Re: J-Drama: 魔王 (Devil)

class blockquote It looks like Devil will begin airing on Sunday, October 11th. Episode 1 will be divided into two parts, so it will be aired over the course of two weeks (10/11 & 10/18). I'm looking forward to watching!I don't see why they just don't air the first episode fully. It's only one nite.
They can just organize everything to fit the schedule. That's the only thing that kind of bothers me. I like watching things in their entirety.

Glico, I feel the same way. I know that UTB has to divide the episode in half to fit each segment of the episode into the 9p - 10p time slot, but they could always make an exception for one night and adjust their schedule so that they can air the first episode in its entirety. Then again, I'm thankful that UTB divides the long episodes into multiple parts rather than cutting or editing scenes out.

Maybe you can try recording each segment of the first episode and then watching both parts in one sitting.

posticon What a devil!

I saw this one a few months ago in a fan-subbed version. It's good - Ikuta Toma is great, and although I know Ohno won best actor, I didn't think he was all that good. I think the award he won for acting was one of those that's awarded by popular vote, so it's more of a popularity thing. Maybe I just don't like Ohno. I've always thought he looks kind of like one of those cartoon rat characters, pointy little teeth and all!

Mostly I'm going to rewatch it to see if UTBs subs are as good as the fan-subs I saw.

Re: J-Drama: 魔王 (Devil)

This one will take some getting used to for me so I will give it some time. My first reaction was that the actor playing the lawyer in the Korean version was stunningly enigmatic and fascinating. He was a very tall, beautiful actor who created an incredibly mysterious aura around his character. The suspense in trying to figure out what and who he is was palpable. This is completely lacking (so far) in the Japanese version. I will have to try to set aside all memories from the original drama and avoid comparisons, viewing this one as a standalone to be judged only on its own merits.

Re: J-Drama: 魔王 (Devil)

Episode 1 (Part 1)

I just finished watching the first half of Episode 1. It ended a little early (9:50p) but UTB probably did that so they can air the second half of the episode next Sunday. I thought the drama got off to an okay start. One thing is for sure, the writers didn't spend any time introducing the characters or gradually setting up the background for the viewers -- they cut to the chase and jumped right into the story! I've noticed that a lot of the 'thriller dramas' we've seen are like that, though. I guess the writers think that it adds mystery to the story.

One of our main characters is Naruse, the lawyer. He's known as an 'Angel Lawyer' because he always wins difficult cases and helps his clients out. He seems to be well-liked by his employees, too. Then we have Serizawa, the detective who was seen getting a confession from a suspect after almost throwing him off the rooftop of a highrise building. Talk about an involuntary confession! So far, we've been introduced to Serizawa's father, a businessman and owner of a company. It doesn't look like Serizawa and his father have a very good relationship, however. There's also Serizawa's older brother, his wife, and his personal assistant/employee. Serizawa seems to be the black sheep of the family. Nobody seems too thrilled that he's a detective.

Who was Serizawa's sister-in-law (his brother's wife) kissing in the kitchen? The lighting was a little dark in that scene, but I thought it looked like the personal assistant who was alongside Serizawa's older brother (the guy with the glasses.)

Then there's Shiori, who seems to have spiritual powers. From the looks of it, she also knows quite a lot about tarot cards and sells them. I think she also works part-time in the library, since we saw her helping Lawyer Naruse find a book on architecture. She's another mysterious character. Apparently she's able to have visions of events and images related to a particular item. She keeps asking Naruse if she's seem him before, but he has no idea about what she's talking about. Though it may be more than a coincidence that they've already met twice -- once in the library, and then in the church.

Serizawa's father's lawyer was found murdered in his office after receiving a tarot card entitled 'Judgment.' Serizawa received this same tarot card from the same sender, but it was revealed that the name used by the sender was fake and that no such person existed. However, it was determined that the 'judgment' tarot card was purchased from Shiori. Serizawa might be worried that he's next! According to Shiori, the judgment card means that the time has come to atone for one's past sins that they have tried to forget. When Serizawa heard that from her, he started to look extremely worried and concerned. Could Serizawa be hiding some kind of a 'past sin' that he doesn't want to face?

Another big question I have is about Naruse -- what's up with him? He will be smiling one second, and then his facial expression suddenly changes to an almost evil smile. We did see that Naruse called the murdered lawyer on his cell phone before his death, so could he have been the murderer? And then there's the question of the tarot cards. Why did the late lawyer and Serizawa receive 'judgment' cards?

Well, I guess we got a 'sneak peek' of the plot and the drama. Serizawa seems to have no idea who Naruse is, but I'm not sure if it's the same with Naruse. When he and Serizawa first met and parted ways, Naruse's content expression turned to an angry one. Who is he and what's he hiding? And then there's the question of who was behind the other lawyer's murder and why he was killed. At the end of the day, though, I'm not too sure about the acting. Though Ohno Satoshi (Naruse) won a Best Actor award for his role, I'm not really getting a very suspenseful vibe from his character so far, either. He tries to act mysterious in the scenes he appears in, but the whole aura of mystery/suspense doesn't seem very strong. I can't seem to get used to his character (or performance) yet. Ah, I'm starting to miss Love Shuffle and all those Panda jokes. LOL!

Nchristi, the original Korean version of this drama sounds like it was very well done! I was just looking at some info about the drama and pictures of the cast on the DramaWiki page. I'd really like to watch the original version. It seems like the actor in the original drama who portrayed the lawyer character, Naruse, did a much better job of adding a sense of mystery and suspense to the character.

Episode 1 (Part 2) airs next Sunday, October 18th.

Re: J-Drama: 魔王 (Devil)

Diane, the elements of fortune telling and spiritual powers in last night's episode reminded me a lot of Trick, one of my very first J-dramas. That drama starred Nakama Yukie (as a magician) and Abe Hiroshi (as a famous physicist) who would go around investigating fortune tellers and exposing them as frauds. It ran for about three seasons, including two full-length movies and a special. I think they aired the first season of Trick on UTB back in 2003. When we saw Shiori 'tracing' the location of her friend's lost earring, it reminded me a lot of what we used to see in Trick.

Re: J-Drama: 魔王 (Devil)

One thing about this drama is that they build the background through mere glimpses of prior events, sometimes nearly indiscernible flashbacks. Like many whodunits, the journey to fitting the pieces together is a convoluted one, with only bits and pieces offered along the way. It will probably seem a little confusing for a while, but definitely holds the interest while intellectually challenging us to solve it.

I understand your heebee-jeebies, Diane. emoticon The term was coined by a cartoonist in the 1920s—a time period in which rhyming phrases were popular (hocus-pocus, mumbo-jumbo, the bee's knees). For an in-depth article on heebee-jeebies, here's a good one at The Phrase Finder.

Re: J-Drama: 魔王 (Devil)

Diane, I know what you mean -- the whole idea of the murdered lawyer getting the mysterious 'judgment' tarot card (along with a knife) right before his death was quite creepy!

Yep, I remember being a little confused about some of the flashbacks we saw during last night's episode. They lasted only a couple of seconds, and we really didn't know who was recalling the events or what went on. But it'll be interesting to see how all these flashbacks eventually fall into the place with the rest of the mystery.

Thanks for the link about the heebie-jeebies, Nchristi! I found it interesting when the article talked about how words coined by the media 'spread' faster than words used in slang, which become part of everyday vocabulary over a period of time. It's really interesting to see how language evolves and changes.
