Re: J-Drama: どんど晴れ (Dondo Hare)
Missed yesterday's episode. Messed up trying to juggle the digital sub-channels at night for recording this on my VCR and got something else, much to my chagrin when I sat down to enjoy watching Dondo Hare.
I'm just loving this one. I don't know what happened yesterday, but it seems to be moving right along. What a blockbuster ending today. Grams looks terribly ill (or on her deathbed) and the narrator says: Natsumi had no idea this would bring about her breakup with Masaki.
Well, I figured from the get-go that something would happen to Masaki. It always seemed that Natsumi was going to end up by herself as the Head Proprietress (whew, what a mouthful). I thought maybe she would be a widow, but from the sound of it, it seems that Masaki might just abandon ship.
I get the feeling we're going to have a lot of political type vying going on between various family members. And, of course, Masaki's father will probably reappear one of these days. He is, after all, the eldest son of the family and the rightful heir to run the joint. How interesting that one day he simply didn't come home! Well, that's the way to do it, I suppose, if you want to disappear from all your responsibilities in life.
Who was the nasty, grumpy guy who blasted the mousy mother of the two kids, dismissing her overwhelmed response that handling two kids makes running the inn difficult? Don't you just love hearing some guy—who has probably never even babysat kids for a couple hours—telling a mother that she can mother and run an inn if she'd only discipline the children? Was that the uncle, or Masaki's brother?
About the inn... What a supreme level of care and attention they give their patrons. What a pleasant break from the hustle and bustle of the workaday world. I was very impressed with the minute level of detail they observe. When the HP and the P (DIL) were bidding farewell to their patrons, the DIL puts her hand up to protect the patron's head from hitting the car door frame as they're getting in. The only other time I've seen that is when the cops are having a handcuffed person get in the patrol car. And then it's only to keep the department from being sued for negligence!
On to next week...

Re: J-Drama: どんど晴れ (Dondo Hare)
#2 & 3
Nchristi, I feel the same way -- I've missed these morning dramas! It's been so long since we last saw a morning drama, and I had forgotten how nice and calming these dramas were. It really gives a nice glimpse into Japanese culture and daily life in Japan. Dondo Hare seems to follow in this tradition. Really enjoying it so far.
Ep. 2 and 3 seemed to offer a glimpse into the members of the Kagami family. The 77-year old head proprietress (HP) has two sons. One is Masaki's father, who left his family when Masaki was still young. The family has no idea of his whereabouts. His wife (Masaki's mother) was the proprietress of the inn, but she passed away when Masaki was still a little boy. Masaki is their only son. Then we have the younger son of the HP, who is the uncle and who is married into the DIL proprietress, Tamaki (the lady who helped the customer into the cab.) She has two sons herself. The eldest son is married with 2 young boys, while the younger son is not married yet. What a big family!
The man who accused his wife of not "disciplining" the 2 young boys is the son of the uncle and the DIL proprietress, so I guess that would make him Masaki's cousin. What a mean guy. Rather than helping his wife look after their young children, he's just embarrassing her in front of the entire family. Why doesn't he get up and help her with the kids? It's much more helpful than his nasty commentary.
I agree, we may have some political succession disputes going on. Technically, Masaki is the "heir" of the inn, since his father is the eldest son of the HP. But he's already mentioned that he has no intention of taking over the inn, so maybe Masaki's uncle and aunt (the current proprietress and her husband) will be next in line? I guess it will all depend on the head proprietress' condition. I hope that she will be okay.
It would be interesting if Masaki leaves Natsumi and runs away somewhere -- especially since we found out that his father did the same thing to his mother. I agree, I think Dad is still around somewhere. If anything happens to HP, I suspect he may come back to stake his claim. But everything depends on HP's health at this point... I certainly hope she's not on her deathbed and that she will recover soon.
Great drama! Looking forward to seeing more scenes of the inn, as well. #4 airs on Monday!

Re: J-Drama: どんど晴れ (Dondo Hare)
Dondo Hare #4 (Mon 4/6)
Well, things are really starting to heat up. It was revealed by Head Proprietress to Masaki that her son and his family, who are the "heirs" to the inn, want to destroy Kagamiya Inn's traditional architecture and create an exclusive style resort. Head Proprietress doesn't want that, so now she wants Masaki to return home to Morioka for good and take over the inn.
We were introduced to a new character today -- the elderly man who worked as an expert iron caster and who was revealed to have a major crush on our Head Proprietress. Looks like he is played by the veteran actor, Nagato Hiroyuki. We recently saw him in our previous taiga, Atsuhime, as Nariakira's father Shimazu Narioki (in the earlier episodes.) He was also in our Video Club movie, Akitsu Hot Springs (filmed in 1962) as the male lead character. He's a great actor -- been doing it for many years!
It was ironic that both HP (head proprietress) and the iron caster thought they saw Natsumi as a zashiki warashi -- a legendary goblin that has been said to appear in rural Japanese homes and bring good fortune to wherever it may appear. Natsumi herself seems to love going into that storeroom and looking over memories of Masaki's childhood. I think it really bothered her that Masaki had such a lonely childhood.
Masaki must be feeling very pressured, especially since he's effectively torn between his life with Natsumi in the big city, and his grandmother back home, who asked him to "rescue" the inn from the other side of the family who want to raze it down and develop a resort. But how will this affect his relationship with Natsumi? HP seems to get along with Natsumi (as does the rest of the family), but how would she feel about moving to Morioka? From the past episodes, it seems like she has made up her mind about working in her father's bakery even after her marriage. But we'll see what happens.
#5 airs tomorrow!

Re: J-Drama: どんど晴れ (Dondo Hare)
Nchristi, that's pretty interesting that the actor playing Masaki also played in a Korean drama set in Japan! This is my first time seeing him in a J-drama, but he's a pretty good actor. Him and the female lead playing Natsumi are both doing a great job so far. And then we have a really excellent supporting cast, especially Heiji and Head Proprietress Katsuno.
Yeah, I think in order for Natsumi to become Proprietress, she would have to be married to Masaki first. From what we've learned about Masaki's mother, she married into the Kagami family and became the inn's Proprietress while her husband ran the financial side of it. So maybe Natsumi would only be allowed to succeed if she was married into the family. Then again, Katsuno has taken a great liking to Natsumi, so it could go either way. But I agree, Masaki was definitely acting really suspicious. I hope he doesn't end up caving in from all the pressure. He has a job in the city too, so he might be getting a lot of stress from there, as well.
I love this drama! Excellent stuff.
