Re: J-Drama: ちりとてちん (Life's like a Comedy)
Calimike, thank you for the English title! I've edited the post and added it in.
Here's UTB's description of the drama: class blockquote A 180-degree turn from the common “optimistic Asadora heroine who overcomes all obstacles,” this protagonist is a pessimistic young woman who becomes enchanted with rakugo, a Japanese traditional form of comic storytelling, and pursues a career in rakugo in Osaka. The story takes place in Fukui Prefecture’s Obama city and Osaka. This comedy revolves around the lives of extraordinary characters. What a coincidence that the story takes place in Obama City!
Looks like the actress playing the heroine in this morning drama is actress Kanjiya Shihori, who also played Mei in our previous Sunday drama, Love Shuffle.

Re: J-Drama: ちりとてちん (Life's like a Comedy)
Yes, I watched it. It looks as though it will be an interesting one. The setting is in an old town (I'll leave it to Hiroshi to give the area names/details), back in the 1980s. The core family is a married couple with two children: daughter 8, son 6. The two kids are smart and cute—and seem a lot wiser than their parents at this stage! The narrator is the little girl as an adult. The drama will be about her life for the last 25–30 years, it seems.
Her father has quit his job in the city and is returning to his father's home to make amends with him and resume working with him. They're both mad at each other and stiff as concrete. The father refuses to allow his son back to work with him. The little boy describes his father/grandfather's relationship as not going to work out because of Dad's pride and Grampa's stubbornness. The grandmother is happy and positive, floating along ignoring her grouchy, stubborn husband (who makes lacquered chopsticks). Grandmother is happy to have the family there—probably some good company for a change!
The little girl is not liking the idea of leaving her home and moving to this distant, rural town, into a really old Japanese house. But she meets a friendly, sweet little girl of the same age at the beach and it looks like they will hit it off as best friends.
Oh, yes... I almost forgot the bachelor son—the weird uncle who lives with his parents. He looks like an imitation of Gackt the rocker. Not his clothes, but his long hair, eye make-up and lipstick—at least it looked as though he were wearing lipstick in this morning's episode.
That's about it for now. Have to run! See you guys tomorrow!

Re: J-Drama: ちりとてちん (Life's like a Comedy)
Episode 1 (Thurs 11/5)
I just watched my recording of yesterday's first episode. Yep, it seems like quite an interesting story! The young actress who plays Kiyomi (the 8-year old daughter) is doing such a wonderful job! What a believable and well-done performance. I thought she did excellent in portraying how a little girl must feel about moving to a new town and home where the traditions and lifestyle are so different from what she was probably used to. I also got a kick out of when she and her younger brother were analyzing the strained relationship between their father and paternal grandfather while walking on the beach! They're still in elementary school, but they can figure out why dad and grandpa are not able to get along.
Nchristi, I know what you mean about Uncle Kojiro, the father's bachelor younger brother. He sure was an odd one, wasn't he! LOL! I was also reminded of Gackt when we first saw him on camera. And then he used Kiyomi's torn red skirt as a 'rag' and used it to make name tags for her and her brother. Ahh! At least Kiyomi's mother was able to use the skirt cloth that had a kitty on it and make it into a good luck charm for Kiyomi to use.
This drama takes place in 1982 in the city of Obama, Fukui Prefecture. Fukui Prefecture is in the west of Japan, near the Osaka/Kyoto region. So, the characters in this drama are all speaking the Kansai dialect, which is characterized by sounding more melodic than the standard 'Tokyo dialect' we usually hear in dramas or movies.
(Obama City) - From Wikipedia class blockquote Obama means "little beach" in Japanese. In the Ritsuryō period, Obama was the capital of Wakasa Province, one of entrance of continental culture. Many temples related to the Yamato Dynasty are located in Obama, and the city is called "Nara by the sea".
In the Edo period, Obama was the capital of the Obama Domain and was the starting point of the Mackerel Road to Kyoto.
The area was municipalized as a city in March 30, 1951 although the area has been inhabited for centuries. Otojirō Uratani is currently the mayor of Obama.
Fishing used to be the main industry, but now it is mostly supported by tourism.
Wakasa lacquered chopsticks, agate accessories, and other crafts are made in the area...
[...]
As a result of the victory by Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, the Mayor of Obama City announced to the Japanese press that he intends to commission a statue of Barack Obama to be put in front of the city hall "as a token of the great historical moment for the name Obama". In addition, he has declared that November 4 will be an annual holiday in the city.
On January 20, 2009, the day that Barack Obama was sworn into office, the city of Obama celebrated with women dancing the hula at the Hagaji Temple to celebrate the inauguration. What an interesting city!

Episode 2 starts in just a little bit!

Re: J-Drama: ちりとてちん (Life's like a Comedy)
Episode 2 (Fri 11/6)
This is turning out to be a good series! I do miss our characters from Dondo Hare, but hopefully this one will turn out to be another great morning drama. Things are continuing to not work out so well between Kiyomi's father and grandfather. The father wants to work with lacquered chopstick-making with his dad, but grandpa won't let him because he quit once before. I cracked up when Kiyomi's little 6-year old brother commented at the dinner table, "A father and son will eventually come to a mutual understanding." What big words! No wonder the father was surprised, LOL!
At school, we find out that the girl with the hat Kiyomi met at the beach is named is also named Kiyomi Wada. What a coincidence! The Chinese characters used to write the name are different, but in conversation, the two names sound exactly the same. What's worse is that the 'other' Kiyomi is the most popular girl in the class, so whenever someone calls her name (which is very often) our Kiyomi thinks they are talking to her, but they aren't! The class eventually decides to call the 'popular' Kiyomi "Kiyomi A" while they call our Kiyomi "Kiyomi B."
On the bright side, Kiyomi 'B' did make a good friend at school named Junko. Junko's parents own a grilled mackerel restaurant, and her father apparently enjoys breaking up arguments. Junko tells Kiyomi B not to be angry at anyone in particular for her 'bad luck' in moving to Obama City or playing second fiddle to Kiyomi A, and seemed to imply t o her that everything will fall in place eventually. Nice encouragement!
As for Kiyomi B and her grandfather, they seem to be getting along better than the rest of the family. Kiyomi B has fallen in love with her grandpa's rakugo tapes, which are Japanese comic storytelling.
From Wikipedia's Rakugo page: class blockquote Rakugo (literally "fallen words") is a Japanese verbal entertainment. The lone storyteller (Rakugoka) sits on the stage, called the Kōza. Using only a paper fan ("sensu") and a small cloth ("tenugui") as props, and without standing up from the seiza sitting position, the rakugo artist depicts a long and complicated comical story. The story always involves the dialogue of two or more characters, the difference between the characters depicted only through change in pitch, tone, and a slight turn of the head.Interesting drama so far! On to next week.
