Re: Favorite Anime?
[Should we start an animé review thread?]
This would be a difficult point to start watching since they are just about to show the finalé. They'll be showing the series again from the beginning starting on Mar 14.
Like most series, the first episodes take a while to build, introduce the characters, do a small amount of character development and so forth. There are points where the show seems to drag as you try to figure out where it's going. Once you reach the middle third, the series finds its direction (the big arc). As the last third starts, you get the “Recollection” episode, which is outstanding (for people whose tastes match mine anyways).
Overall, people who like gradual character development should be pleased. People who come in wanting to see a lot of action just because the show is set within an MMORPG will be disappointed.
And the show makes extensive use of leitmotif, which is pretty rare in TV today.

Re: Favorite Anime?
Oh, and the fact that Cartoon Network ends each episode with Japanese characters saying “previews of the next episode” and then never shows any previews, cutting instead directly to the final credits, is a bit disturbing. Little kids are probably going to grow up thinking those symbols mean “The End” or “Credits” or something.

suigeneris, you liked Jin-roh too? That has to be my favorite anime movie of all time. No matter how many times I watch it, I never get bored. Instead I just find out new things that I hadn't really noticed any of the previous times.
I thought Ninja Scroll was pretty good, but it just didn't seem to me like a movie you'd watch over and over again. Have you seen the sequel, Ninja Resurrection? That is a terrible movie in that it doesn't really follow up Jubei's story and there's a lot of things that don't make sense. For instance, in Scroll, Jubei has both his eyes, but that's not the case in Resurrection. Either his father or master (I forget which) threw a knife into his eye while they were training, but there was no mention of that in Scroll, it just randomly appeared in Resurrection.
I think another great movie is Princess Mononoke. The music is great and so is the storyline. Some of the voice acting is bad, but meh, that happens in almost all anime series or movies that are dubbed in English. I think the only exception to that rule is Cowboy Bebop.
Cowboy Bebop: great voice acting.
oh yeah, jin-roh was awesome, i've seen lots of anime in my life and i'd have to rank it number one even over perennial classics like akira and ghost in the shell and whatever else. there;s just something very deep, noir, and poignant about the film despite the tragedy. but i really liked it as a tragedy, great use of metaphors and symbolism but not in an ad nauseum way.
i only put ninja scroll as number 2 because i have a lot of sentimental attachment to it, i think it was the very first anime i ever watched, movie or tv series or ova. it was like in early high school and its what got me hooked. i've probably seen it more than any other anime, which is weird because you woudlnt' think it would have any replay value (its a very simple plot, nothing deep or new from each viewing), but i just think its simple adherence to good art and violence is really a lost art these days, now with all this CG and esoteric plots. i mean, i've seen some dot hack episodes (tv series) and i got bored of it. its like i've done that and seen that before...when it was first called EVANGELION. seriously, the whole metaphyiscal preachy themes are so played out.
by the way, with ninja resurrection, do you know that that is an entirely different, unrelated movie? but bandai or whoever bought the american distribution rights to it decided to make it look like the sequel to ninja scroll, in order to shamelessly ride off the success of scroll. i think they tried to change the english script to make some connections to "jubei" in the original, but it was shoddy and panned by everyone. totally shameless.
i agree with lots of people here, ther are some animes i simply forgot about or did not list in my condensed top 5 lists. macross ova's were incredible, who can forget inuyasha, love hina is quaint, oh my goddess is pretty fun too, and all miyazki films are awesome.

I really the artwork in Gasaraki and RahXephon though the stories and characters aren't as strong as they could be.

Re: Favorite Anime?
Witch Hunter Robin is supposed to be just heading into the really interesting episodes. The episodes to date have been mostly about Robin settling in amongst her new workmates and just establishing the background.

Re: Favorite Anime?
I like Witch Hunter Robin. When I tuned into CN the other day to watch, I noticed there was no opening sequence.
WHR without "Shell" opening the show doesn't seem right. They probably didn't close it with "Half Pain" either.
I didn't have any major beefs with the voices and the original score was still present.
Only thing I DO dislike about WHR is the ending. I guess they want to keep it open for another season probably.

Re: Favorite Anime?
"Witches still exist in the modern world. A secret organization called STN exists to capture the remaining witches. STN have people called Hunters who locate witches and capture them so they can be taken away by the "Factory". The Japanese branch called STNJ loses a hunter one day, so a young girl by the name of Sena Robin is sent as a replacement. Robin is not your ordinary Hunter, she is a witch as well with the power of fire. One day, the tables turn as Robin becomes the hunted and is forced into hiding. She searches to discover the truth behind the mysterious Factory as well as her own past."

Berserk (the manga is even better imo.. and that's saying A LOT consideirng how amazing the anime is)
Grave of the fireflies - i swear, i did NOT CRY..;)
Spirited away (pretty much anything by Miyazaki-san)
Lupin sansei - not the series, just the movies , which are a mixed bag actually. Some are awesome, some just plain suck.
