Oh yeah! I really like the traditional Okinawan music that's playing during the part with the swordplay. It was the first of the two songs that the Okinawan dancers were dancing to. I think I remember them playing the same song at the Gardena Obon Festival earlier this month.

Thanks for posting you videos from this year's Nisei Week Parade. I really enjoyed watching them. I was born and raised in L. A. but have really only gone to the parade once. I live in O. C. now and rarely venture out of the area (due to the terrible traffic even on the weekends).

Here it is. The big dance. lol.

After practicing for one year starting on the left foot, they threw me a curve and started on the right foot... see how I'm stumbling... after a while though I was able to switch my thinking from left to right. Then Ryan comes in and throws completely off... very funny.

By the way, on YouTube I found a recording of the Tanko Bushi song from either the late 1930s or early 1940s. It's the same song that is playing during the video of the Nisei Week dance. I think I remember hearing this song at the Gardena Obon dance, too. It seems really popular!

Your little great-granddaughter is really talented in body movement, especially associated with this type music. I noticed that right away when she was imitating the drummers, and obviously she is very interested in it, too. Can't you just see her in a taiko group in a few years? Talent shows up from the beginning!

Tanko Bushi SongIt is a blast to dance in the Bon Odori. Next year I hope to dance several more dances. Free lessons begin in July at the Higashi Honganji temple and later at the JACC.

For those who are not familiar, the Tanko Bushi is one of the oldest dances during the Bon Odori, over 200 years old I believe. It is called "The Coal Miner's Song" The movements are as follows:

Dig Dig to the right
Dig Dig to the left
Throw over right shoulder
Throw over left shoulder
Look right hand over eyes (step back)
Look left hand over eyes (step back)
Push Push
clap clap pause clap
start all over.

As you may know I've been associated with the movie business out here since 1953 as an extra. (And I also was a computer prog/analyst for 30 years). Did you see the tall guy with a little girl on his shoulders near the beginning of the dance video? He's one of the directors of the show nip/tuck... his wife is one of the biggest casting agents in town... she does all of Spielberg's minor casting.
Anyway I'vebeen friends with the whole family for over 20 years mostly with the Sande's father who has an extra casting agency. I invited them to enjoy this portion of the festival and they had a blast. I'm glad they were able to watch Ryan acting up. You can bet I'll be promoting Ryan with them in a year or so when she's more responsive to commands.
