i stopped watching anime a while ago, but i was really into it during high school and college. i guess i've seen a lot of the mainstream series like cowboy bebop, evangelion, ranma, etc., but i'd have to say my top 5 series are:
1. berserk
2. serial experiments lain
3. cowboy bebop
4. trigun
5. vision of escaflowne
for movies, my top 5 are:
1. jin-roh
2. ninja scroll
3. spirited away
4. ghost in the shell
5. grave of the fireflies

Yes, that's true. I’m not that much into anime, but my younger sister is, so I’ve had some exposure. And I eased into Asian dramas from there.
Ranma was okay, but I rather preferred the manga. The animated series, for some reason, always seemed a little dumbed-down to me. Gotta love Shampoo, though. World’s cutest purple-haired Chinese Amazon!
My favorite anime is probably the original “El Hazard” (not the sequels). I got teased by my family about this: they all say I look exactly like the villain Jinnai. Well, there’s a resemblance, maybe – but still . . .

My interest in asian film was a springboard for an interest in dramas and anime. My fav anime? In no particular order:

I really the artwork in Gasaraki and RahXephon though the stories and characters aren't as strong as they could be.

I have manga volumes 2–3 in Japanese but the Orange County Sanseido store has always been out of volume 1 when I've dropped by.
• 天地無用! (Tenchi), as well as similar series like DUAL! ぱられルンルン物語 and 神秘の世界エルハザ (El Hazard)
• ブルーシード (Blue Seed), サザン アイズ (3×3 Eyes)
Although I did mistranslate カバ as pig over in the TiVo Community Forum recently…
