Re: The Korean Wave
hiroshi which pic are you referring to?
This guy certainly deserves a big W A V E of recognition:
TOP GUN AWARD ....... TOP GUN AWARD.....
The Air Force held an award ceremony for the top finishers at this year¡¯s Boramae competition Tuesday. The ceremony was hosted by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Lee Han-ho at the 11th division of the fighter wing.
Major Huh Geun-ho from the 155th squadron, 19th fighter wing division, which uses KF-16 fighter jets, won the presidential award as ``Top Gun¡¯¡¯ of the year. The 37-year-old scored 1,800 points out of a possible 2,000, flying 1,000 kilometers per hour at an altitude of 6 kilometers and firing bombs at targets of 1 meter in diameter on the ground. His hit rate recorded 90 percent.
At the competition held from Oct. 18 through Oct. 27, a total of 390 fighter pilots took part and vied in individual and group sectors. Huh¡¯s squadron, which has not only been selected as the best squadron for three times and produced two top guns, including this year, also won the presidential award.
Huh¡¯s passion for flying as a fighter pilot is so deep that he regards studying air weaponry systems as his major hobby, according to the Air Force. He is reportedly a subscriber to English-language magazines specializing in the field, and also spends more than two hours a day surfing Internet Web sites related to the subject.
``It is natural for fighter pilots to exercise power of concentration as we always feel attracted to the bull¡¯s eye,¡¯¡¯ Huh said. ``The honor of `top gun¡¯ is only a by-product in the efforts of keeping the tradition. I attribute this to my family and every member of our squadron.¡¯¡¯

Re: The Korean Wave
The Korean Gov. has appointed newspaper publisher Hong Seok Hyun as ambassador to the U.S. In a 2003 interview, quoted in the referenced article, he said:classblockquoteThese men and women became nationalists, something new in our culture, a pride sparked in June of 2002, the unforgettable month when our team went to the quarterfinals of the World Cup soccer championship. This nationalist pride led further to a sustained movement in favor of dynamic change, with whatever uncertainty it may bring, over the certainty of the status quo. While not quite the same as the anti-Vietnam war movement in your country, there are similarities, if in the mere fact they led a movement that created a new president in Roh Moo-hyun, rather than the expected election of the establishment candidate, Lee Hoi-chang.
The World Cup began the movement, and the tragic accident involving the military vehicle and the death of two of our country’s daughters, gave it additional force. As the December 19 national election approached, tens of thousands of our youth gathered on Seoul’s main street of Gwanghwamun and in the City Hall plaza for peaceful, candlelight protests. They called for an apology by President Bush and a revision of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), the legal foundation of U.S. military presence in Korea. They demanded a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Korea, and ignited among our youth an anti-American sentiment, despite our long friendship, history and mutually beneficial relationship with the United States.
Fifty thousand U.S. soldiers dead so these guys can pick an ambassador who openly disparages the U.S. With friends like this, who needs the U.N.?
