Ieyasu became more and more threatening by the end of the episode. Nene, who had became a Buddhist nun after Hideyoshi's death and took the name Koudai-in, gave the Western Wing of Osaka Castle to Ieyasu, who promptly moved in and built a new tower for himself. Ieyasu also began to persecute Maeda Toshiie's son Toshinaga, accusing him of conspiring against the Tokugawa clan and ordering him to send his mother Matsu as a hostage. All this occurred just months after the deaths of both Hideyoshi and Maeda Toshiie.
Very great acting on the part of the actor who plays Tokugawa Ieyasu. His intimidating tactics and tone of voice are very well done by this actor. Great performance. I also enjoyed the scene where Kanetsugu and Osen were looking at the moon together. I appreciated Osen's advice to Kanetsugu: Wisdom will come to you when you relax and clear your mind. Really nice scene with a beautiful shot of the full moon.
We're now in mid-1599, and the Uesugi clan is back in Aizu Province. Episode 37 airs next Saturday, October 24th!

I listen to the audio and watch the visual display at the same time. I loved the theme song. There is a part where the snowflake falls and one of them shows yoroku's mom with her kids and she is picking up one of her sons.......this reminds me of Michael Jackson running with his kids(picking up blanket also)...very touching!

Re: J-Drama: 天地人 (Tenchijin)
I loved these pictures, too bad I don't read Japanese. I especially got a kick out of the pics of all the wigs. I think I started watching this show because the men's hair looked so great.
class reveal class spoiler How interesting it was to see Kanetsugu and Osen with greying hair. The lives of all these characters are starting to wind down.
Expect to see major characters start dying off like in the Korean historicals as they get toward the end of the show. (eg Ep 39, 41, 42)

Re: J-Drama: 天地人 (Tenchijin)
Episode 37 - A Challenge to Ieyasu
Very intense episode last night. After Ieyasu 'exiled' the Uesugi back to Aizu Province, he was waiting for the first chance he could get to attack them and finally take over the country. At the same time, a memorial service for Lord Kenshin was being held in Aizu Province. Kenshin's sister and Kagekatsu's mother Lady Sento-in made her way from Echigo for the service, but had bad news to deliver to her son. Hori Hideharu, who took over Echigo Province after the Uesugi moved to Aizu, is suspecting the Uesugi clan of taking part in treacherous activities against Young Lord Hideyori and Ieyasu. Kanetsugu originally downplayed the threat, but things got more dangerous after Hideharu made an official complaint against the Uesugi clan to Ieyasu. Ieyasu, suspecting the Uesugi of treason, ordered Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu to pay a visit to Kyoto and write an oath of loyalty to Ieyasu himself.
That's where the "Naoe Letter" came in. Kanetsugu wrote an official letter to Ieyasu, claiming that the Uesugi are innocent of all claims, and that he is very disappointed in Ieyasu for believing "liars" like Hori Hideharu without first verifying the truth for himself. The icing on the cake was where Kanetsugu told Ieyasu that he used to think of him as an honest and fair man, but he cannot believe how "unreasonable" he really is. Ouch! Ieyasu was angry. I couldn't help chuckling a bit when Ieyasu threw his temper tantrum, throwing the letter on the floor and stepping all over it. LOL! I don't think I had ever seen his character so infuriated before!
I found it interesting how Kanetsugu 'forwarded' this letter to a whole bunch of other people. It must have taken him hours or even days to write that letter over and over again and send to all those individuals. He sent it to:
Mori Terumoto, Hidetoshi, Fukushima Masanori, Date Masamune, Koudai-in (Nene), Yodo and Young Lord Hideyori, Lady Sento-in, Mitsunari and Hatsune, Osen, and Ieyasu
10 different letters! Ouch. His hand must have been tired afterwards!
That's when all the trouble started. As soon as Ieyasu left for Aizu to punish Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu, Mitsunari and Mori Terumoto began to raise an army against Ieyasu. They claimed to be protecting Young Lord Hideyori, and Mitsunari entered Osaka Castle. Once there, they took the wives and children of all the samurai lords hostage, ordering them to write letters to their husbands and ask them to leave Ieyasu's command and return to Osaka, where they can join Mitsunari's army and punish Ieyasu. Princess Kiku and Osen were among the wives taken hostage in the castle. This army opposing Ieyasu was led by Mori Terumoto and Ukita Hideie (another one of the Chief Ministers). Mitsunari also had a leading role.
Ieyasu has thus been sandwiched between the Uesugi and Mitsunari. Rather than continue north to punish the Uesugi, he's decided to forget about them for now and retreat west to meet Mitsunari and Mori Terumoto's army. Ieyasu's army of 100,000 includes the huge force of Fukushima Masanori, who was once one of Hideyoshi's most loyal retainers.
Speaking of Fukushima Masanori, he's started supporting Ieyasu rather than Mitsunari. Even though Ieyasu's true motive is controlling the country, he told a quick lie to Masanori, telling him that even though Mitsunari is claiming to be on Young Lord Hideyori's side by raising an army, Mitsunari has really entered Osaka Castle and taken Hideyori hostage. Ieyasu puts on a theatrical performance and begs Masanori to convince the other samurai to stay in the Tokugawa army, defeat Mitsunari's forces, and uphold Hideyoshi's legacy. Ieyasu knows how loyal Masanori was to Hideyoshi, so he's trying to make it look like the Tokugawa are fighting for the best interests of Hideyori, not the Uesugi and Mitsunari.
I guess we'll see what happens. The Date (under Masamune) and the Mogami clans to the north of Aizu have taken Ieyasu's side and invaded Aizu, so the Uesugi themselves are in a difficult position between hostile enemies (the Date to the north and the Tokugawa to the south). Now, the Uesugi have to fight their northern enemies. There also seemed to be a little rift between Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu. Kanetsugu and the other vassals wanted the Uesugi to attack the retreating Tokugawa army, who had turned around and were returning to Kyoto to fight Mitsunari's forces. Kagekatsu, however, declared that this was not what the late Kenshin would do, and wanted to stay put. Before a decision could be made, however, the news of the Mogami clan's invasion of Aizu was revealed, so the Uesugi had no choice but to defend their territories against the northern enemies. Meanwhile, Ieyasu is retreating to face Mitsunari and Mori Terumoto's army.
Interesting turn of events. We're now in mid-1600. Episode 38 airs next Saturday, October 31st!
