isn't the Jirachi being shown at the Torrance Mitsuwa

Yes, it, along with the other items in my “Torrance Mitsuwa Market Summer Festival” post, are occuring at the Torrance Mitsuwa marketplace this weekend (they've cleared out the upper parking lot for the event, erecting stalls and such there).

Obon Festival

July 24–25 12:00–19:00

I forgot to plug the Obon festival. So, that's three Japanese festivals this weekend, the Obon festival, the L.A. Tofu Festival, and Mitsuwa's summer festival.

The Obon festival is a Buddhist celebration, honoring one's ancestors. Included is Japanese food, tea ceremony (Sunday 1pm/2pm/3pm) and taiko demonstrations, kids stuff, dancing (Bon Odori) from 18:30–20:30, and kids' stuff. Admission is free.

Also, I see that the Taiko Center of Los Angeles lists themselves as performing at both the Tofu Festival and Mitsuwa festival this afternoon.

Oops, sorry.

It's at the Higashi Honganji temple at 505 East Third Street, just a long block from the Tofu Festival (so you can hit both in one day). On this map of Little Tokyo, it's the "4". I think the Tofu Festival is around where it says "Casa Heiwa".

Scarry, scarrrry, movie - Ju On

Ju-On is currently screening at the Nuart in Santa Monica. I expect it will be in L.A. for at least a month. It has been remade as The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jason Bear(?) and will be released in November. They used the same director and shot it in Japan. A much better treatment than Ring got.

Dear Ccwf,

That's okay. The Higashi temple? So its a Higashi festival then? Meh, if I was a Buddhist, I would belong to Nishi, but I guess they're theoretically the same thing. Well, thanks anyways.

Ju-On? What kind of film is that?

Re: Events!

Okay - the Tofu Festival passed, and I missed it again. But apparently there are more Nisei Week Festivals going on. Are there any secular ones?

Obon is a Buddhist festival (don't know if it's just a Japanese Buddhist thing) celebrated at many different temples around this time of year. So, if you anyone is interested, they should look at other temples.
